Re: The old days - Aboard the Apollo - 1973

... I think that there is a lesson here for all of us – make sure you know what your politicians are letting you in for!

Axiom142

More importantly for american audiences, the important lesson is that deregulation in its various forms (i.e. less regulation of private corporations, lack of effective oversight of financial institutions, strangulation of funding of necessary government regulatory agencies, etc.) is NOT a panacea for economic ills. Excellent evidence exists to support the contention that the host of economic ills plaguing the nation are rooted in the political fervor of deregulation which has become the new orthodoxy of the last thirty years.

What has evolved in the u.s. throughout this time as a result of such ill-conceived policies is a society where corporate profitability has increased enormously and large aggregations of private wealth have become commonplace while the economic stability of the general citizenry as well as the national welfare have declined precipitously. It's a rush to repeat the follies of the 19th century.

I love your graphic. That one little insignificant fish caused a small ripple in the oceans of the world but the little ripple, though remaining small, just keeps spreading out.

Its very funny, thinking about it. One nearly insignificant person who was a lowly Director of Disbursements at a Class IV Scientology Celebrity Centre Org, started this thread and this windbag and opinionated nobody caused a small ripple to occur on the huge world of the internet.

My goal for the thread when it was just the Apollo story was 5,000 views; months later when I added the Celebrity Centre story, I hoped for 10,000. Then Carmelo contacted me by PM and said he liked the thread and we should work together and get into the top 10 biggest threads on ESMB. At that time, December, 2009, it took about 31,000 views to be number 10. The rest is history.

Nowadays, I am a minor player here. Others are doing the heavy lifting. Still, if things slow down a little, I'll jump in and stir up the pot a little.

The thing I am most proud of is researching and printing the story of how CCLA got started. I knew a lot about CCLA, arriving there only about 6 months after they opened for business. I wanted to know what happened those first 6 months and also the months immediately before the official opening.

Meeting Purple Haze was the big breakthrough, which opened those early months for me. Also, I met up with the registrar Hector who was one of the first non tech people on staff and got lots of data from him. This year, I met with Don Keeler whom I used to hate and got still more data from the early days from him plus I no longer hate him and think he is a good man. Also, on the period before the actual opening, Janice Grady, Yvonne's Daughter, and Dart Smohen chipped in a lot to flesh out that part of the story.

I have written the only story on the internet about the actual origins of Celebrity Centre. Its my story. I researched it and put it together on my own. The story exists on the Google Search engine under "Scientology Celebrity Centre - Story of Origin". I am proud that I wrote that story. That little fishie in Hat's graphic can can wink with pride about that story of CCLA.

A few words in defense of the United States of America. She has many things wrong with her right now. But, she fundamentally has far more things that are right with her. In my judgment, there has never been a time in the past 60 years when it has been more important for citizens to demonstrate their love for America than now.

I get the impression some folks question my values and the messages in my columns. They may see me as a preachy Holier-than-thou patriotic moralist. In a way, they are right. I am a dedicated patriot. America is founded on a system of Judeo-Christian values that I embrace.

I have a strong sense of what is right and what is wrong. I reject all political correctness because it denies truth and promotes lies as truths. I am not afraid to tell the world what I think. But people are free to disagree with me. People can agree to disagree here in America. That is one of the reasons I am a patriot. We are free to express our opinions.

There are many things that need fixing in our country. Principally with our Government and its bureaucracy at all levels. A favorite topic for me. But today I want to write a little about what is still right with America, using my own life as an example.

I am an old blind caregiver. Anywhere else in the world, I would be respectfully (or not) ignored. Here I am allowed to say what I want to say even though folks may not agree with me. I am most grateful to the Owner, Publisher and Editors of the Fairfield Daily Republic for honoring our right and tradition of free speech. I have been expressing myself here for more than 25 years. What patience! What tolerance! Through the vehicle of the local free press, I have been able to generate new friendships and learn. I hope I have also been a positive influence in the community. Believe it or not, I have had my opinion changed. Only in America!

My useful life has been extended by American technology. I communicate daily with folks all over America with ease. Still learning. I have contributed to national publications. I have publicly disagreed with our local, state and national leaders. Here I am, still free and still alive. I love America!

Over the years I have been passionate about causes. Many successful folks have shared those passions with me and have contributed their support. Without their generosity, nothing would have been possible. Right now I am privileged to head a non-profit, Tools of Learning for Children, which promotes literacy and good citizenship. For a dozen years the people I have shared these visions with have encouraged me and inspired me to believe anything is possible. They have helped make the impossible possible Out of these giving relationships have come warm friendships . It has given me great satisfaction to share loving, caring friendships. It is one of the truly great joys of my life. American values and rewards.

America is filled with good people. Good hearts. One friend helped me when I first lost most of my sight. She took me to her acupuncturist every week for months in the hope it would help. She even paid the bill. It didn't help but it filled my heart and built a lasting friendship. This same person has raised almost two hundred foster kids over the years. I have been a happy beneficiary of this kind of American giving. Giving from the heart..It's a mutual benefit kind of thing. People want to help me and I want to help them. American values.

America is still the land of opportunity. Many of my friends started out in life with virtually nothing. Because of opportunities unique to America, they made good lives for themselves. I am one of them. I started with nothing, gave America three years of my life and, in return, gained an education and successful careers. A good life. Look around, it is still happening today.

Now at my very mature age, I have many loving friends who hold out their arms and say, "How can I help you". They have filled my life.
Honesty, morality and fair play are the essences of America. I embrace them. You and I are the most fortunate beneficiaries of those uniquely American qualities. I happily celebrate them and give thanks for them. I am sorry that so many of us take those things for granted.

So, no one should be surprised if I rally to the defense of our country. I believe it is being threatened. Yes, un-American partisan politics offend me and are a danger to our survival as a nation. I believe that the desire for personal power and beliefs that are in conflict with our Constitution and the Rule of Law are major threats to our Freedoms. I protest. I believe as an American I have a responsibility to speak out. And I invite everyone to join me.

Yes, there are many, many good things about America. We can celebrate them together while we combat the threats to our way of life. Celebrate them as I do. Embrace loving friends. Help those who need help and accept help if you need it. Don't just sit there, find something to do that will make life better for others and for future generations. Support morality, honesty and fair play.. Create opportunities for the young. I call that being a good American. Those are my values and my message.

There I go, preaching again. I am lucky, proud and happy to be an American. Are you?

Re: The old days - Aboard the Apollo - 1973

I just had a surprise as I opened up ESMB to post the above piece on America. I saw my "Notifications" was live with content, in which I found frhidden had done a "liked" of a post I couldn't remember. It turned out it was one I did way back in my early days on ESMB . . . actually, on my Birthday, in April 2009.

When I went to see what it was, I was a little amazed at what I had written back there. But it was wonderful for me to read it again.

It's a story about relationships . . . . and the benefits of being able to do it right :p

I was responding to Mystic on a thread he's started under the title: Spiritual/Consciousness Experiences

My Biggest Ascending Spiritual Awareness.

Spiritual Consciousness

Good call Mystic. It is an important thread to have started. For those who wish to participate, it will likely validate, restore and even enhance these states as have occurred for them.

In my boyhood, when very young before the culture I grew up in invalidated such natural faculties, I did have relatively frequent states of being spiritually aware. That is, I perceived spiritually and was aware of spiritual things. But, being spiritually illiterate and growing up in a culture that saw all this as being “childhood imaginations,” I had nothing to align or understand these awarenesses with; and so they were lost to superimposed scientific think that man is only a bunch of atoms in aligned but random action.

But my most important spiritual ascension and transforming spiritual experience, more so than any I’ve already written on on this board, occurred in London in April, 1968.

I had been having wonderful wins as a staff member on London Day & Foundation. On the last Thursday of March that year, I acted to report misdeeds by the acting ED (relieving Ellen Jones while at Flag on OT3) and his wife the HCO Exec Sec that had crashed the stats from a Condition of Power (as Ellen had left them) to Non-Existence---this done in seven miserable days. Per Policy, I by-passed a Danger Condition, and telexed WW the info they needed.

The response was an SO Mission comprising the same twits that had crashed St Hill and WW and shot Reg Sharpe out of hand (and lied about him to LRH) in the latter part of 1967 (or was it early ’68?).

The outcome was that I was assigned a Condition of Enemy, and physically routed out of the org premises and off of staff. Enemy in those days was the lowest Eth Condition . . . and due to idiot think that failed to understand actual policy, it equated as SP in their dull little minds; hence the stupid response of routing me out of the org and off staff.

I knew I was not the enemy in this parade of nonsense, but I did have some responsibility in the matter that I had to assume or recover . . . as in, I had failed to prevent it, at least. And so I wanted to find out what enemy conditions might have existed within myself that could have blinded me to the forces at hand or which might have led to or enabled the situation to occur.

Thus I set to to see what I could learn that would enable me to better prevent such stupidities in the future. And I carried out the formula for the Condition of Enemy.

But it was carried out from the perspective of me establishing (or reconfirming) with certainty who and what the real me is in the context of what is my true state of existence, powers, abilities, virtues, capacities, intentions, actions, etc.

In order to do that I resorted to all the basics: the Axioms (Dn and Scn), the Logics and Pre-Logics, the Factors and the Axioms of SOP 8-C, to see if I could spot what might help me. I already knew all this stuff pretty much verbatim, but the exercise was one wherein I would read and digest each point while comparatively applying to myself.

The ascension happened while digesting the Axioms of SOP 8-C, on the point of DUPLICATION — “FUNDAMENTAL: The basic action of existence is duplication.” (LRH has some rather neat things to say on duplication in those particular axioms)

I suddenly saw and experienced that I am a true total spiritual Beingness capable of perfectly duplicating, as is, all conditions of existence, all actions and deeds and stupidities of others; their good and their evil; that I am able to fully know myself and others, and that I can choose what conditions of existence I allow to continue to persist but conditions I choose not to have continue to exist I can change and undo simply by wholly duplicating them, as is, and evaporating their existence.

It was an amazing experience. It totally blew my “zorch.” I felt fully omni-responsible, caring, influencing and causative. All the evil that had been leveled against me I saw evaporating as I permeated it fully and duplicated it perfectly in the manner described in the Scn axioms. I suddenly felt I had no enemies, anywhere! All could be made friends. I experienced the ability to undo all oppositions, evils, counter-intentions, etc., while at the same time being able to experience, honor and validate wanted worthwhile conditions.

This was a colossal change for me, for up till that time my instinct and automaticities had me either ignoring or otherwise opposing, fighting or resisting evil and those who disagreed with me or invalidated me . . . . I did not duplicate and as-is the unwanted, but instead unwittingly caused it to persist and ridge up on and against me!

That was a colossal ascension to hugely higher awareness and abilities.

But stage two of the ascension was the best part of all. It occurred the next day, late in the morning.

On April 6th, 1968, I was walking up Hampstead Hill (it’s a famous road in N.W. London) and ahead of me was a little old lady slowly walking under the weight of her shopping bags. As I connected with her, I spiritually perceived what a lovely Being she was; but I also perceived she was struggling under suppressed pain.

As I drew up beside her and really felt how wonderful a person she was, I said to her, “Would you like me to help you and carry your bags up the hill for you?”

She turned her bent body to look at me, and the most wonderful, loving and appreciative smile shone from her face, and spiritually she totally opened up to me, actually embracing me. “Yes, thank you!”

But while she was saying that and rearranging her hands to pass the bags I found myself wholly spiritually present with her, totally, perfectly duplicating her and her conditions, the total truth of them as is, such that the untoward conditions were evaporating “before my eyes” as I did so, while the good and wanted remained and were enhanced.

It was a most amazing experience to be feeling the energy of these unwanted, troublesome conditions of hers blowing off as I permeated them, viewing them as is. And it was also amazing to see her actually straightening up and youthful delight returning to her face. And of huge interest to me personally was the finding that throughout the whole action I could concurrently perceive and recognize both the unwanted, untoward conditions to be undone, along with and in comparison to the wanted, ideal conditions to be maintained or restored and enhanced.

It was as though she shed twenty or so years of aging wear and tear by our mutual action.

It was an amazing experience we were sharing, and one of total love and appreciation between Beings at a spiritual level.

As she passed me the bags, she again said, “Thank you.” But this time with far more sparkle in her eyes and smile. Before me stood a younger, taller woman than the one I had first encountered.

And I said, “You are welcome. Not everyone you meet on the street is an enemy.” And I was smiling ear to ear for I knew what I was talking about.

But the key to this particular spiritual awareness experience is that it was not me alone . . . it was me relating to another!

You see, most of my other great ascensions were really only to do with me alone. I ascended and had a huge awareness . . . so what! Where does that get you?

This game of life is to do with relationships and relating. It is to do with other people being connected to you and how you handle and process that connectedness. Screw that up and you are for the shit heap! That’s what the order of magnitude of this particular state of ascended spiritual awareness was for me as compared to my other major ascensions (some of which I have posted on ESMB).

Then as my new friend and I walked up the hill together, I began to notice that the first bursts of spring rebirth in the form of buds and shoots on the trees and other plants in the gardens were occurring. And I grokked that too, for it also had special significance to me that day.

A year to remember was 1968, in more ways than one.

Thanks for posting this Rog. This guy Murray Bass sounds like a wonderful man. I read all of his article and totally agree with every word, expecially the part about not being politically correct.

The radio commentator, Dennis Prager, often invites his audience to imagine how things would be if American had not developed into a Super Power and contrast them with things the way they are now. By doing this, it is apparent to me that the World is much better off because of America's existence than it would otherwise be.

Yes, I thanked him for sending me the article and mentioned I'd forwarded it onto others who'd appreciate it.

This was his response:
Thanks. Somehow we have to get away from being partisans and return to being just Americans. MB

This is key. Everything should revolve around this: "Don't just sit there, find something to do that will make life better for others and for future generations."

Politicians talk of jobs. Jobs give me a backache. Too often, Jobs simply suck. As long as politicians give handouts of food, money, telephones, housing, and more, who would want a job? Politicians should be, if they are statesmen and leaders, talking about service to one another and country, and the future.

Anna Mary Robertson Moses (September 7, 1860 – December 13, 1961), better known as "Grandma Moses", was a renowned American folk artist. She is often cited as an example of an individual successfully beginning a career in the arts at an advanced age. Although her family and friends called her either "Mother Moses" or "Grandma Moses," she first exhibited as "Mrs. Moses," yet the press eagerly dubbed her "Grandma Moses," which stuck." [1] LIFE magazine celebrated her 100th birthday by featuring her on its September 19, 1960 cover.
Grandma Moses' paintings were used to publicize numerous American holidays, including Thanksgiving, Christmas and Mother's Day. Exemplary of her status, a Mother's Day Feature in True Confessions (1947) noted how "Grandma Moses remains prouder of her preserves than of her paintings, and proudest of all of her four children, eleven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren." [2]
During the 1950s, Grandma Moses' exhibitions were so popular that they broke attendance records all over the world. "A cultural icon, the spry, productive nonagenarian was continually cited as an inspiration for housewives, widows and retirees. Her images of America's rural past were transferred to curtains, dresses, cookie jars, and dinner ware, and used to pitch cigarettes, cameras, lipstick and instant coffee." [1]
In 1950, the National Press Club cited her as one of the five most newsworthy women and the National Association of House Dress Manufacturers honored her as their 1951 Woman of the Year. At age 88, Mademoiselle magazine named Grandma Moses a “Young Woman of the Year.” Philadelphia’s Moore College of Art awarded her its first honorary doctorate degree. Due to a lingering cold, she received the degree in absentia, presenting her acceptance speech via a special telephone hookup. [1]

what I really came here to say

British painter Hockney reveals iPad art
By Beatrice Debut | AFP – 1 hour 49 minutes ago

British artist David Hockney, one of the most influential painters of his generation, is to stage an exhibition of his landscapes from his native Yorkshire, including recent works produced on an iPad.

A total of 151 works will be shown, including giant paintings such as "Winter Timber" (2009), a woodland clearing painted in violet and blue on 15 canvases, films shot while driving through the forest, and drawings made using his iPad.
The exhibition, "David Hockney: a Bigger Picture", will run at the Royal Academy of Arts in London from January 21 until April 9. Featuring some never-before-seen works, it focuses on the Bradford painter's home county of Yorkshire in northern England.

The rural theme comes shining through, with many works depicting country tracks or produced at the side of a path.

Using an iPad has brought Hockney new freedom in his country forays.
The 74-year-old can "take it everywhere with him instead of carrying oil paint and brushes and watercolours and colour pencils and ink," one of the exhibition's curators, Marco Livingstone, said at the press launch Wednesday.

"You could work instantly when inspiration took you. And he can instantly send it to his friends."

The iPad art is created using the Brushes application, drawn with the finger or a special pen.

They "have their own quality", Livingstone told AFP.

Once printed out, "they look like sort of paintings but they are on paper. They look like watercolours but the colour is more dense. They look like gouache but the colour is more transparent."

Hockney said getting out in the dales and moors of Yorkshire had changed his view on the seasons, particularly winter.

"I thought it was too cold and too dark," he said during a rare press conference.
"And I realised how beautiful the winter was: it was not black and white, it was not grey, in fact sometimes a lot more colours than the summer."
Dressed in a grey, double-breasted pinstripe suit and brown shoes, with a black and white hooped tie and polka-dot pocket square, the chain-smoker posed indoors for photographers with an unlit cigarette in his mouth.
He hopes the exhibition will make visitors "watch the spring a little more carefully".

In 2005, Hockney returned to Yorkshire to live in the seaside town of Bridlington and three new groups of work made since then in his new surroundings are among the exhibition highlights.

The artist has a well-worn approach to finding scenes to paint.
"I drive on a little road, I have a chair in the back, I get it out, I sometimes go and sit places for quite a long time, just looking. I smoke a cigarette; contemplate," he said.

Often credited as an important figure in international Pop Art -- a label he refutes -- Hockney is known for his landscapes, portraits and representations of private spaces, such as living rooms, showers and swimming pools.
Admission to the exhibition costs £14 ($22, 16 euros).

Just as a note on monetary affairs, you've probably seen the Swissies have "pegged the SFranc to the Euro."

This was in reaction to the SF soaring in value against all other currencies this year as the international moneyed types flooded into SFs as a "safe haven" in the face of the monetary and currency tumult they see headed our way. The rise rise in the SF was actually astounding over the earlier part of this year.

Well, in my view this pegging to the Euro was a very dull move, could only have been dreamed up by the modern crop of "central bankers" in the Bernanke mold :duh:

Many years ago, when I was in the tax advice business and dealing with the Swissies, they had a better handling for the same problem of their currency rising to far too fast, such that it made their exports "uncompetitive."

What they did in the mid-later 1970's was to actually tax the foreign deposits put into their country. That is, if you were an American, for example, and you wanted safe harbor in SFs in Switzerland, they charged you (from memory) 0.5% to 1% of your deposit.

Worked fine.

That way the Swiss maintained sovereignty, curtailed excessive inflow of foreign money , , , and made a buck in the process

Surprising these modern youngsters don't learn from history! :duh:

Hi Carmelo! Thanks for the Grandma Moses bio, it is really inspiring. So is the story of Colonel Saunders. I can't think of many other late bloomers who are well known but there must be some others.

Yes, you and I have mentioned the lack of arguing on this thread. That is pretty remarkable. I think this thread is made up of intelligent people who like to discuss things, share opinions and who are open to other points of view and are even sometimes open to change. Also there is the fun factor, all the great photography and the video clips.

As it became apparent that this thread was not going to die out like other threads usually do, I thought of it as sort of a daily magazine or newspaper. People can click on and find something of interest, or something to cheer themselves up with, nearly every day. Some of the clever graphics, such as the ones put up by Hats and yoursel, Carmelo, are extremely attractive as well.
