I want to hear more from Joe, too!

Carmelo, all cleared up about Lehrer being a darn funny songwriter?

Somehow, why do I think klatching has some relationship to kevetching? :whistling:

Might be interesting to look into the etimology of it...

Poor Challenge, your invitation is in the mail!!! Leave those worms to wriggle happily throught the soil in peace! :p

Tom Lehrer

S & L - I believe the word is spelled kvetch in Yiddish which means "to complain". Kvetching is complaining.

I know Tom Lehrer as well. Way back in 1955, I spent the summer working for my aunt and uncle in Miami at their newstand. I was 15 and had an older first cousin, Burt, who was 24 and had graduated from MIT as an engineer and was into Tom Lehrer. He had two records of his songs and played them over and over. I know the lyrics of most of the songs by heart even now. When I got back to California, I bought my own record album of these songs. The ones I remember best were:

"Be prepared, that's the Boy Scouts marching song."
"Nicholai Ivanovich Lobachevsky" a song about plaguerizing based on a real life Russian mathematician.
Something about setting one's sister's hair on fire and dancing around a funeral pyre, singing "Rikity tickity tin".
"Fight fiercely Harvard" It went, "Fight fiercely Harvard, fight, fight, fight, demonstrate your prowess do. For be it they who have the might, nevertheless we have the will. Fight for Havard's glorious name, won't it be 'peachy' if we win the game.......etc.
There were many other of Lehrer's songs on my album.

By the way, down in Miami in 1955, there was Jim Crow being practiced, white only and "colored" only restrooms and drinking fountains, and waiting areas for bus and train service. I rode on the City buses several times and always sat in the back in the black section on purpose. I was 15 hears old and some white guy told me, "Son, you are not allowed to sit there and I shot back to him, "I don't obey stupid laws." and refused to move. I am proud that I did that, its not exactly Rosa Parks but it shows that even then, the Lakester was striking blows against the bad guys.

AWWWW!

next time I'm near Lake _______, I'll phone you, and we can hook up.

For anyone who wants to meet the "Great and Powerful Oz" oops, I mean me. We're going to be at the Whale Fest, Clam Chowder Tasting, and Wine Festival in Mendocino on March 5,6, and 7. We do this every year.

We'll be staying at Aunt Jess's house (a B & B).

Actually, we hope she won't be there. People always seem to end up dying when she's around.

well o crap! I have an appointment with the Tax Man on Mar 8. A Monday. I couldn't get home in time for it.
I do love Mendocino. We have spent many Anniversaries there at the old Mendocino Hotel. An Historical Masterpiece.
Just South on the Coast, at Ft Bragg, there is a beach named Glass Beach which in centuries past was a dumpsite, I've been told. The Ocean has polished all the glass that was on the beach into small brilliant pieces about the size of your fingernails. I have a couple candy dishes full of these. I use them in some of my Succulent dish gardens. The BTs love them.
Up the Coast to the North is Shelter Cove. Hard to get to. Land is cheap. It's where the San Andreas Fault goes into the Pacific Ocean. Some of my family have their boats there.
Then inland from Mendocino is the most beautiful Campground. It at one time was a little port named Usal. It is still Usal, but is a humongous meadow among the ancient redwood trees. You can make camp between the roots of the redwoods. Some roots form rooms like 3 or 4 bedroom homes. There are wildflowers everywhere...Foxglove, Crocosmia, etc etc.
I have family in Mendocino County and many friends there. I do so wish that you and your family and I could all be there at the same time. We can do it next year in March.

Pismo Clam Chowder!!!

Oooh, I LOVE glass beach! Haven't been there for far too long...Love the central coast area in general...I can forsee a reunion gathering camp out next summer...who's up for planning it? :)

Lakey, I apologize for my shicksa spelling...but I was making a joke, about kvetching and klatching...:eyeroll: Too many people have lost too much by their involvement with COS for there not to be at least a little kvetching when any of us get together...but mostly joy at having survived it, I hope! :)

(Always remember, some DIDN'T survive their involvement with COS!)

I think when we have a gathering, we should drink a toast "to absent friends", in remembrance.

Different "Glass Beach" Pismo is in the middle of CA. Mendocino is in the way far up North. Nevertheless, a good idea for a beach party. Let's invite Frankie and Annette.

"Be quiet, eat your shiksa" - a line from Sleeper, a Woody Allen film.

We go to the Whale Fest in Mendocino every year. There is a Wine Tasting ($30 buys you a glass that you schlep around and get refilled all over town) On saturday morning there is a Clam Chowder tasting. Many fine restaurants in the area bring cauldrons of their special clam chowders, that get tasted until they run out. It is mostly locals, in the know, there, but the different chowders are each terrific. The beaches, lighthouse, walks are all relaxing and beautiful. The vistas are marvelous.

Is this line intended as literally as a sexual innuendo?

"I can't talk, I'm eating my shiksa" - a line from some Woody allen film.[/QUOTE]

Is this line intended as a serious sexual innuendo or is there some other less offensive form of humor involved? This line alone would probably make the movie R Rated.

Not so well known as the Yiddish word for a non Jewish woman, "Shiksa" is the companion word for a non Jewish man, "Shaegitz" or Shage for short. My cousin Burt who I visited in Florida when I was a teen ager lives in Palo Alto now and visited Southern California some years ago and went with me to an Aunt's house where a party was taking place where most of the people were Jewish. Burt is tall and thin and has blondish hair and blue eyes. I introduced him to my Aunt when we came in as my first cousin on my Mom's side of the family and my Aunt (on my Dad's side) had never met him and said, "Your first cousin huh, I would have taken him for a Shage."

My Mom and all her relatives had their heritage from Poland on her Father's side and Vilna, Lithuania on her Mother's side. When I was little, we would visit my grandparents on my Mom's side and also have a Passover seder there every year. There was this large contingent of these Aunts and Uncles from Vilna. They all looked like clones. They were all large boned people, a little taller than average and almost all had red hair and deep blue eyes but they had very Jewish type noses, long and hooked sort of like a beak. They referred to themselves as "Litvaks". I just looked it up on Google and it means Lithuanian Jews and Jews from what is now Belarus.

My Dad's family came from Russian Jews from the Ukraine around the capital of Kiev and the Black Sea port of Odessa. Both branches of the family must have heavily inter married with the non Jews of their areas because it is not real obvious to most people that I am of Jewish blood. Thank God, I do not have a Jewish nose! I am usually taken for Italian or Greek or from Lebanon.

This old Jewish man, Leonid, whom I met at the train station in Breclaw, Czech Republic, last July when taking the train from Berlin to Vienna, however, spotted me as being Jewish from a cursory look from about 50' away. I was having trouble making my connection to Vienna and no one spoke any thing but Czech there and he was watching me go crazy and he spoke English and came over and helped me. He told me point blank, "You are Jewish aren't you?" I said,, "Oh my God, how did you know, everybody thinks I am Italian or Greek." Leonid said to me, I saw you from nearly 100 feet away, trying to get those Czechs to understand you and I turned to my wife and said, see that guy over there, I am sure he is Jewish. I said, what feature is it that enabled you to spot me. He said to me, I am a Jew, I was born in Russia in the early 1930's in a Jewish ghetto and lived amongst Russian Jews my whole youth, there is no feature of yours that tipped me off, I know a Jew when I see one, I can spot one from a block away. I said, I quit going to temple and practicing the religion when I was 21. He said that does not matter at all, a Jew is a Jew and I can spot one a mile away. I thought that was absolutely amazing!!

I googled, just now. the exact quote is "Be quiet, and eat your shiksa." It is from Sleeper.

It's a joke, no more R rated than the news about Bill Clinton and Monica or any of dozens of US Senators and Congressmen.

I saw the movie Sleeper, I remember two funny things, Woody was hooked up to a machine with his beautiful Shiksa co-star I believe and they were transfering brain waves or somesuch and Woody said something like, I hope nothing goes wrong because, "I don't want to damage my brain, it is my Second favorite organ!"

The other funny thing is that a Volkswagen bug was parked in a cave for 1,000 years, sitting idlly and still had gas in it and Woody and his Shiksa needed to make a quick getaway or something and got in and turned the key and the VW started right up. This was before Japanese cars took over the market and the VW bug was generally acclaimed as the most reliable car on the market.

Well yes, Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky, there was an instance of a Jewish girl havng her Shaegitz. That did cause quite a stir with Republicans but the Dems took it quite in stride. Since I live in Orange County, everyone knows how I felt about it. Also very good point about those U.S. Senators and Congressman and their notorious affairs, often not wwith Shiksas, Shaegitzes, or Jews but with male Congressman or Senators with young male white house pages! The U.S. Senate or the ancient Greek Senate nearly 2,500 years earlier, in some ways times don't change!!

He sounds like Paul Newman in Exodus?

Paul Newman is the paradigm of Jewish, of course?

type casting :)

Of course, not.

Newman taken for Jewish, nah, not a chance!

Of course, not.

I remember the old movie Spartacus, staring Kirk Douglas, who is Jewish. I read a couple of books about Kirk Douglas and a couple of books by him, one was called "Dances with the Devil" which was a story about a young woman who survived a Nazi camp in WW II and meets up with an American Jew in New York City later on. It was a very good novel. Kirk Douglas, is from a Russian Jewish family just like me. I do not think he looks Jewish at all. His trademark feature is he chin which has a cleft feature to it which is not at all Jewish looking, he has the blueish eyes and Sandy hair like my cousin Burt.

In Spartacus, Kirk Douglas brought off his role well but this friend of mine, who I saw the movie with, thought one supporting actor, Tony Curtis, was ridiculous in his role because he had a thick New York accent. There was one line in particular where Spartacus was discouraged by the Roman army sending in huge reinforcements and was going to surrender himself so that his army and their families would not be butchered and Tony Curtis gets up and says with his heavy Brooklyn accent, "Spahtikus, Spahticus please don't abandon us, we love you. We love you Spahtikus." My friend, thought Curtis was miscast for the part, not due to any acting deficiency because he was a fine actor and looked the part but simply because he had a thick Brooklyn accent which was not suitable for a character in ancient Greece. Go figure:confused2:

Jews number about 18 million worldwide, equal to about half the population of California. 18 Million out of 6.5 billion. Lets see, 1 percent of the world would be 65 million so they are less than 0.3%, you have plenty of company you Goyim shaegitz.
