Der Bingle had a little clambake, now called "The AT&T" on some golf courses, now owned by Arnie and Clint, and some others. Doris has a little "pet friendly' hotel in the same city..... somewhere near CarmeloOrchards!

If you look at each and everyone of these gods, disguised as humans, you'll see appreciation, granting of beingness, and the rooting on of the other to do well in song and lines. There is no, "I'll be better than you" "I'll make you less." It is a mutual admiration society. That is the core of the Apollo thread also. We do it.

How about the Apollo thread? We have giants here as well. I would like to name some of them but then some people might have their feelings hurt if I don't mention them. Nevertheless, I will single out Carmelo Orchards. His ideas have led to the growth of this forum and he is doing the same thing now as he did in Nov. of 2009 by suggesting we here on the Apollo thread recapture the spirit of those special days of the early 1970's at CCLA, ASHO, AOLO, FCDC, many other orgs and many of the large Missions such as the Riverside Mission, Phil Spickler's Missions, Martin Samuels Missions, Alan Walter's Missions, etc.

This thread is capable of floating a lot of boats. I am not sure who is reading us but we are sure being read. Lately, we are averaging about 2,000 views a day. I also want to single out one other person who is "Face". Despite having severe medical problems, he has written brilliantly and in an extremely droll and entertaining manner and has supplied answers to so many of the mysteries which many of us thought we would never get answered :thumbsup:.

maybe you noticed i punched in a congrats when you were on the threshhold of half a million views

but...

as i usually only get an hour a day on the computer in the library i stay down in the trenches with the troops mostly

but i always have had a sense of you as a sympatico being and there was an interesting bit of synchronicity recently. i don't know if you noticed but markus used your essay on dresden to start a thread. as it happened i was just then reading "a torch to the enemy" by martin caidin about the sustained firebombing of japan from mid-february to VJ day. in a much as you seem to be a standup guy about being a piece of our national conscience you might want to get hold of it if you can. dresden is pretty well especially by reason of vonnegut's "slaughterhouse five" - hey! there's a great name for a jazz quintet - but it was dwarfed by what the B-29's did. in fact, goebbels used dresden for propaganda and it was only after the fall of the berlin wall modern researchers discovered the death toll was probably under 40,000. (oh, uhh... yeah that was atrocious but dresden was a legitimate military target nor was there any strafing) but the first raid on Tokyo toasted about 130,000 japanese and then it went on for months against 60 different cities. tends to be overlooked especially as it was overshadowed by hiroshima and nagasaki

but no better place to spend xmas than lakey's thread

Glad to hear that Markus started a thread on the Dresden bombing. I did not know about that. I will go and check it out!

Germany was finished in mid February of 1945 and Dresden was not a military center. It had not been hit during the war and as a result, the population rose from 600,000 to 1, 400,000 as Germans and others were retreating from German occupied lands in the East as the USSR was pressing on towards the center of Germany. Dresden did not manufacture armaments and it lied undefended in the closing days of the war. I find it unconscionable that the British wanted to bomb the city with incendiaries and the USA went along with this evil scheme. To me, this is a huge war crime, comparable to acts which the Nazi's performed on others. We won and thus no justice was brought to bear against us or the British to punish this evil act. According to live witnesses who were friends of my brother, Clarence Rockaway, civilians were straffed repeatedly by the American fighter plans during the daylight raids.

I feel very attached to Dresden; it was a center for music, math and all of the arts. Many great Germans flourished there. Germany was completely finished after the Battle of the Bulge in 1945. Dresden went up in one huge city wide firestorm. All those underground suffocated due to lack of oxygen. No one in the center city could have survived the 3 attacks. Whether 40,000 were killed or 125,000, I still consider it a huge war crime.

Thanks for your kind words Commander! It's not my thread, not since Nov. 17th, 2009. All I did was start it, then team up with Carmelo on that date and go along for the ride. This isn't just a platitude. I am sensitive about accepting ownership for things and it's really not my thread! My stories about my stints on the Apollo and at CCLA are mine. They take up about 20 pages of the 1,350 pages or so of the thread. The other 1,330 pages belong to Carmelo, me and dozens of others.

Right now, I am basking in Carmelo's brilliance and want to really enjoy and soak up his concept of creating high spirits on this thread by emulating the spirits of the great entertainers and "Giants" from the mid part of the 20th century.

Many of us posting on this thread have routinely given encouragement and support to one another. Carmelo was not alone in this but he has always been one of the key figures in doing this. He is the first person to formally state that this is what we do on the Apollo thread and suggest that by doing this, we can raise all boats.

HAVE YOU EVER NOTICED THAT THIS THREAD DOESN'T LEND ITSELF TO NAYSAYERS AND BASHERS? Oh, they show up and do a little bashing but then they quickly leave, usually never to appear again. Just think about it, 536,000 views on a forum the size of ESMB! No attracting of hatemongers but instead attracting informative and entertaining posters. Having an enormous group of unregistered ESMB "guests" reading us at a rate of nearly 2,000 a day in recent weeks.

Encouraging others who post here, raising the level of discourse by showing videos of giants of the past. These things, when done with intelligence and sincerity, can float a lot of boats.

Read a book on the japanese fire bombing. Killed far more people than the atomic bombs. Little known piece of history.

yes lakey, dresden is widely regarded among us as a horrible and egregious atrocity and war crime. but it was a legitimate target, more for tactical reasons than strategic as it was directly to the fore of the center group of the red army. but the impetus was probably more punitive than military. i forget the name of the british air marshal but he was reputed to be a grand slam redoubled in the suit of bastards, utter sangfroid, a guy on our side solely by reason of geography who would been no different had he been born in dortmund and served under goering. what the hell. i suppose the biggest reason i have a great love of history is that it's not current events.
