I still like the '... how does it make you right, ... how does it make another/others wrong' formulation as I've found it communicates easily to others. People seem to be 'genned in' to thinking in terms of 'right & wrong'. However, I'll give your formulation a try to see if it clarifies things.

"Right/Wrong" is still used . . . though sometimes not necessary, depending on what is being handled.

The rest of the old formula: Dominate/Escape Domination and Survive/Succumb are useful . . . though I find a bracket of my own development to be extremely powerful. (What's new? An occasional little brilliance shining through )

Virginia, my clients and I find this to be a wizard series of questions:

"How does (serfac item/thought/belief/precept) help you attain your wants?"
"How does (serfac item/thought/belief/precept) solve or protect you from unwanteds?" :p:p

AS a famous table salt marketeer once said: See how it runs!

You might be amazed how freeing that bracket on wants is

Oh, by the way, the reason addressing wants is such a power recovery action is the fact that your wants are what underlie your power . . . it is you in pursuit of your wants that is the driving force of your power (or more precisely, you expression of power).

And it is the blunting, dulling or impeding of your wants (or pursuit of them) that gives you the phenomena of blocked power.
:D
:D

I'm ready to switch off for the evening folks . . . so I'll leave you with those little points to ponder, and we'll see what bubbles to the surface by morning :p

I want all would-be gurus and messiahs to shut up ... is this giving me the phenomena of blocked power (cos I haven't noticed).

A lot of really interesting stuff here. Thanks to all, not only Rog but the others who contributed too.

The Serv Fac (note use of "the") is of course the present lifetime button on the Goals chain. It is the beingness side of the postulate - the serv fac is a fixed "beingness" (brng right) which compells the person to 'do' in a fixed, patterned way. The Hav side of the Goal is the postulate that the other person will accept this 'rightness' etc and so not be a threat to survival. [This is a very rough description]

The basic this lifetime Servfac has many many locks connected with it - this is fully described by LRH - and these locks often come up in session, and are not - or should not be - invalidated by the auditor. Probably most preclears are given such a lock ServFac as being the real item (which it is, in its way - it is the item most real to the preclear at that moment) and the grade is left at that.

But there is the real corker underneath it all. I have seen this too often to believe otherwise. And when that biggie is found and indicated the entire this-lifetime case disintegrates in front of your eyes. It is one of the most spectacular things to witness as an auditor, and for the preclear it changes everything. Life changes totally, who they are changes, who other people are (or are perceived to be) changes for them. The tarnsformation is nothing short of miraculous.

I have more than once had the preclear spontaneously blurt it out while I'm still clearing the meaning of the term "Service Fac" - aan action which can stretch to well over an hour on most people - and then the case is so thoroughly blown out that running the brackets becomes a superfluous action.

Oh, and BTW. I myself have never had Grade 4 run on me. Nor 3, nor even 2. So I'm "entitled" to still be ServFaccy. LOL.

Yep, we have our "safe solutions" and "life handling mechanisms" for each of the many areas and subjects we've had problems with that had to be managed/handled and such.

Don't think in terms "one answer to life" . . . . . life is not "one scenario, situation or problem" only. It's a multi-faceted monster

Hell, had Hubbard been smarter he could have come up with "Serfacs by Dynamics!" . . . . now that would have been a money spinner as huge as endless S/Nots and 6 monthly sec checks! :dieslaughing:

But the dunce missed the opportunity . . . and folks missed some potential good and worthwhile gains! :D

And for the record, I still discover "serfacs" --- I use the term you are familiar with; but in reality they are "thoughts, beliefs, precepts, safe solutions" I've adopted over the eons to solve or handle areas of existence I expand into as I continue to advance my case.

And how frequently? Two or three a month.

For the fact is, these old areas of existence and activity I am recovering got long ago locked down and "put to rest" by my/these old wrong answer "solutions" . . . and they need be cleaned off so I can again and now in PT operate correctly and sanely.

Seems a reasonable proposition to me, no?

R

SerFacs By Dynamics was an Expanded Dianetics rundown. It never made sense to me as to why that was not part of Grade 4. Like, how can you say you have found all serfacs if you go from Grade 4 to Exp Dn to find more. It's kind of like the lie of OT-3, no more BTs. You get shuffled over to NOTs only to find out you have more.

If Hubbard wasn't fixated on being THE mighty explorer/scientist/researcher/mankind's greatest friend, he wouldn't have been trapped in looking for the ONE thing necessary to resolve a/the/his/mankind's case.

I totally agree with the above Ted,

in my opinion for eons to come the being called Hubbard will be hunted from galaxy to galaxy for the destruction caused from his inability to withold this drooling black hole craving for admiration that possessed him~

Assumptions

Sooner or later, whether in school or an indoctrination class, you are likely to encounter an instructor who says to the class, "Don't assume anything. Do you know why? Because when you do, you make an ass out of you and me." He turns to write on the board, "ASS-U-ME."

"Clever," so I thought.

I first saw that in boot camp. Putting the statement in the context of a class of new recruits or something similar, it is correct enough. Since that time, I have seen an ignoramus or two put their clever selves on display in an attempt to "make self right and another wrong" by a show of "superior knowledge," the knowledge obtained from one of those earlier instructors. The attempt doesn't work as contexts change--not all assumptions are bad. In fact, assumptions are quite necessary, and they make life a whole lot simpler for a thinking, survival-oriented being. It is in forgetting that one is operating on or has made an assumption when the context has shifted, that's where the difficulties lie.

I awoke yesterday morning--as I assumed I would. And I began operating this body in a sea of assumptions, automaticities, postulates, and considerations. This gave me a feeling of predictability--HAVINGNESS!

I worked my way through this HAVINGNESS to my truck. I assumed it would be where I parked it--and it was there. Getting in, I inserted the key, and gave it a crank. Assuming the engine would start I would be on my way in just a few seconds. And, I was! HAVINGNESS!

Putting my favorite CD in the player--thank you Hats--I am giving it a listen. HAVINGNESS!

All these life actions, large and small, are coincident with many assumptions. What could go wrong with that?

How fast can a being change gears, considerations, postulates, plans? Does the being change these things or does the being assert an old assumption, postulate, consideration, etc. against a context that has changed so that the old consideration no longer applies?

A while back my youngest daughter and I took off in her Honda Accord for a run at the lake. The Honda is a beautiful little machine; it runs with smoothness and precision like a fine Swiss watch. We gave no thought about whether it would take us to the lake. The car was but 2 years in use, purchased new. After our run we got into the Honda, she turned the key, and the car was completely dead. No lights, no action, no crank, nothing.

We could have asserted the assumption that there ~should be~ nothing wrong with the car, and continued to twist the key looking for the expected, assumed outcome. And, when the key did not work, we could have, as I have done in my more aberrated past, cursed the car, Honda, the Japanese, the Florida heat, life in general, etc. None of that would have started the car or got us a ride home.

We located a park ranger. He provided a jumper cable. The car started. The next day the Honda dealer said, "Bad battery, no charge for replacement." Everything back to normal. Old assumption working again: turn key, car starts. Nothing to think about in that regard.

Leave house by 8:00 a.m., make it to work on time. There's an assumption that's frequently under attack. Damn traffic.

As Hubbard wrote, "That which is not confronted and inspected tends to persist."

Ted, extremely interesting post! It is very simple on the surface but there is some meat within it which I am sure belies that simplicity. Your last sentences is helpful, knowing that you will follow with more on service facs.

An interesting example of an assumption we all make came to mind. This relates to a little drill which Peter Gilham had a group of students do when I went to a class he gave on salesmanship in 1978.

We were all asked to sit in our chairs and obey a simple command which Peter was about to give us. He then said, "Stand Up!" What seems to happen is that we postulate the space above us before we stand up into it. Each of us definitely had a very short communication lag, before executing the command.

We all assumed there was space above our heads to stand up into without bumping our head but nobody had actually surveyed the upper portion of the room for obstacles such as hanging lights and the like. We had one thing to think about before we stood up and that was whether there was something we might bang our head into. The other thing was that each of us postulated the space was there before we stood up into it.

Its a fun drill. Just do it and you should actually be able to feel yourself creating the space above your head to stand up into.

Wow, I didn't expect something would drag me into this pile of still-cultist mess of a thread, but I can't let this bullshit stand.

See, I grew up in a time and a location where it was still standard drill for all the school children to stand up when a teacher enters the room. For my 1st 5 or 6 years in school, stand up is what I and my classmates did several times a day. There indeed was a delay, something that you in your deluded cult speak might call a "comm lag" or whatever, and I can tell from years of personal experience, that it had nothing to do with any postulates of any kind. Absolutely nothing. Niente. Nada.

So how about throwing some reality into the mix, huh? Shove your postulates to where the sun doesn't shine and look at what's really there.

Have you ever done any Tai Chi? I found it to be a wonderful way of opening up one's awareness of this ability to postulate the space just ahead of one and then allowing "reality" to just flow into it. Try it, if you haven't done so before.

Oh, and disregard Mr Nobody.

Thanks Leon, funny that you ask about Tai Chi. I had never done any of it but Candy enjoys it and was trying to find a good Master in her area. She noticed a class on it was being given at my complex and so we both attended that class, taught by an older Korean gentleman who was very fit for his age.
Yes, I would be interested in taking more classes.

As for Mr. Nobody, his name seems to be aptly chosen. I won't say anymore than that.
