Bob Weir makes history with the Marin Symphony's first Grateful Dead concert

By Paul Liberatore
Marin Independent Journal

Posted: 05/08/2011 04:23:10 AM PDT

Classic rock and classical music came together Saturday night when the Marin Symphony teamed with the Grateful Dead's Bob Weir in what was surely the longest, strangest trip of a concert in the orchestra's 58-year history.

"I guess this is a bit of a departure for you classical music buffs," a tuxedo-clad Weir cracked from the stage as a sold-out crowd made up almost entirely of Deadheads exploded in laughter.

Hardly your typical symphony-goers, the loyal Dead fans did twirly hippie dances in the aisles, batted around a beach ball and hollered "We love you Bobby" throughout the more than 3 1/2-hour concert in the 2,000-seat Marin Veterans Memorial Auditorium.

Billed as "First Fusion, A New Renaissance," the evening featured Grateful Dead songs arranged for orchestra by Stanford composer-arranger Giancarlo Aquilanti with input from Weir, a singer-guitarist who has been inducted into the Rock'n' Roll Hall of Fame as a founding member of the Grateful Dead.

To paraphrase a line from the 175-page softcover book that was printed for the occasion, the unprecedented evening could be described as the Marin Symphony meets Uncle John's Band, and it had all the pot smoke and patchouli oil and circus-like parking lot atmosphere of a typical Grateful Dead show.

Outside the concert hall, a hippie van advertised $3 fruit cups beside a sign that said "Need Gas." On the sidewalk near the entrance, a black-bearded, 23-year-old theater major from

Santa Cruz, who sported a stovepipe hat and gave his name as Finch, hawked Grateful Dead pins, hoping to raise $50 for a ticket. (He did).
Tom Kenna, a 44-year-old Deadhead in shorts, a T-shirt and flip-flops, flew in from Chicago for the concert after paying more than $600 for a pair of VIP tickets that included parties before and after the show and a photo opp with Weir, his idol.

"This is the equivalent of a Muslim taking a pilgrimage to Mecca and then meeting Mohammed," he said, holding aloft a dark beer.

The bearded, 63-year-old Weir, who has lived in Mill Valley for decades, took on the project after a symphony board member asked if he would play a fundraiser for the financially-strapped orchestra.

Weir, who now plays in the Grateful Dead revival band Furthur, agreed if they let him have the 40-plus member orchestra to experiment with. The symphony people, desperate to reach a broader audience, agreed. But it was an expensive proposition.

Originally scheduled for last fall, the concert was postponed so that ticket sales would have time to pick up and donors could be found to finance such an elaborate production. Sponsors included Fidelity Advisors, Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, Rhino Records and Men's Wearhouse, among several others.

But all the time and expense seemed worth it to symphony board member Scott Bucey, a Deadhead who wore a tie-dye T-shirt in honor of the occasion.

"This event will surely reach beyond the typical symphony audience," he said, expressing his gratitude to Weir for all the time and energy he put into the project.

Weir promised that this would be a musically adventurous journey, and it lived up to its billing. It was a bumpy ride at times, but it also had its thrilling moments.

In typical symphony fashion, the program was divided into two parts. The opening set featured Weir, singing and strumming a semi-hollow body guitar, and a core rock band of drummer Jay Lane, keyboaridst Jeff Chimenti and two bassists, Rob Wasserman and Robin Sylvester.

They were matched with a small classical ensemble that featured the Quartet San Francisco, plus additional strings, brass, woodwinds and a 10-voice chorus.

That aggregation worked through loose arrangements of the Grateful Dead songs "Cassidy, "Bird Song," "West L.A.. Fade Away," "Row Jimmy," a funky "Loose Lucy," a spacey "Let it Grow" and a bluegrass-influenced string sextet arrangement of "Friend of the Devil."

One of the intriguing attractions of the show was the chance to experience classical musicians improvising, a kind of creatively spontaneous playing that the Grateful Dead was famous for but symphony musicians aren't trained to do.

As the songs in the first set segued into each other, the classical musicians took turns playing brief solos, with predictably mixed results. You can't expect them to be good at something they never practice. But the forgiving crowd applauded wildly after each brave effort. But then they also clapped in approval when Weir briefly muffed the words to one of his own songs.

After a long, 40-minute intermission, Weir and his rock band mates were joined by the full orchestra, conducted by Aquilanti, who wrote the score.

This was the true fusion part of the program. It included concerto-like re-imaginings of the Dead standards "Playing in the Band," "Dark Star," "Jackstraw," "Dark Star." Weir, signaling cues with his arms, sang in short, strong bursts as the big sound filled the hall with unusual, but recognizable, renditions of songs so familiar that Deadheads were able to sing along.

Weir is a rhythm guitarist, and the evening cried out for some lacy, Jerry Garcia-like lead solos, the hallmark of the Dead sound.

But while parts of the long concert were somewhat ragged, there were also some stunning, even breathtaking, moments. One of those was a haunting "Days Between," a moving ballad that was the last song written by Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter before Garcia's death in 1995. Weir turned in a beautifully-sung, heartfelt rendition of Hunter's evocative, lyrics, which recall the early days of the Dead, beginning, "There were days/And there were days I know/When all we ever wanted/Was to learn and love and grow."

As an encore, Weir and band tucked into, appropriately enough, a rocking "One More Saturday Night." That was followed by another moving ballad, "Attics of My Life," sung by Weir standing in the middle of a loosely-organized choir that gathered on the front apron of the stage. Despite its casual presentation, the a cappella song was heart stopping, and sent an audience that had been rowdy all night quietly, happily, peacefully home.

World Terrorism Alert Levels by John Cleese

"World Terrorism Alert Levels" by John Cleese

The English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent events in Libya and have therefore raised their security level from "Miffed" to "Peeved." Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to "Irritated" or even "A Bit Cross." The English have not been "A Bit Cross" since the blitz in 1940 when tea supplies nearly ran out. Terrorists have been re-categorized from "Tiresome" to "A Bloody Nuisance." The last time the British issued a "Bloody Nuisance" warning level was in 1588, when threatened by the Spanish Armada.

The Scots have raised their threat level from "Pissed Off" to "Let's get the Bastards." They don't have any other levels. This is the reason they have been used on the front line of the British army for the last 300 years.

The French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from "Run" to "Hide." The only two higher levels in France are "Collaborate" and "Surrender." The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France's white flag factory, effectively paralyzing the country's military capability.

Italy has increased the alert level from "Shout Loudly and Excitedly" to "Elaborate Military Posturing." Two more levels remain: "Ineffective Combat Operations" and "Change Sides."

The Germans have increased their alert state from "Disdainful Arrogance" to "Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs." They also have two higher levels: "Invade a Neighbor" and "Lose."

Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual; the only threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels.

The Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines ready to deploy. These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new Spanish navy can get a really good look at the old Spanish navy.

Australia, meanwhile, has raised its security level from "No worries" to "She'll be alright, Mate." Two more escalation levels remain: "Crikey! I think we'll need to cancel the barbie this weekend!" and "The barbie is canceled." So far no situation has ever warranted use of the final escalation level.

These comments are in response to Hat's posting the Video of the two members speaking in the British Parliament plus the related videos discussing the United States government's involvement in hiring Nazi General Gehlen and many other ex Nazis to work for them in Intelligence and also Rocketry shortly after WWII ended.

The British Parliament Speakers - The first speaker infers that it was the Illuminati who chose Germany to conquer and unify Europe with the intent that once Europe was unified, the Illuminati, through controlling European finance would ultimately gain control of Europe itself.

What is remarkable about the first speaker's comments is that he infers that Hitler is taken by the Illuminati to be a secondary figure, primarily useful because he was best qualified to lead Germany to conquer the rest of Europe. It is assumed that with their financial backing and Hitler's thirst to take over Europe, the likelyhood was very high that Hitler would succeed. Indeed, by the Autumn of 1941, it looked as if everything was on schedule for a complete Nazi victory. It ended up that Hitler found a way for Germany to lose the war, i.e. attacking the Soviet Union, which he underestimated, before first finishing off England.

It is also remarkable that the Illuminati had a back up plan in place, in case Hitler failed and was defeated.

I tend to agree with this scenario of how things were just prior to WWII. However, I have two questions:

Question #1 - The Jews - The Illuminati is made up largely from banking interests and World Banking was and is heavily populated with Jews. By the the time of Kristal Nacht in Germany, in 1938, it was apparent that Hitler was intent on eliminating all Jews from living in Europe. Why would the Illuminati, with many influential Jews in its leadership, take a chance on backing Hitler's Germany as the means to achieve their goal of unifying all of Europe?

Question #2 - Hitler - Had Hitler won WWII, the Illuminati would have to have him eliminated. His power would have been so great that it would have been impossible to control him. He would have to die before their program could be put into place but it would have been nearly impossible to have him assasinated after a German victory in WWII. Longevity did not run in Hitler's family; perhaps they were willing to wait until his death, probably around 1955, before they put their full plan into action.

About Reinhardt Gehlen and his CIA Intelligence Agency - This is a fantastic story, revealing some very compromising information about the US Government.

The Cold War between the USA and the Soviet Union was the driving force of World affairs for the decades immediately after WWII. As the war was winding down, Nazis were etiher "disappearing into the woodwork" or if they had expertise in aeronautics and rocketry or espionage and intelligence, they had high market value in the cold war and could sell their services to the highest bidder between the USA and the Soviets. Some even hired out to both sides and became double agents.

Up to a point, I can see the need for the USA to attempt to get some of the best ex Nazi talent. Had they not made any effort to obtain the services of these men, they would have fallen far behind in the Cold War.

However, it appears as if the US Government was not "ethical" or of sturdy fiber in dealing with these men. They could have dealt from strength and ridden herd over them but instead, they looked the other way and apparently allowed the ex Nazi's to call the shots and play them for suckers.

One top German, of course, was Werner von Braun, who became the head of our space effort. It was apparent that he was not a dyed in the wool Nazi but only worked for the Germans because he was born there and because they paid to finance his rocketry programs. When the Nazis put his work towards a destructive military use, he went along with it but Nazism was not his real calling in life.

Oh well, I have a real interest in this area. It looks like this WWII data is not as stale dated as I had believed. Decisions made before, during and immediately after WWII, are now "coming home to roost" and are affecting our lives adversly some 66 years after the end of the war. It is an amazing story.

Re: The old days - Aboard the Apollo - 1973

A couple of light hearted comments about this thread.

The days of this thread being exclusively about the Apollo in 1973, plus related topics such as the Apollo in 1968 or 1974 were long since put to bed, around October, 2009. Nevertheless, primarily due to "Afaceinthecrowd" and occasionally others, articles concerning the Apollo in 1973 are occasionally posted here. Face's postings here in 2010 and 2011 shed much more light on the Apollo in 1973 than what was originally written on the thread. His extremely rich and extensive posting alone, is sufficient endorsement that it was a correct action for this thread to keep going!

ESMB and everything which it stands for !?

How about an ENMB, an Ex Nazi Message Board. By now, almost all ex Nazis are deceased but maybe around 1995 an ENMB could have been started. I can see two factions arising, just as they arose on ESMB.

One faction would disavow Hitler and say that his entire program was trash. The other faction would also disavow Hitler and rant against him, however, it would think that there was some value in Hitler's program. They would try and cherry pick whatever good there was in Nazism, and put that to use in modern times.

Hitler's clever use of public speaking and his use of propoganda using his PR henchman, Goebbles, could be cited as models for other groups to follow. His economic prowess and how he restored German national pride after an unfair settlement by the allies in WWI could be applauded. They may have acknowledged that he brought the German aeronautics and rocketry industries to life, not to mention the restoration of their Navy and their auto industry, led by the VW.

The two opposing factions of ENMB could then engage in vigorous, sometimes even hateful debate, arguing whether all Nazism must be permanently stamped out or if any good parts of it should be retained and used by a much more benevolent and ethical group of people than the Nazis.

Does this sound familiar? Just asking. BTW, using Nazism as an example is not a very effective analogy. The problem is that there is just not much good or truth in Nazism. When one really looks at it, it was nearly 100% evil with no redeming qualities. Anything which was of value, was superficial, and was not original with the Nazis. The trains running on time is a good example.

I was trying to think of a better example, an unpopular group, which did have actual benefits which could be cherry picked from it. The best that I could come up with was the Confederate States of America in the US Civil war. The CSA is forever toxic because of their insistence on the slavery of Black people. No matter what good there was in their movement, it is overwhelmed by slavery being the major plank in their program.

Nevertheless, the CSA was a much more humane and benevolent group than the Nazis. Both these movements practiced intense racial prejudice but that is about all they had in common other than having loyal armies which would fight hard for their respective causes.

Once you get beyond racism, which is a barrier most people are not willing to look beyond, there was good in the CSA. Certainly State's Rights with a small Federal Government was one of the planks in their program and most of the men who ran the Confederacy were not tyrants. The average soldier fighting for the CSA was usually a good hearted person, very similar to his Yankee opponents. Perhaps some good things could be cherry picked from the CSA. I don't know. The movement never got very far and when it lost its war, it was quickly buried and forgotten, except for some very catchy songs and that Flag of theirs which is so controversial today.

This is the most interesting segment of the Genes, Monsters, Giants ...to me.

Joseph Farrell posits that there were survivors of a cosmic war who are still here. They are the shadow govt and the banksters. The Nazi regime paralleled their governing style. It gets interesting around 4:30 of video #6!! AND I SWEAR TO GOD, HE IS DESCRIBING DAVID MISCAVIGE AND HIS RULING STYLE, THE C OF S, THE GREED, AND THE CHURCH OR SPIRITUAL TECHNOLOGY. TOO UNCANNY WITH SIMILARITIES. THE RULING ELITE TRYING TO PUT BACK TOGETHER A NEW CIVILIZATION IN THE BACKGROUND HIDDEN FROM THIS ONE, AND ITS LEANING TOWARDS A UFO CULT.

url

url

The author Jospeh Farrell talks about the fanatacism of religion and how the dumbing down of the members' ability to think for themselves is profound. Slave labor. He talks about how the Biblical stories of the Old Testament are actually revamps from over 9000 yrs earlier. Same exact story over and over again from Abraham, the lineages etc etc. This had been kept from the worshipping public. Looking at the written histories and the technological traces left behind by extraterrestrial civilizations after a cosmic battle of great proportions he shows that religions were probably developed for mind control measures. His premises are cited globally but especially on the Giza plateau. He points out the 'Revelations' was contrived possibly as a an effort to shock the human psyche as were many other contrived happenings. He does not seem to use any Scientological references at all in any of his lectures or interviews. (the corrollaries are posed by myself) Joseph Farrell's forte is looking for 'breakaway civilizations' who are into their own agendas and secretly running things behing the scenes. Civilizations that have been around for eons in the background while orchestrating the 'human project'. A group or groups who were left here after having lost a great cosmic war and are trying to put back together the occult traditions of dominating economics and our minds as might have happened in times of their ancient genetics project. Sounds like a Nazi themed secret society went underground.
