Hmmm... Chel isn't from Boston. She's from Sacramento originally. In addition to working for me at the Sacramento Mission in 1972 she moved down to Fresno and worked for me there when I started that mission in 1973.

She is married to Randy Stith (also from Fresno) who is a modeler in the film/entertainment industry. In addition I believe she is officially the President of The Church of Scientology of California.

Very interesting thread on Boston. But most of the history seems to begin around 1975. How about some history dating back to the original "franchise"?

Alan Walter started the mission in early 1968. Initially it was located in the Prudential building in a small office suite. I arrived in the Spring of 1968 from Saint Hill. Alan had hired me away from Saint Hill to be in charge of actually getting people to come into the mission. The location was terrible... up on one of the higher floors. The initial staff when I arrived were Sandi Mehr (from Dallas), Flo Barnett (yes, that Flo, also from Dallas mission) and a guy named Pat who was also from Dallas... and who was one of the earliest Clears. It was a zoo. Flo and Pat spent most of their time at their shared apartment doing... ehhh... well, you know. Sandi wasn't happy there and I ended up sharing a small apartment with two very nice lesbians in Back Bay.

Within a month or so of arriving Alan showed up and we moved the mission across the street to a better location on Boylston. It was near all the jazz clubs and almost directly above a popular deli that was in one of the basement spaces. The new location made it easy to hand out fliers for Intro lectures and personality tests and within a few short weeks we had a steady stream of young people in the door.

Sandi left, Flo left, Pat left and a guy named Rick Hull arrived to help me and the few other staff. Rick was a very aggressive guy and for a couple of months we had a power struggle over who ought to be the ED of the mission. Here's what I could locate on him:

Years later, in the 80's, I got cable TV and CNN and there he was, anchoring the CNN news desk. He was an asshole. To me anyway and if not for a "problem" I had with my girlfriend (she was 16, I turned 18 that summer) it may have turned into a fistfight. But once her father discovered I was officially and adult he threatened to have me charged with statutory rape (or something similar) and both Alan and Rick decided I needed to leave. Which I did, in about November of that year.

Other staff and public from the time were an MIT student named Tom Buxbaum, Marvin Price - who later went to California and eventually opened a successful mission in Stockton, a guy named Mike Cohen and Tom Ford. My girlfriend was named Susanne LaCasse and she ended up leaving Scn and marrying an attorney. One guy I disseminated to was Ken Shapiro who rose to Sea Org prominence in the 70's as the top reg at ASHO. He ended up being a cutthroat reg though and burned me pretty badly when he stole some PC's from my mission in central California.

The gal on the left is Edie Tabachnik, a staff member of the Boston Mission and that handsome devil on the right is me - I haven't aged a day in the last 42 years.

I ended up at ASHO at the very end of 1968 and lost touch with what actually happened to the Mission in Boston before it morphed into an Org. I've always been curious about some of the people I worked with there and what happened to them as far as Scientology involvement.

Do you remember ?

Do any of the Boston old-timers -back in the early 70's remember "Julie Crane"--she was the Tech Sec if I recall correctly? I was very friendly with her when I met her at AOLA where we both were going OT, I'm just curious. I have no desire to hook up with her-it's that in the past on "esmb' when I ask if anyone recalls her -I get zero---she was not the shy type and was there when the sea org had sent the heavies in and she lived through those days.
 
ensifer - Thanks for filling in some of the earlier history. My history goes back to the late '70's and then only as public.
 
The renovation will crush them financialy in day to day operating costs and demands for money from uplines. It will be the Boston Achilles Heel. I don't believe they will be able to reg for more money after the reno's are complete. That is if they get that far. The execs in Boston know how to fuck up a free lunch.

I knew I'd be passing through the neighborhood of the newly purchased (Jan. 2008!) building so I made sure to bring my camera. There are a couple of hair dressing establishments on the first floor but other than that you can see from the photos there are nothing but boarded up windows.

Here's an article from the neighborhood paper (Nov. 2, 2010) that indicates the permitting process is moving forward. No word on funding the project. Hmm...

I think so. What did she look like and is it possible that she married and changed her name.

Thanks very much for that post! I got in at Boston org around 1979 (staying there into 1986) and had been unaware of much of the history you laid out.

You can get in touch with Nancy Many and ask her about Julie Crane as well. She was around Boston Org at that time and I believe she ended up marrying one of those who came in on the sea org "command team". She has a chapter in her book about her experience while in Boston.

When I came into Boston org in '79 there was a Julie Bergstrom working in Div 6. That couldn't of been her, could it? :unsure:

If not, does anyone know what became of Julie B ? Is she still in?

She's about 5 foot 5 inches tall--not real thin -but not heavy at all--dark brown hair--told me she worked at the Playboy Club for a while--great personality but then I only knew her on very friendly terms not as a 'staff member" where valences shift like the wind. THANKS
 
Has anyone heard from or know what happened to Paul Collins? He was good friends with and lived with for a while, Nils Hansen. Last I knew he moved to the mid-west. He sent my parents a xmas card about a dozen yrs ago. Don't know anymore then that. Wish he had a facebook account.
 
Boston Ideal Org update

I found the following in the Boston Globe about bricks falling out of the building purchased for conversion into our fair city's Ideal Org.

They have cordoned off the area, and the fire department and city inspectors are taking a look at the building, said Officer Eddy Chrispin, a police spokesman.

The report came in at 5:31 p.m., he said.

The Globe reported in September that the Alexandra Hotel, which is at 1769 Washington, was slated for renovation as the Church of Scientology's new 45,000 square-foot headquarters. The building had a wall that was in danger of collapsing under its own weight, according to the city's inventory of unsafe properties.

Fire crews and inspectional services teams converged on 1769 Washington St. on Wednesday night, after reports that the building was shedding bricks. That scare sparked concerns about its structural integrity.

Inspectional Services officials brought in a structural engineer to see whether the building was dangerous enough to merit immediate demolition.

The city has known about the derelict state of the South End building for years. In 2008, it made the city's most recent "Distressed Building Listing," a database of approximately 200 unoccupied and "physically distressed" properties. In September, it was among 150 buildings inspected in a citywide sweep by Boston Fire officials, after Mayor Thomas Menino established a task force to investigate unsafe properties in response to one of the biggest fires in the city's history, which swept through a Roxbury warehouse on Aug. 21.

Records indicate that as of the September inspection, the Fire Department categorized the building—which sits behind a bus stop on a busy intersection with Massachusetts Avenue—as "for external firefighting only," since it was so structurally unsound. The records identified collapsed ceilings, lose slates on the roof, and one wall that "appears in danger of collapsing under its own weight."

The building is boarded up, and much of it has been vacant for over 20 years. It became so rundown that it was taken over by the city in a receivership case in 2005, a rare last-resort measure that the city reserves for buildings that appear abandoned by property owners who are behind on their taxes. It was eventually bought by the Church of Scientology in 2008.
