From an international perspective, having lived around the world, I find it funny to hear Americans trumpeting themselves as being the #1 of everything . . . or, as in the case above, getting the dopey (now owned by Rupert "the Weasel" Murdoch) to carry the American case for them.

As to the #1 and best surfing spot in the world, we Ozzies are smart enough to keep the secret to ourselves  What we don't want is the riff-raff crowding out our treasures  We want to keep our treasures uncrowded and un-sullied

These pictures were taken about 600 yards or so from where I lived. It's just south of the beach I spent all my time on, around the corner so to speak. We call this location "The Cemetery" . . . this because these shots were taken from atop the cliffs (100+ feet high) at the Waverly Cemetery.

The trick here, is that when the waves and wind are running in the right direction the lads do what they call "The Tamarama Run" . . . this because they can get out and run the waves from south of Bronte Beach across to Tamarara Beach it's a good run of maybe near a mile

Get a load of this. My old Game :D

A Possible Money Making Venture!?

I attended an meeting last night on a possible money making topic. It has to do with "Green" sources of selling electrical power.

According to the presentation, 15 states are now de regulated and residents can purchase their electrical power from independent companies and not just their giant local Utility Company, such as Southern California Edison. By law, all states must be deregulated by 2014, this includes both residential and commercial users of electricty. Natural gas is also going to be de regulated by 2014.

The state of California will become de regulated for residential electrical users on July 1 of this year and commercial users will follow suit on July 1, 2011.

The company called "Power Bids" who put on the meeting is based in Texas, which has already been deregulated for some time. They are using a modified multi level marketing system. It has more ways to make money than a typicaL multi level marketing company such as Amway. First of all electricity is something everyone has to buy anyway so there is recurring purchasing taking place every month and by going with "Power Bids" a prospect will get his electricity 18% cheaper so it is not a hard sell type of product, rather it is getting something you use already 18% cheaper. That is a an extremely nice feature which takes away the spectre of a hard sales close. Here are the details which I was able to get from attending the meeting:

Electricity comes from a giant power grid and runs through wires into your Electrical Panel attached to your house. The connection to your panel has leakage amounting to 18% for residential users. Commercial users have heavier duty equipment on their meters AnD have only 9% leakage. It is similar to if the gasoline hose at a gas station having leakage, the leaked gasoline would go on the ground but the consumer would pay for it.

What this compnay is selling is a 4" x 4" metal box which is affixed to your electrical meter and what it does is collect all the leakage and recycle it back into the Grid. The user is using 18% less electricity and saves that money on his bill. The environment is helped by stopping the leakage. There are 5 ways one can make money from this activity:

#1. - The recycling box, called a Gig II, sells for $600 (installation is sold for $75) or your own electrician can install a Gig II and will usually do it for $50 but they have to take a test pay a small fee and be certified as registered installers. - Of the $600 for the Gig II, you receive $150 commission.

#2. - If you get a prospect to simply take a free survey, put out by New Age Power Bids, you get $2 just for them taking the survey.

#3. - If they sign up and you are their sponsor, you get $7 more per person.

#4. - If they sign up, New Age Power will become their electrical supplier. Your electric bill will be divided into two components. Your normal Utility company will supply the power from the grid to your house and will service you if there are any transmission problems, but New Age Power will become your electrical provider. New Age wil forever after, pay you a fee of 1.2% of your selectees total monthly electrical bills. Only one bill comes to your house monthly, issued from the giant Utility Provider.

#5. - Anyone you sign up goes on your down line and you earn additional residuals from them.

THE AMOUNTS OF MONEY TO BE MADE CAN BE ENORMOUS IF YOU KNOW LARGE GROUPS OF PEOPLE. - One woman at the meeting deals with churches and private schools. She cites a church with a congregation of 5,000 families in Orange County California with a well known pastor who she is good friends with. She says that she will approach the pastor and suggest a fund raising activity to benefit the church. She will asked the pastor to put on a church event, requesting all members to purchase the Gig II.

THE GIG II IS GUARANTEED - A consumer may use it for up to 6 months and if not satisfied, the company will refund their entire $600 plus their $75 installation fee, no questions asked.

A POTENTIAL SCENARIO FOR A BIG CHURCH - They hold a festive event with food, carnival rides or whatever church's do. The Woman sponsoring the event speaks and the Pastor speaks and urges the families to save themselves 18% on the electric bills and help save the environment 18% in power wastage. She thinks he will get 3,000 families to take the survey and she will make $6,000 from that. She will allow the Pastor and his Church to keep the $7 fee for each sign up, so the Church will receive $21,000 for putting on the fund raiser. Now, here is something very important - The Church will receive $21,000 for getting the person to sign up but that is all that they get, they are then out of the picture. The woman will be the official sponsor. She will receive the $150 commission for selling the 3000 Gig II's. That comes to a cool $450,000 plus she will receive 1.2% of the 3000 families electrical bills from here on out. Say the average bill is $200 a month per family, she would receive $2.40 per month from 3000 families which is $7,200 per month in residuals. Also, when any of those 3000 families get their friends to sign up, she is eligible for receiving further residuals because they are on her down line.

The cost to sign up with Power Bids is $149 flat, a one time registration fee.

SUMMARY - If you know the heads of large groups such as Church's or Private Schools, I think you could make yourself a multi millionaire within a few months. I spoke to this woman and she is already on the affluent side but she is already counting her new found millions and she hasn't even scheduled the first event. I don't see how she can miss if the Pastor goes along with her and schedules the fund raising event.

For people who do not have such connections, let us reduce the sign ups from 3000 down to say 30 a month, or 1 % of what she is going to make. You would get the entire $9 for the surveys and signing people up which would amount to $270 and then you would get $150 for selling 30 Gig II's which is $4,500 and then you would receive about $72 a month in residuals from here on out and if any of those thirty you sold signed up more people, you would get additional residuals from them being on your down line.

I don't know about selling 30 of those Gig II boxes every month doing cold selling. The one big thing you have going for you is that everybody has to purchase electrical power from some source no matter what, and with your 18% savings, they will ultimately save money if they buy from you. In about 6 to 9 months, the cost of the Gig II will be amortized and it will be all savings from there on out.

Of all the many money making schemes which come down the road, this one has a lot of good features which most do not have.

Great pics, Rog.

I got to know a number of Aussies while in the SO and on the Ship. After Scn I made a few business/vacation trips to Oz and did a couple of JV projects with some Aussies. I got a crick in my neck every time I was there from looking at the Southern Cross and the Southern sky every night.:)

One of my children did her study abroad at Melbourne U…I had her “boost” her college’s gown (Ormond) for me as Daddy’s souvenir. She was one of the students that worked the venues at the Olympics and was at the Y2K shindig in Sydney. She spent several months traveling the whole continent with a rail pass and loves all things Australian.:)

When folks ask me what Australia and Aussies are like I tell ‘em, “They’re a lot like us, except we have our Founding Fathers and they have they’re Founding Felons.” :coolwink:

Rog - Absolutely incredible pictures! I wouldn't worry about the riff raff spoiling your beaches, Oz is so far away, most riff raff don't have the money or the time to make the trip there.

I was thinking of some of the areas where other countries were number one and came up with a few things past and present.

Australia - It used to be tennis, track stars such as milers, swimmers, weird looking animals such as kiwis, Crocodile Dundee and yes, beaches.

Austria - Great source of classical musicians, opera skiing, Vienna woods.

China, Rice, Tea, Chinese Food, biggest population, oldest continuous country.

Czech Republic - Perhaps Prague is the most beautiful city in the world. Only real competition is from Paris or several Italian cities.

England - Keeping a stiff upper lip, far flung Empire at one time, good writers, excellent in ships and sea navigation, horse racing.

France - Food and cooking, architecture, losing wars, Wine, women with hairy legs and armpits, beautiful medieval castles, artists and art work, joy of living.

Germany - Automobiles, good products that work, trains & busses running on time, beautiful medieval castles, the autobahn, organization and getting things done, classical music, number one in beer.

India - Vedic Religions, best jungles in the world, elephants, curry sauce.

Israel - Most technology per person and per tiny land size, holy land for 3 major religions, Yiddish language (now pretty much dead), medicine, education, oldest people still extant.

Italy - Food, Opera, Joy of Living, expressive language, architecture, art movies, Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Gallileo, love.

Japan - Long ago took over #1 in manufacturing, high quality control, most dedicated employees to being a part of a large company family, sushi, sashimi, bushido warriar's code, martial arts.

Kenya - Distance runners.

Mexico - Friendly and warm people, high work ethic of people, great tasting food, use of colors, murals on buildings

Russia - Greatest land mass, a history of top authors, strong in music, hardy people, vodka.

Sweden - The highest percentage of "Hot" women, the welfare state, foreign art movies.

Switzerland - Yodeling, skiing, mountaneous beauty, lakes.

I could go on but don't want to get too verbose. Being a proud American, I am citing several important areas where we are not number 1 in the world. In such a varied world, being number 2 or 3 can also be very good. Second best beaches in the world? I would take it.

Rog, my bad! I had recently read that exchange which you had with the New Zealander and learned the Kiwi was indigenous to New Zealand and not Australia. I just plain forgot that I had read that a day earlier! Well, I am 70 and my short term memory is weakening but oddly, the long term memory is getting even better. More and more old incidents are popping into view or I get more perceptics from the incidents I always have been able to remember.

Maybe, you have a technical reason for this. Don't forget, I take prescription medications for cardio conditions which I have. I think they are the culprit, not the aging but what do I know.

Well, in my defense, I said weird looking animals, such as the Kiwi, and Australia certainly has some extremely weird looking creatures native to it. Kangaroos immediately come to mind and how about the duck billed platypus? What spiritual being's nightmare did that unsightly looking creature emanate from? My point was that I admit that the USA does not claim #1 ranking in all categories but we are usually in the top ten, maybe even the top 5 on most things which are important.

Lakey,

Sounds like a scam.

There is no "leakage" in a power meter.

The company being dealt with is New Age Power Brokers of Texas.

newagepowerbrokers.com has its administrative contact being "Prince Uchendu".

Prince Uchendu is listed on complaints.com as

PRINCE EMEKA UCHENDU Born 1966 Aged 42 years Nigerian

AKA: PRINCE UCHENDU

AKA: PRINCIE UCHENDU

AKA: IDS Ventures Corporation

It sounds like yet another Multi-Level-Marketing scam.

I am not so sure you are correct in your assessment. First of all, their whole premise is that there is leakage. If that was not true, they would have been closed down immediately for fraud. You assert there is no leakage but do you have anything tangible to back it up. The man who gave the lecture said that on his home meter, he could discern the meter spinning slower immediately after his Gig II was installed. IN ANY CASE THE COMPANY OFFERS A FULL REFUND OF THE $675, NO QUESTIONS ASKED, IF YOU DO NOT BELIEVE THE DEVICE IS LOWERING YOUR ELECTRICAL USAGE SIGNIFICANTLY. They are currently operating in 15 states and if they were not refunding the $675 as promised, they would have been closed down quickly in all those states.

Next, all they want from their distributors is a one time $145 payment. If it was a scam, something like that Government Contracts operation with Svetlana, they were going for $4,500. Why risk going to prison for a measely $145 per person registration fee?

Then your assessment that it is just another multi-level marketing scam has no teeth to it and you apparently did not read my description very thoroughly. First of all, not all multi-level companies have been scams. Amway is a very fine company, I don't know if Shaklee is still around but they were honest and Mary Kay Cosmetics is a strong and honest company just to name a few.

This operation has very little multi level marketing. Items #1 and #2 have no multilevel marketing at all. Item 3 pays the seller a $150 sales commission - I believe the people on the seller's upline receive some smaller residuals so there is a bit of multi level marketing there. Same thing with the 1.2% fee paid on the client's electric usage, I believe there is some residual there as well. ACTUALLY THEIR SLIDE SHOW WAS BROKEN LAST NIGHT SO WE DID NOT GET THE ENTIRE PROGRAM BUT WERE GIVEN A WEBSITE TO CHECK OUT.
www.newagepowerbids.com/

I appreciate your efforts to alert us to a possible scam but what you have written has not influenced me in the least to not look into the company further. I will do my own research and let the board know what I came up and if I agree with Enthetan. We are supposed to go to another meeting in the next couple of weeks to complete our full briefing.

There is a tendency to dismiss anything that comes along as a con game and many if not most new ventures are but once in a while a real opportunity does come around. Before dismissing an alleged opportunity, one should do a careful study in my opinion. Too cursory of a "look" may cost you a lost opportunity.

Enthetan may be right on this.

I did some research and found the exact GIG 2 that they brought to the meeting. It was tested as described below. The test results do not look good, in fact it does look like a hoax.

One other thing. I went to www.newagepowerbids.com/ This looks like a different company than what Enthetan found. It looks like it is a legimate company dealing in electrical service. Their website doesn't mention anything about the GIG 2 device. They just extoll the virtues of deregulation and claim that you can save big money on your electrical bill by choosing a provider with the lowest rates. They claim that they gather bids from the various providers and lead you to the lowest bid. That seems to be all they do, they find rates from all the independent providers plus the big Utility companies and make sure you get the best available rate. The bill you get from your big utility company is adjusted by whatever it is they do and it is seamlessly incorporated into the monthly power bill which you receive.

The promoters of the event I attended appear to be combining two business ventures and making it seem as if it were one. They tie New Age Power Bids in together with the GIG 2 as if it were all one company. New Age may be an honest power bidding provider, locating the best rates for its clients while GIG 2 may be a scam company selling a worthless electrical box for $600. The box apparently does nothing at all. By the way, the testing agency says that the company does not offer any warantee whatsoever on the GIG 2, i.e. they do not give you back your $675 as they claimed in the meeting.

THIS COULD BE A SCHEME TO SELL THE $600 GIG 2. That is where all the money is for them, in the sale of that product which though highly touted does not have any tangible benefits. Selling that product probably was difficult so for marketing purposes, they brought New Age Power Bids into the picture and combined New Age and the GIG 2 into seemingly one program. On New Age Power Bids, they make $9 a sale plus typically 6 cents a month indefinitely from every sale, this part of their business is set up on a multi level marketing system but the amounts earned are tiny unless you sell to thousands of people. The real money both for them and for anyone joining this program is the $600 box for which they pay you $150 commission. That box probably only costs them something like $25 to manufacture and is apparently worthless. They put the box on a multilevel marketing plan as well.

Anyway, I now believe Enthetan is right about the GIG 2. Signing up with New Age Power Brokers may be okay, but you are only talking about $2 per survey and $7 per sign up plus 1.2% residual on the persons electric bill. On a $50 bill, this would be 6 cents a month. Therefore, your potential on a given client is only $9.00 up front and 6 cents a month residual. You would have to sell over 500 clients a month to make $5,000 per month. That means you need to sell about 25 people a day, working a 5 day week. There appears to be no money in that and who can drum up 25 sales every single day. The theory is that everyone needs power any and they will usually sign up to receive lower rates if there is no additional cost to them. Using this thinking, it might be possible to sign up thousands of clients if large rallies are held. Maybe buying your power using New Age power bidders is sensible. At least you save on your monthly bill but that is about it. The program taken as a whole appears to be a scam.

HERE ARE THE RESULTS OF TESTING THE GIG 2 WHICH I FOUND ON THE INTERNET - I SHOW ONLY THE HIGHLIGHTS

HomeProductsDeceptions

..........snip other tested products to get to the GIG 2>...............

Contact usPrivacy StatementNews Voltage Control Guard or VCG1
AC neutral bus electromotive power rectification device
The GiG 2 web site claims savings of 15% to 28% in single phase applications (household power is single phase). I'd classify it as an unworkable device except that the sales pages lead consumers to believe that they will get substantial energy savings when the most likely improvement is zero. Most residential loads are purely resistive (electric hot water tanks, baseboard electric heating, electric stoves, incandescent lights etc.) and there is absolutely nothing you can do to improve these kinds of circuits.

After my first version of this page, I received correspondence, including some lab results from the company and it appears that like many inventors, they really believe they have a technological breakthrough and that success is just around the corner. I wish them luck. Unfortunately, other than notoriously unreliable consumer testimonials, there is nothing to back up these energy saving claims.

I reviewed the lab results and found the experiment to be fundamentally flawed. It consisted of a single 24 hour kWh totalization of energy usage with an undefined variable load (a bank of PC's). The single data point indicated a reduction of 7% in energy use. You have to control all the independent variables and show that results are repeatable. As for the testing company -- shame on you for shoddy work and providing a report that would have received an F as a university lab assignment.

If the claims were true, using a savings of only 5% on the US generation capacity of 4157 million MWh (in 2007) -- the annual savings would be in the billions of dollars in the USA alone. The obvious approach would be to patent, publish and then license the technology -- it would become standard equipment everywhere, the inventor would be richer than Bill Gates and a Nobel prize would follow.

There is no electrical theory to support the idea of any device that can perform this feat. The closest device is the power factor correction unit, but this only saves money in a commercial setting with inductive loads. So, immediately we are off to a bad start. Claims that defy our current our understanding of physics should immediately raise red flags.

From the marketing material, we have the following claims:

The Voltage Control Guard is a revolutionary device that returns unused energy to proper phase and polarity on the neutral side, thus decreasing the over all demand within the system. It does not store or consume energy, and it has no moving parts, capacitors, or resistors. Additionally, the VCG does not require the use of surge suppressors or spike protection. ... we use no capacitors, resistors, surge protection, spike protection, or moving parts. Our technology is revolutionary and patented, it has been independently proven, third party tested and supported by substantial case study data and consumer testimonials to verify that our product provides the savings reflected in our literature.

Consumers are not equipped to test energy saving devices and their testimonials are meaningless, even if well meaning. No device that connects to incoming power lines has ever been demonstrated achieving massive energy savings - so don't hold your breath.

Voltage Control Guard has a UL 916 rating and is approved by Met Labs. Additional third party testing was performed by an independent laboratory and achieved positive results. Independent lab tests are an ongoing part of our research and development.

In single phase electrical installations we are seeing savings ranging from 15 to 28 percent reduction in daily KWH. This is not believable. These are huge savings. The sponsored lab result provided showed 7% savings and this can be explained by other uncontrolled variables.

we make no warranties of any kind, express or implied, and specifically disclaim, following the term of the limited warranty, any warranty of merchantability, fitness of the device for a particular purpose, ... That at least, seems like a good idea.

Technical analysis

Here is an analogy. You want to save on your water bill and are interested in the "miracle flush". You purchase it and a plumber comes to your home and installs an extra 1 inch pipe in parallel with your 4" sewer pipe. The toilet is supposed to now use less water to flush. The problem is that the toilet flushes a volume of water equal to the capacity of the flush box - so you achieved nothing. Same goes for electrical appliances -- if you turn on a 1000W hair dryer for an hour, you burn 1kWh of energy. It doesn't matter what you do to the sewer or bus bar, the hair dryer is not going to get hotter, blow harder or somehow use 30% less energy to dry your hair.

Several things came to mind as I watched the video:

1) In scientology I found my authentic self

2) In scientology I lost my authentic self

3) The linear scientology model, i.e. the Bridge, routing forms, checksheets, case supervisor instructions, all the now-I'm-supposed-to's, stem from the industrial age. It is a manufacturing model doomed to failure in the modern world.

My closing comments on the Electrical opportunity

Enthetan PMed me concerning the New Age Power Bidders issue. In answering I came up with the final theory as follows: New Age Power Bids is a legitimate compnay and if you sign with them they shop your electric bill around and save you some money, perhaps 10% or as much as 18% in the summer months. Some electrical engineer signed up with New Age and decided to do multilevel marketing with them. At $9 per client plus !.2% month residual on each client's electric bill, the profits were just too small to bother with. This engineer was connected to the Gig 2 box which already existed. He concocted a scheme to market the worthless Gig 2 box at a high price $675 installed. The scheme tells the customers they will lower their electrical bill by 10% to 18% is they sign with New Age and purchase the Gig 2 box.

Let's say the Gig 2 is worthless but the consumer signs up with New Age Power Bidders, buys the Gig 2 and has it installed at their home. Probably what will happen is that their electrical bills will drop by 10% to 18% because New Age will find a less expensive provider than So. Cal Edison. THE CONSUMER WILL FALSELY ATTRIBUTE THE PRICE REDUCTION TO THE GIG 2 BOX WHEN REALLY, IT IS A LOWER PRICED PROVIDER! In this manner, the customer will be satisfied seing his bill drop significantly and fear that if he asks for his $675 to be returned, his bill will go back to its former levels. Meanwhile GIG 2 was able to sell one of its wortheless boxes for $600 and pay $150 of that to the person who made the sale, still keeping about $425 profit on every box they sell, assming it costs them $25 to make a GIG 2 unit.

It is a nifty little scheme. Its centerpiece is adding a worthless piece of equipment into the sale and making a huge profit on it, allowing a hefty sales commission to be paid. The 10% to 18% reduction in the electric bill is achieved as promised, although the Gig 2 box had nothing to do with it. In this manner, the sellers of the box make a huge mark up but they don't get into trouble with the authorities because the savings they promised the consumer are achieved. The fact is that the exact same savings would be achieved without purchasing the worthless box but that goes unnoticed. Probably, though the manufacturer will not refund the $675, the marketing company will. This refund is factored into the high cost of the unit and keeps any dissidents from taking further action. Actually, it is a well thought out scheme. The consumer, the marketing company and the multilevel sales people all come out ahead. Some consumers unnecessarily spend $675 but they eventually make it up on their electrical bills and smart consumers get their money back. Very clever scam. A lot of money can be made without anyone seriously getting ripped off. Many get ripped off for $675 but they never know they were ripped off and are satisfied with the deal!
