In Going Clear Pt. 17 Marty starts hair splitting over unimportant events surrounding the publishing on his blog of Paul Haggis's eloquent resignation letter (resigning from Scientology) to Tommy Davis, as is mentioned in Going Clear, where Haggis details all his reasons for leaving the Church. Marty doesn't talk about this but as I recall, Haggis didn't fully realize that by allowing his letter to be published on Marty's blog that it would go public, and be major news, but he probably considered the possibility.
Again, this is another video segment which is something in GOING CLEAR the cult would never want current members to hear about, read, or think about, Haggis's resignation letter. Marty rambles about this in such a confusing manner that I had to refresh my own memory (through Google) about the letter.
I don't even know what Marty is trying to say, because what he mentions is of so little importance compared to the significance of the actual letter. Also, he doesn't explain what the letter is really, or why it ended up causing a minor earthquake in the media and in celebrity Scientology.
Instead, Marty uses it as a backdrop to call Paul Haggis a prima donna for his weeks of worry, consultation with Marty about this, and his waffling about the best way to exit the cult. Marty talks about this as if it were a non-event, blown all out of proportion, because Paul Haggis thinks he's so important.
In fact, Scientology's most accomplished celebrity, Paul Haggis, wanted to resign from Scientology, and stated his reasons (via the letter) in public. Of course he was worried about it! He had been in the celebrity sphere of Scientology, not the Sea Org or operational part. He wanted to maximize the positive impact, while minimizing the negative impact to friends, family, and his own career.
Paul saw how some of his close cult friends turned on him to the point they didn't want to talk to him or associate with him anymore, so he wanted to understand what could be done by people like Tommy Davis and David Miscavige, who weren't his friends. Who better to ask than Marty, who was familiar with cult operations against people like Nicole Kidman, and who knew Miscavige.
I imagine Haggis did not want celebrity Scientology or other Scientology friends dragged into ethics, so that they would suffer because of his decision to leave. At the same time he was trying to figure out how to make those people understand why he was doing this, and as I recall, he tried to reach out to many of them and was rejected. They virtually organized against him, and said "How could you do this!" without wanting to listen to his reasons. And some of these people he considered to be close friends for years.
Although Paul Haggis was not famous like Tom Cruise, his leaving Scientology was big. This was not an unknown actor like Jason Beghe, or an actor who dabbled and drifted away like Superman Christopher Reeve. Of course, it is true that Haggis had not been public about his Scientology and except for close followers of Scientology news, most of the public did not know he was a Scientologist. That was part of the surprise for much of the public. Still, he was accomplished/distinguished by his work and the awards he received from his peers in the industry.
Wright chose Haggis because his leaving Scientology caught his attention, and he considered him to be a peer, from his writing. As I recall, Wright did not know Haggis was a Scientologist until he read the news about his resigning. He needed a personalized story of at least one person, to lead a reader into Scientology and celebrity Scientology, the latter being a major theme in his book.
Marty waffles a little on not remembering if he went ahead and published Haggis's letter at Haggis's request, but seems to want to take credit that he was he, Marty Rathbun, who finally published the thing. That would kind of elevate Marty to a place in the ASC troika, wouldn't it?
Paul Haggis's resignation not only was a big event in Scientology for itself, it also had a cascade effect, spawning GOING CLEAR the book and movie. There were Hollywood actor wannabees, young, aspiring actors and actresses in the cult who read the news surrounding Paul Haggis, woke up and got out.
And Marty Rathbun helped with this! That's why Paul Haggis said he was eternally grateful. It all came out well. People were helped by his public coming out. Few people were hurt. His career is going fine, and free of Scientology. Maybe when Marty is doing his little smirk of knowingness in these videos, he's appreciating the irony that he not only helped Paul Haggis make a great exit from the cult, he helped with making GOING CLEAR, even if Wright didn't include only Marty's version of events in his book.
