Who was the tight little redhead who ran Qual? She was married to a guy who went OT something or other. I was Dir Personnel and saw her, her husband (and I can't recall if the EO was Jay Armstrong or this other EO who always wore these buckskin jackets. Little guy... Lee...or Alvin or Albin or some shit?) anyway her, her husband and one of those two ethics officers...
They're in this little room off HCO just after we moved from way upstairs next to Franks' office, and this guy just came home OT... but he was like... I don't know... wtf?? about it. And his wife and one of the EO's were all over him in this room telling him he CAN'T blow he's OT he just CAN'T leave and he's going "it's bullshit... it's all bullshit..." And they saw me standing there and closed the door.
That was it. I gone.
If I had their names I finish my tale...

The redhead would have been Debbie Matson who married Larry Masters. She the only redhead I know who ran qual. However, Larry was pretty solid and as of 2001 was still doing Scn, so that does not sound like him.

My vote for the quirkiest character goes to Phil Detweiler. Another Reading PA guy. The only person in FCDC history who was fired.
He once said to an OT women when she was visibly upset about something, "I thought you were OT."
When Don Cooper attested to "Static" everyone clapped and when they were done clapping Phil said, "Is that 'a Static,' or 'the Static?'"
Priceless.
I wish I had as much fun in auditing as I am having recalling these events.

Yes, Lee Avril was the EO for a short period. He blew shortly after coming back from LA. Maybe Escalus what you witnessed was Larry and Debbie trying to talk Lee from blowing, not Debbie and Lee trying to talk Larry from blowing.

Craig Sharp, Suzy's brother, and his Baltimore roommate JED GOLDBERG, both walking ads for the dangers of Scn. Craig was plain strange, but very nice, both parents psychiatrists (or 1 a doc and one a shrink... ??). Jed was weird, loud, and had terrible personal hygiene. I think? one or both of Jed's parents were shrinks, too. Both of these characters came from rich families, and used to live together and take acid. I heard Craig had a really big one, so that may explain Tina.
We gotta find Detweiler. Hilarious.
I remember Cooper's dramatic attestation. "I'm ready for my closeup now, Mr. Hubbard." I heard he was sent as a spy to Franks's wedding as a Liability deal. Dead now.
Speaking of attestations, Peter Letterese was being continually "handled" by Wisner via auditing (Ethics would have taken him off lines for his numerous reg and 2D O's), so he was nearly comically attesting to all sorts of things every day or 2, and would usually have a self-congratulatory speech to go along with it, filled with significance and blah-blah new-age BS. This comedy material was not lost on Richards. After one particularly unctuous attest, Richards was looking around the lobby for anyone who wasn't in rapture. Our eyes met. We both bolted out the front door and cracked up laughing. Then Richards said, "Jesus Christ, what's next? 'Uh, I'd like to attest to the State of Montana'??"
Dave was a smart, funny, decent guy in the wrong place, with Wisner to urge him on, IMHO. A born leader.

It was most certainly the new OT who was the center of attention. I NEVER thought that particular guy was ever "all that" and Larry Masters sounds like the right name. If he was all ga-ga over the Qual redhead (Debbie?) then that was the same guy. he was without question the guy who was a mess. I want to say Armstrong was the third party.
In any case - yes - there were some grand and fantastic characters at FCDC in the mid-70's but two observations come to mind for me here...
1. I seem to recall great people everywhere I went in Scientology in that era, but that seems not to be the case any more. Today we seem to have a lot of pensive, angry, threatening old cranks running around inside, and "character" is in quite short supply.
2. I'm happy to remember the good moments, and always try to take the positive out of a situation. But - for me - if anybody needed proof that the "tech" was a crock, that was also where I came to that conclusion. And 33 years of NO Scientology since is proof enough for me.
Eva Jackson, Letter Reg and Chain Smoker. Marti Farra was married to Paul Konzik for a period. They divorced and last I heard, Paul was married to Linda Troutman and fathering many children who are probably all growed up and in the Sea Org.

Later they brought a crazy relative in to the mission who failed a meter check with the biggest rock slam you've never seen in a training video. One night, agitating over the mission auditor (Cheryl Hoover) and the fact that he had been routed out, he smashed the big picture window in the front of DC Mission and scared the bejabbers out of us. Craig divorced Tina and moved out to Columbine, Colorado where the school got shot up.
Not a hot chick story, but notable for its excess: Dave Enteman, formerly of Div VI, was driving around LA in a van (which doubled as his home) and wanted to blow up a building where a girl he had a thing for worked. Cops were following the van, van blew up and Dave's got room and board courtesy of the state of California for 20 years; may have been released in 2006.
Larry Masters, who was legendary for hours in the chair, routed off staff all legal and proper. He left behind his screaming, red haired wife who terrorized numerous auditors so much that the Children's Org had more CL IVs than the HGC did. If memory serves, Billy Nichols was no slouch at screaming either and cracking the whip as Tech Sec.
