There were several great gems in this! I particularly loved the reference to the "Frankenstein church". I don't know when I've heard something describing it better - something created under the pretense of life which deals in destruction - a hulking, unthinking monster destroying even what it claims to value and protect. As Karen said, no wonder it repels people.

Great video and great topic. I think a lot of people who have not been exposed to the cult themselves, don't really grasp what OSA is, or that it is a - as you said - lying machine. Their task is to uphold Hubbard and scientology in the public eye, but now, it's too late. Too many people know too much, and there is no way to change that into a favorable view about the cult. OSA has an increasingly impossible job. As the saying goes; you can't put the toothpaste back in the tube. Thanks for revealing OSA in your videos.

This video made me cry.... deeply disturbing, deeply moving. So glad Bill got out of there, got appropriate treatment and is alive today! Happy tears now..
How cold and heartless. After dedicating ones life to scientology, you are discarded. HIV positive is no longer a death sentence if one has the correct medication.

Wowzer! This one enraged me! Not the unfortunate infection with HIV, nor the rather neglectful handling of a known hemophiliac, but the dishonest and deceitful handling of events after the HIV infection became known . . . and particular the shameful handling of his wife and treatment of them as a devoted married couple.

I have taken issue with the video.. not because Bill Straass was treated so horribly & the cult placed his life at risk, but because Karen repeatedly refers to Bill "getting AIDS" from the blood transfusion. This is mistaken info based on a lack of understanding how the HIV virus works. When one is infected with the virus, they DO NOT get AIDS. If one is HIV+ and does not get treatment, he/she will eventually get full-blown AIDS.
Bill became infected with the virus & became HIV+. He did not get AIDS. This a common mistaken generalization made by people who are ignorant (uneducated) of the difference between HIV & AIDS. Obviously, Bill suffered maladies symptomatic of a suppressed immune system, and he has gotten better as a result of treatment from an AIDS cllinic, i.e., medications to increase his T-cells and lower his viral load.
"Being HIV-positive does NOT mean you have AIDS. AIDS is the most advanced stage of HIV disease. Proper treatment can keep you from developing AIDS."

I have been HIV+ since 1996. I learned my diagnosis after being admitted to a hospital with a high fever & pneumocystis pneumonia which caused my left lung to collapse. My condition was directly related to having the virus & a damaged immune system. I was deemed to be HIV+ Symptomatic. I did not have AIDS.
Generally, I liked the video because it shows the cult's total lack of concern for one of their own, when Bill needed it most. It make me think of two other Scios that are now deceased who would, no doubt, be very much alive today if they had sought appropriate medical treatment.

You are correct, of course, on the HIV transmission and misunderstanding of how AIDs happens from HIV, if it happens at all. Don't be so hard on Karen... she probably got her information from Bill. Most people are misinformed on how AIDS from HIV occurs and what AIDS actually is. Keep informing the public, Smurf. I appreciate your candor and efforts.
My question is " Does Bill currently have active AIDS? Or is he in remission and just HIV + ?

You are quite correct, technically.
But don't be hard on Karen . . . she is using the language as was common and based on the understanding at that time. I think even Bill used that language when he referred back to the events of '89.
What they are relaying here are the impact of events and knowledge of that time . . . and the language they are using is as it was at that time. For those who were in the trenches (I was) in the mid-'80's, folks were actually given a diagnosis of: "You've got AIDS."
Also, for most folks in society, even today, the language and understanding of the infection is as Karen spoke. So they will get the sentiments she is wanting to convey here.
Just so you know I am not rousing on you here, in '89 I was a board member of Health Education AIDS Liaison here in NYC working with HIV+'s . . . I actually conducted a clinical trial for them. So I know the precision of what you are saying. (My brother, Peter, succumbed to the disease before they figured out the cocktail now used for treatment.)

I got a very nice email from Bill today. He agreed with me that Karen did not know the difference between HIV & AIDS, saying he was diagnosed as HIV+ and that that the appropriate HIV meds & treatment turned his life around. No, Bill does not have AIDS (thank God).

I'm so sorry, Roger. I lost alot of friends & someone very close to me to AIDS, so I know what that feels like. After I was diagnosed, I started making funeral plans & drawing up a Living Will for my parents to follow. I've outlived them both thanks to advances in HIV research & medications.

It was because of Peter that I got involved in the AIDS scene.
He was gay and he got it due to that, but he was also a medical professional and in the earliest days of the epidemic while it was a strange syndrome with obscure and various names he twigged that there was something going on in the gay community and alerted all his friends in the community and educated them . . . the outcome being that he saved many lives. In due course he ended up in charge of the AIDS ward at the center in Sydney. He devoted his life to their care.
He also is the guy who did the clinical trial that demonstrated the efficacy of aerosol pentamidine versus oral dosage for treatment of the PCP you had. He showed it got to the infected lungs and did the job where it was needed. He presented findings at one of the international AIDS conferences. We swapped notes on what we were doing in the research area.
As he said to me over dinner with a bunch of his "Fairy" pals in '86 in Sydney when I learned of his condition: "I've had a good and full life, Rog, and lived it to the max. I'm ready to die any time it comes." His fairy friends all concurred. They were of the same mind. Those were the days when "the diagnosis" was a death sentence.
When I last saw him, again in Sydney in '91, he was hail and hearty and I thought that some of the research stuff we'd done may have got him though it all. I actually don't know for sure what he eventually died of a couple of years later. I simply got second hand info here in New York.
