Re: The old days - Aboard the Apollo - 1973

Well I was on staff and it was pretty much a beater...but the memories were swell of riding around in Miami in a Karmann Ghia. So now my heart breaks. I learn it's just a volkswagen. Sigh.

Just a volkswagon?

The premier brand in europe. According to me and |Jeremy Clarkson.

:heartflower:

In the 90s I tried a newer VW style which had a new kind of half stick and half automatic.

I liked the car but the transmission left me cold. VW is awesome...just hope that
they don't jettison manual transmission before a I can afford a new one.

Even the pricey cars aren't necesarily attractive though. I saw one of these recently (the top of the range Lamborghini), and IMO it's more brutal looking than pretty;

And as for this car; it's probably lovely inside and great to drive, but what were they thinking when they designed the front of it?

Yeah those and many others are pretty hideous, for sure. But there are some nice Jaguars and Aston Martins and Maseratis and Mercedes. In American cars I have a perverse pleasure in the lines of the new Challenger. Put me in a weathered bomber jacket by the side of a coastal mountain road standing next to one of them and even at my advanced and broken down age I'd be a charming bastard.

Yeah, those were turds. The Type 4 VWs were also horrible.

That is a Triumph TR 6 1975-77 or 78. I forget what year they brought out the TR7 to replace it. Now THAT car (even though it is gorgeous) was a piece of crap the day it was born. Bad times for Brit cars. If you could find one and replace all the running gear and electrics with that of a 280z you would have the best of both worlds.

A friend had a TR7 and it was a disaster.

TR 7s were UNBELIEVABLE pieces of shit. British cars started going into the toilet in the early 70s and got progressively worse until Ford bought Jaguar and started it's climb back to goodness.

Nice to see this old thread up out of its sickbed and moving around again.
It wasn't dying at all, it was just hungover. :)

Re: The old days - Aboard the Apollo - 1973

I watched Best of Me on Netflix.

Nice movie.

Had a song in it I liked, from when I was in art school (90s)....

Warning: American 90s Alternative.

The girl in the movie tells the boy: You don't know how to flirt do you? LOL. True. He does not.

Other songs in this are nice too.

Yes, more 90s alternative music.

I was forced to be a 90s child even though I wasn't.

So i am a 60s child and a 90s child.
Thanks to Scn. No explanation to be forthcoming.
[This child was not predicted.]

And I won't say if that is good or bad.
Since I like myself now.

Re: The old days - Aboard the Apollo - 1973

Which version did you own? Metal-top or soft-top/cabrio?

I had the pleasure of owning both the convertible & the coupe - both were a light yellow.

When I had the convertible I put a Super 90 engine in it ( EMPI exhaust for VWs fit just fine ) with the Porsche hill climb gearbox (ABAA - if I remember right !).

Worked so well I moved it over the coupe & added the big Porsche drum brakes.

Few other things were : decambered the rear end to minus 2 degress & had limit straps to keep it from going positive.

Some kind of adjustable shocks set the firmest - Koni ? Topped off with using the Meyers Max Dune Buggy modification to lower the front suspension.

I don't remember the rims except they were Porsche off maybe an RS or RSK ?

In any event, perhaps the most fun car I ever had & one hell of a sleeper be it a drag race, road race, or autocross.

As close to loving an inanimate object as I'll ever get !

Liked my KG so much better than my other cars I owned ( more than fleeting long ) -Super 90, Sprite, TR 4, Opel GT ( gag )AH LeMans, AH 3000, XKE or a few other I forgot.

I'll skip 'trailer only' race cars both open wheel & coupes.

And, various Mustangs, Studebaker Presidents & Hawks, Hemi's, VW bugs & many ' Hot Rods ' now forgotten.

I got to own a 289 Cobra but only for re-sale not as my driver & race for some one else a 427 for a few races/
