Re: The old days - Aboard the Apollo - 1973

I was never a big reader, but I looked it up. Yelch.
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juliette_(novel)

Absolute power corrupts absolutely as does the opium of the peeps. I have a distaste for it. I have found this attitude hiding in my shadows. Yet, to have none, means you cannot fight 'back' ....which leaves you, in the end, in the OTHER guy's universe. Maybe this self-hatred and sado masochism is an attempt to swirl the guises so losing is winning and vice versa.

Power is an interesting subject. Today, all over the news, the tube, in the doctor's offices...the chant is GIVE ME MORE TESTOSTERONE. And the latest current drama is LET US SHOW YOU INFIDELS HOW POWERLESS YOU ARE. I think it all comes from having experienced iniquity and not being able to digest it. The POTUS is acting out as was Hitler, both bristling against a despairing history where they couldn't change who is winner. Power is a solution to not having any.. So is imposing one's Will on those who don't want it.

I did start on Moll Flanders last week. Robin Wright Penn was exceptional in the film. Published 1722.

Today we don't know what power is; its invisible. Opium calms the masses, takes away the pain. Rather than fight why not slip through a crack; maybe I am lazy but I don't like fighting if I can quietly slip past a commotion..... Whoever is creative has lots of power just is not always a conduit. Not all power is power over others. Creativity is a way of making a world. A universe. Animals have a power to be unaware of death and weakness being free of a social mind, unaware of their limits to love and activity. Tap into that innocence and freedom.....creativity is like that too. I would much rather know those in charge than know the potus. :) lol. Do you like Moll?

Intensity often does seem to get its way.....the decadent man can't do much in the face of it, hence ideologues pop up and dominate.

Quite a few memes coming up here. I'll comment on a few of them and, as usual, stir the pot and ruffle a few feathers.

Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. If one accepts the basic Scio/Hubbardite/Hermetic view of creation and all that is (and I do) then it is certainly an oddity that we, who are inherently omnipotent gods, can be "corrupted" by our own inherent nature. Why would this be? Well I don'y have any complete answer to this question but one can consider that since all aberrations are observably abilities of the being which are being asserted too heavily or restrained too heavily, the it seems to follow that the most basic condition of all (OTness, for want of a better word) would also be the most aberrative when it goes wrong. I think at basic too it is because people tend to think of power in terms of a powerful ego, and they invariably seek power for their own ego - this is certainly what the CofS was promising - and with a falsehood like that entered into the computation disaster is sure to follow.

The other meme is the Nazis. I find it interesting that the two peoples on earth - or at least the two peoples in causative games roles on earth - the Teutons (broadly speaking) and the Jewish people - both claim to be "herrenvolk", or phrased differently: the "chosen people of God". I have mentioned elsewhere the probable connection between the Teutons and the Titans. The Titans in Greek mythology were Gad/Man hybrids. They crop up in other mythologies under different names.

Now please understand that I am not taking sides with either of them - I'm done with that sort of identifying myself with noble causes and whatnot. But it is to be noted that each of these "herrenvolk" have each in their own way had an enormous influence on the way the world as a 4th dynamic has evolved. One went into forming the "Royal" or "Noble" houses and family blood-lines of Europe, and the other - which is still equally obsessed with its blood-line - went into banking and exerting control over the energy lines of this 4th dynamic. And each tried desperately to infiltrate the other and each tried desperately (hold your breath Lakey) to exterminate the other.

This is a game that has been played over many thousands of years. It is certainly not a phenomenon of the 20th century. It is a game that has been played over many thousands of years on this planet and on others before this one.

What we see in recent times (history of European peoples time) is no more than a blip on the radar of what is going on here. This too needs be recognised.

I hope it is ok for me to jump in. I taught the Greeks and their gods. Those myths have more reality than Scn. It would be more plausible to believe that gods are still around than to believe men are themselves gods per the Scn construct. As that Greek saying goes about entertaining strangers lest one turn away a god, it could be more true than not. I wonder if gods would split their sides laughing at the notion of human thinking themselves gods. But maybe in private since nowadays gods are less ostentatious, like celebrities wearing shades. Ok so maybe they have yachts.

I did not like the either or logic you used (of those two peoples/archetypes/masks in battle, the cosmic struggle you present). It seems unfair and cartoon-like to characterize either so broadly that way.

Only two days ago I mentioned the titan Pallas in context of palladium.....the god of warcraft. Perhaps it is simply that Europe has, like Troy, lost its beloved palladium.

Re: The old days - Aboard the Apollo - 1973

On this day, so please forgive my audacity in writing the below, Lakey's Apollo thread will reach 2 Million views, a great milestone.

Of gods and Narrenschiffs, thus, all things Apollo
(a Festschrift on the occasion of 2 million views
)
To mark this commemorative or festive occasion, I have chosen to consider the god Apollo from whom the term Apollo arises. Since I am a Nietzsche reader, I'll just say up front that Nietzsche found Apollo's qualities to be mostly associated with the mind and rationality. Not the heart, not wine.....Apollo represents, in Nietzsche's mind, light, brightness and radiance, logic, rationality, organization, universals. Nietzsche opposed to this sort of 'clarity' Apollo represents, opposed the god Apollo with the god Dionysus, Apollo's brother and a god of love, wine and song whose activities were carried on with less precision, often in obscurity and animal innocence and also animal brutality. Yet, Apollo was certainly the god of music too....poetry, dance, and prophecy. But I imagine Dionysus would be listening to the Byrds and Apollo would be listening to Mozart if we were to interrupt them today for an interview on this thread anniversary.......

Both of these tendencies, dionysian and the appollonion, spring from the same fountain, the same family. Maybe they are two sides of the same coin, each cannot live without the other. In Scientology terms, Apollo would be the clear, Dionysus would be found in ethics or most likely not found, having escaped from ethics through a small window never before used for such a purpose. He's the incorrigible brother.

I guess a way of understanding the difference of Apollo to his brother is to consider that Apollo is an oracular god, a god of prophecy. Prophecy has to do with the future, and with order and time and with truth in a more universal sense. Apollo is forward wishing and his actions are more calculating; they are not all for the moment, now, today....let us eat and drink as in the case of Dionysus. For Dionysus, experience, existence itself is the only 'sense' we have. Universals are out of place....

These two forces balance each other, repudiate each other, and seem inescapable one from the other. We can see these two as forces at play in the modern world. Always in some sort of balance or imbalance. But what is interesting is that we don't often see so many statues dedicated to Dionysus, I mean monuments; except perhaps in poetry and literature and in film. The video Hats posted of Weimar Germany seems a strong mix of both the Dionysian and the Appolinian. We have a moon landing named for Apollo, and, Hubbard's ship the Apollo....and the Apollo theater....lots of monuments to that name. Monuments to the bacchanal are found in the arts, not the sciences.

Why is it I often wondered, that gods seem to represent powers? In Plato, each God is a form, it is the essence of some eternal form or quality. Such that Aphrodite is Love. Love actually walking around. And Apollo is Light or Rationality. Etc.

Taken in just the sense of forces of nature, the Greeks conceived the gods each to embody some force, a reality. The gods were specialized, not OTs the way Scientologists think of them but each focused on some power or gift to which he or she was most attuned. Human beings, also leaning to various needs, wants and desires, had the habit of aligning with gods they felt were most sympathic to their projects. And the gods also favored or did not favor some human beings even if most of the time the gods were quite derisive of human beings and believing anything such a god told one was a treacherous business, apt to go either way. The idea of respect was crucial, just as one respects the forces of nature lest one get swept away by a typhoon for not believing weather reports. The gods then were primarily interested in themselves and their own affairs, and then secondarily interested in humans to the extent humans could further those godly affairs. Harsh as it seems, humans in that scheme of things were not the lords of the castle even if they happened to be a human with actual keys to an actual castle.

Because the gods had these qualities, or essences, as their form of being, and because they were pure in each to their essence, it was only natural that gods clashed one with the other all the time. One force, the force of love would obviously conflict with Pallas, the god of warcraft. The goals were not the same. Socrates of course noticed this failing, that the gods had no agreed upon authority as to what was universally good or true. Instead each god championed its own allegiances and affiliations....that is, power was hierarchical and whatever essence was strongest prevailed.

Perhaps this is something like the way this world works, the way that one power prevails over other powers. The weakness or strongness of a power is really only a function of situation in a way.....In one setting, love will win and war would fall flat. In another setting, a different sort of force is needed.

Like the parable or story from Aesop in which the sun and the wind try and see who can get the man's coat off first.

Apollo, then, is the god of our modern age to the extent he epitomizes the force of technology, knowledge, and progress. Dionysus represents the maudit tendencies, as in the poet Rimbaud or the hippy movement. The Dionysian has its place now in the Apollinian world as a sort of release valve. A break from all of that Apollo clarity, the idea there being that life needs days off, a break from being clear sometimes, some animal innocence, some wine. Too much Apollo light can hurt. Too little leads into debauchery.

In the modern age, Apollo represents success, progress, solutions, completion, shedding light on every corner....these tendencies can of course be expressed in the wrong setting and give a bad result. Such as for example, a surveillance state or greed to the exclusion of more humanitarian feelings towards one's fellows.

Thus in the natural world, no one force has complete dominion. What we see, I think, is a combination of forces that interact. There is light and dark and there is hot and cold and there is reason which cares not for feelings and there is love which puts emotions in a privileged place. Often one force is marshalled to the use of another, for example, Mars god of war and Pallas are united under Apollo to colonize some unruly corner of reality, bring it to clarity. Apollo if I am not mistaken is also the god of colonization. How fitting then that the moon landing is named Apollo, the moon representing the desire to expand the human reaches beyond earth, to establish a new frontier.

This tendency of Apollo, to conquer the dark and colonize via the rational consciousness, was hated by the literary crowd in the Romantic period, which favored 'the unconscious' over clarity on a conceptual basis, in poetry, in fiction, and in life. Thus Dionysus was held up, as a god of the unconscious one could say. Apollo represented for them all that was calculating, controlling and which oppressed mankind. In literary circles, in the 60s, the banner of much of the anti-establishment was anti-Apollinian, essays were written by philosophers on such things, all highly metaphoric and in analogy to explain various upheavals. This anti-movement, literary in nature, attacked not just the Apollinion tendency in politics and psychoanalysis via Freud and Marx but also the Dionysian tendency in Freud and Nietzsche. Since the antis had no champion (they were mostly atheists), with no forces (gods) to get behind, those movements continue yet in a faded form. They never were able, so far, to get a unified power together sufficient to override an Apollo. Apollo and his mind of science continues today to be the force which cannot be overruled, that drives the world, although the poets and singers continue to rail against the impersonality of technology (rationality) and the way it has taken over the human sphere. Thus the irrational as poetic gesture becomes a meme of youthful defiance (drugs, art, sex, defiance to authority). Technology, the philosopher Heidegger writes, is acknowledged to be a god, is the god of modernity. In a Der Speigel interview Heidegger hints that perhaps all we can do in such an impasse, as he seems to see it, is await a god to come that might save us [from Apollo]. Of course he does not sound too optimistic in the interview....suggesting it might be hundreds of hundreds of years until such a time arrives.

Well I hope someone enjoyed this allegorical history of Apollo and the forces Apollo represents. Today we see those forces most at work in Silicon Valley and in projects and endeavors in all the branches of the sciences.

Please don't shoot the messenger....this is just a festschrift (a writing of honor or festivity) in honor of Lakey's thread reaching 2 million later today. I do realize that his thread began talking about the Apollo ship not the archaic Greek mythology. But I leave it to him to make any remarks about Apollo the ship since I was not there.

On Farts & Sonic Booms

Sonic Booms, while most frequently, are man made but arrive on most of us unexpectedly and, therefore, can be most startling when they arrive.

On the other hand, even when we expect the arrival of one it can still cause us to jump!

Farts – or as the more high browed prefer – flatulence can be emitted in a variety of ways – and odors.

Somewhere I think I once read that Ben Franklin pondered doing research into foods or additives that would add pleasant scents to flatulence.

There is no doubt most peoples life experience has shown to them that farts can be anywhere from undetectable to paint curling. Even cats & dogs get in very stinky ones. Some even feel cow farts contribute methane in levels that have a detrimental bearing on our global atmosphere – or is that some vegan oriented rumor ?

One of the greatest fart stories that ever happened I got to witness in a high school science class.

It happened like this : During a quiet time in class a very loud fart was cut in the back center of the class & as heads turned to look back my still lifelong dear friend sitting in the next to last seat turned at looked at the prissy stuck up nose better than thou girl sitting behind him.

He did this in perfect timing with the rest of the class looking back and deftly made it appear she was the source of that sound.

She, to this day, hates his guts. I love him. It was such a masterful blow !

But, as we all know, sometimes when we think we can eek out a silent one then it betrays us and blows the rim off in an explosion of sound. Socially awkward moment of do I try to ignore it or just own it ?

Old people, man farts come when they come & leaning forward in a chair is pretty much a guarantee one is going to be cut. Ever notice how old people just fart away never missing a beat mid-sentence and letting them fly as natural as breathing ? Perhaps no wonder we call ‘em old farts.

An old people, God, their farts are the worst of all farts – even the dog howls & runs. Oh, nobody anymore ever falls for blaming it on the dog.

Kids are pretty good about farts. They’ll just look at you when you do it & say “ I didn’t cut that fart “ from about the time they can talk on.

Teenage boys seem to have the most fun with contests for loudest, longest, worse smell & so on.

Rarely, there is that treasured one who can effectively use farts as a social comment to what was said in a conversation.

Women farting is a quick topic : they don’t. Ask ‘em, they’ll tell you ! Now if you are light sleeper & the lady has been exhausted if you listen carefully & have good hearing you can hear her let a few ease out during the night. But awake ? Nope. Not going to happen unless you been married more than 40 years, then, and only then, might you hear a lady raucously fart.

giz

PS : Note both Farts & Sonic Booms soon pass.

This is but one of many good Margarita recipes.
....for celebrating the 2 million mark.

Pour coarse salt into a small plate. Use a lime half to
moisten the rim of your cocktail (martini) glasses,
then tip them into the salt to encrust the rim.

Mix equal portions of lime juice, 100% agave silver tequila if you can,
and Cointreau in a pitcher. Fill a cocktail shaker half full of ice cubes, add enough
margarita mixture for a couple of drinks (a generous cup), secure the
lid and shake for a full 15 seconds to chill the mixture and properly
dilute it with the melting ice. Strain into the salt-rimmed glass and
enjoy.

Ah, the good ship Apollo.

Best I recollect, it ended up junked into the salvage yard.

If only the nightmares could have ended with it !

Crass me, I'm going for an almost frozen Modello with plenty of lime juice encrusted in salt generously spread on the top of the bottle.

Negra is my preference.

That said, it is already 5 o'clock somewhere !

Note the title of what I wrote...the word narrenschift translates to ship of fools.....

I did not say it there in what I wrote but I was also stabbing at the concept of Clear,
which is very much in line with Apollo's tendencies and style as I described these.
That said, I wasn't attempting to bluster against anything Apollo, more so I wanted to
commemorate the 2 million views.

Apollo

Oh, I'm not much into the people who went ( under false pretenses ) to the good ship Apollo did so as fools but more that they were fooled.

The real crew of the Apollo, the ones who were the movers & shakers that really made things happen ?
Not the hangers on or fringe element of pretending to be important but that cadre that made it happen, those guys.

I'd say - in retrospect - highly delusional but deeply believing followers of Hubbard who thought they were about to save the world.

It all came a cropper.

Yet, even as late as today some are still going to try to salvage some vestige of rightness of their belief. They find some piece of that dead past to drag forward, proudly hold high, & assert " This works " .

( Nevermind it only works in the most highly of subjective circumstances - and damned rarely at that ! )

For some the ' That works ' means ( gasp ) the truth has been discovered !

And, I got to leave it at
" Well, good for you " !
. . . and walk away knowing that refrain of
" Scientology works ! I was right " !
is going to played for years to come.

So. to me, it isn't that there were fools way back then that in the years leading up to now so much has come to light about Hubbard & his quackery that some - even in the face of known truth - can still carry that banner of scientology & proudly wave it high.

And not to take away from the value of this Apollo thread.

Some people who were there, actually knew the old man, spent time with old man & his family, saw much of scientology get developed & unfold have been so kind as to share their own honest insights here.

They gave us the truth that, in my - unasked for - opinion has given this thread some worthwhile value.

The more views the merrier !

Well as Nietzsche would say, although these are not his exact words, the blazing light of truth is blinding....and the ideological blind....being so sure of themselves...yet unable to see anymore for themselves....and it being impossible to get that light out of their eyes....assert the damnedest things...without being able to see how awkward they look standing there with that banner. Perhaps a good set of box seats in the theatre would be best...and I speak only for myself since perhaps others have the desire to save the blind from their fate.....to watch the show "the blind leading the blind"....have a laugh...and to neglect to interfere in the games. As I said in an earlier post about the three types of philosophers, being the third kind, the individualist, I can only stand by and let each find whatever path they may.....laissez-faire.

I tend to run from words like 'solution' or 'that works....', these feeling mechanized and cold and lacking emotional color. That playout of progress feels so tiring and pointless in a way....this is why we love animals. They have much simpler views of things....they enjoy things without being able to be neurotic....without knowing what "that works" means..... they do what they do and they are true to their natures without the constant need to become something other than they are....which is what humans always try for. So Nietzsche's philosophy would be to find out what you are and then push THAT to its limit. No tech really works for that then, since each person is an entirely different ball of wax and must find out what they are on their own. What one pushes to the limit is one's own essence....only you can know you the way to do that....no tech can do that for you.... But as to finding out what they are, often people lie to themselves about what that is...for various reasons. So as to whether people can find out who they are....Nietzsche says for people to try. If they can. A lie one tells oneself can be so strong as to be invisible to thought. I still don't now what I am but I find out a bit more each day. Usually by accident. :coolwink:

I'll add a little more to your knowledge of what you are. In Yiddish, you are a Shiksa and that means a non Jewish woman. In your case, I would add a few descriptives, you are a well educated, smart and honest Shiksa who can write pretty well and paint pretty well:wink2:. A non Jewish man is called a shaygetz.
