Ok Mystic, you got me to post. I know others may point to other horses, including Zenyatta. Zenyatta is indeed a great athlete, and us old fardts who remember the 73 Belmont all feel dispair that Secretariat was cheated out of years of record breaking due to the original agreement with the owners of his sire/mare. Yes, it saved Meadow Farm in Doswell, VA, but the world was denied perhaps 12 to twenty more record breaking races. They just tied up Secretariat's dick and sold that stuff for blood money.
BTW, Ron Turcotte was at first chastised for letting Sec run so fast, but in interviews later Turcotte didn't feel, notice, surmised ANY fatigue in the great animal. If you can get the full length of the run, he was on the muscle long long after the race...probably a true record that will never be approached. Asked if Secretariat was spent, Turcotte firmly said he could have run another lap. Also, Turcotte said riding Secretariat was like riding on a cloud, smoothest ride imaginable.
But for naught...a real crime to a horse that only wanted to race. He had fun at Claiborne Farm for sure but was bewildered why he never saw a track again. It was for money....bastards. (Note: I am not suggesting Sec should have been run into the ground, but he easily had one or two more years left in that astounding physique.)
