Is this really that much of a stretch from forced abortions!
It's not (nor is anything) much of a 'stretch' as far as possibility, but, I'd consider it on the low order of probability given Hubbardism's basic 'immaterial thetan' theories. This leads to a bias against 'physical' alterations or even the concept of physical alterations producing 'spiritually beneficial' results.
Not that one would expect consistency in Scientology Theory, but, most inconsistency exists for purely pragmatic purposes. Including 'forced abortion'. Ron had quite a button on abortions, especially 'attempted abortions' from Dianetics on, but, for the Sea Org, it's pure pragmatism. Babies and children are a distraction and potential liability, so, eliminating them is just eliminating 'other fish to fry' and potential legal liabilities. However, the Cadet Org wasn't actually eliminated till the '90s, at which point either absolute celibacy would be necessary (attempted, but impossible to successfully enforce) or, contraception (expensive, and, in the form of oral contraceptives, implants etc. too 'druggy') would be the only alternatives.
So, forced abortions become the lesser of the available evils, and pragmatically, that's what the SO gets.
Castration is a potential PR liability far greater than forced abortions (which are bad enough, which is why they're kept secret) and unlikely to be particularly effective, as well as running contrary to the 'all spirit' paradigm, so, I'd consider them improbable.
