Where is this all going to end? Dodge ball is outllawed for being too dangerous, then winners and losers are eliminated from team sports games in the schools because the losers have their "self esteem" hurt. Good teams are reprimanded for runing up the score against a weak team.

Another topic not quite so idiotic but which I still feel is stupid is the naming of sports teams with Indian names and now Ethnic names. Stanford caved in readily changing its team name from the Indians to the Cardinals ages ago. The most incredible of these is the pressure being brought to bear against Notre Dame University in Indiana to change the team name for all their teams away from the "Fighting Irish" which has served them well for over a 100 years. Univ. of Illinois had pressure put against them to drop the team name, "Illini, often also called the "fighting Illini". The Illini was or is a tribe of Indians who were settled in what became the state of Illinois. In the articles I read, I believe that the university flatly refused to make the change. Another team which flatly refused to change was the professional baseball team, the Cleveland Indians. They even insist on keeping the cartoon like Indian face of an Indian, Chocktaw Sam, or something like that on their paraphernalia. More power to them.

In my humble view, teams such as the Braves, the Indians, the Fighting Illini, the Warriors, the Commanches, etc. are all HONORING Indians by naming their teams after them. The want their teams to be brave and committed to their cause and skilled in battle in their sports skirmishes and furthermore, their cause was noble. There is no attempt to belittle the Indian tribes; instead they are actually being honored! Nevertheless, I have heard many Indians speak out against the practice and I respect the opinions of these Indians.

Dennis Prager the radio talk show host, has brought up this issue a few times on his program. Dennis, a proud Jew, claims he would be honored and probably become a fan if a sports team was named after Jews. The trouble with setting up parallels with Jews is interesting. What would you call the teams? The "Rabbis" is one choice and it is terrible. Israel has a crackerjack military force, how about a name to reflect their fighting skills. Go Haganahs! No that also sounds stupid. The Koshers, The Matzahs, the Matzahballs, they all sound stupid.

The University of Alabama has the "Crimson Tide" and in Mississippi, there is "Ole Miss". For a sports team named for the Jews, maybe their could be the "Parting Sea" of The "Old kishkes" Everything sounds bad, the least stupid one I could think of has to do with the Jewish strong man, Sampson. How about the St. Louis Samsonites? Yea, that one doesn't sound to bad but it will never sell in St. Louis!

I think you're missing the point.

The beach, just like football and baseball games, is [I]an attractive nuisance[/I].

Property that is inherently dangerous and particularly enticing to children. For example a swimming pool has a strong attraction to children and could lead to a liability judgment against the pool’s owner. The owner must take all necessary steps to prevent accidents, such as building an adequate fence around the pool.


It seems to me that people will drive hundreds of miles to go to the beach.

The beach is the problem.

The football and basketball and baseball teams are attractive nuisances too.

I say we just build fences around places like beaches and sports arenas.

Like they say, sort of, about guns, "when beaches and sports are outlawed, only outlaws will have fun."

THE BIG PROBLEM
Harry Reed, the Democratic Senate majority leader has refused to put this proposal up for vote in the Senate!!! He knows the Senate would pass it by a huge margin and HE does not want that to happen. The radio commentator asked what his motivation is for not doing this. The Congressman said that he did not know for sure but that his best guess, the thing that made the most sense, was that the Labor Unions are putting pressure on him to not allow the vote. Reed is a labor union advocate and does not believe in pay raises being earned through merit but believes only that length of service should govern those pay raises so that they must be given automatically. I find this both frightening and unbelievable that Reed has that much power.

I am trying to figure out which Democratic leader is crazier, Harry Reid or Nancy Pelosi. Also, Vice President Joe Biden is not exactly spot on.

Joe Biden, however, is a likeable guy, kind of bufoon in a way but seems like a nice enough person. He lost his family in a terrible car accident years ago and rebuilt his life again with a new wife and he fathered a new group of children who seem to be doing well. That part of his life is something he must be admired for. Even so, I just can't believe how foolish some of the things are which Biden spits out when interviewed. Some of the things he says are incredibly inappropriate!!

Reed and Pelosi, however, have no redeeming character traits or talents, skills or abilities that I can see. They are both "bat shit" crazy. To me, Pelosi doesn't appear to be fit to live in society on her own. Seriously, I see her as someone who should be living in a sanitarium under medical supervision. How this woman can be the Senate leader for the Democratic pary is simply beyond rationality.

I thought that Reed was not quite as crazy but it's starting to dawn on me that perhaps he and Pelosi are equally messed up.

Going even beyond that is the former Senator, John Edwards, who was Kerry's running mate in 2004 and then battled Obama and Hillary for the Dem presidential nomination in 2008. It was easy to see that Edwards was a total and complete phoney, championing the causes of the labor unions and being a friend to the poor while, all the while he was scaming the legal and political system to make big money, not to mention cheating on his wife and fathering children out of wedlock.

Howard Dean is another nutty person who rose to a high rank in the Democrat party but for some reason, the party demoted him and he is no longer in the limelight.

Saving the last for the best, I would like to mention Al Gore. I could see back in 2000 when he ran against Bush that he was messed up. He looked very wooden and was probably taking a lot of psychiatric medications as well. I would bet that Pelosi is also taking heavy psychiatric meds Daily. As far as Reed goes, he might be taking something but probably not as much as Pelosi or Gore.

While I do not believe that Reed or Pelosi have any special abilities to lead and are among the worst possible choices available to hold their leadership posts, I do feel that Al Gore does have some intrinsic leadership abilities. The problem with him seems to be that he is not comfortable in his own skin, so to speak. He is stiff and awkward being himself so he has to take on different identities to appear to be more natural. He has discomfort being those identities as well so he medicates in an effor to make himself look looser and more natural being something he is not. The result is not very convincing, he still looks stilted and wooden.

He is on a tredmill, juggling his different identities with his different medical drugs. That is the way I see it and this is only my opinion as are my comments about all the others mentioned except perhaps Edwards, where there are facts available to back up the opinions.

Gore really took a hit losing the 2000 election to Bush by a tiny tiny whisker. There is no doubt that if Ralph Nader had not run, Gore would have won; also Bush's margin of victory was so slim that perhaps Gore did win by a handful of votes rather than lose by a handful. That presidential race was in reality a tie. Not becoming president when he wanted it so badly and came so close really impacted him hard. Who would blame him for being emotionally scarred by that and for being damaged psychologically?

Those are much better than what I came up with. The Killer Kibutzniks could be the name of a chess team and the Screaming Sabras could be a basketball or football team.

Just think of it, The Kansas City Killer Kibutzniks or the Saint Petersburg Screaming Sabras. Do you think that Jews would object? I doubt it.

What about going after Japanese names for sports teams. The Kalamazoo Kamikazes, it rolls off the tongue but I don't think it would be politically correct.

What about if I made it the St Louis Sampsonites instead of Samsonites? That would correct the luggage comparison wouldn't it.

The Boston Blintzes could be a good team name or the Yakima Yarmulkes? Those are a little better.

The Board of Supervisors this week agreed to raise fines to up to $1,000 for anyone who throws a football or a Frisbee on any beach in Los Angeles County.

The updated rules now prohibit “any person to cast, toss, throw, kick or roll” any object other than a beach ball or volleyball “upon or over any beach” between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

Exceptions allow for ball-throwing in predesignated areas, when a person obtains a permit, or playing water polo “in or over the Pacific Ocean”.

However, during the winter off-season, the new rules will be relaxed.

Officials warned that any activities that could potentially harm “any person or property on or near the beach” should not be allowed during the peak summer season.

Your kids could also end up costing you big bucks: the ordinance also prohibits digging any hole deeper than 18 inches into the sand except where permission is granted for film and TV production services only.

And while you're sitting there, we'll just give you a little vaccine here so that you won't get the flu and we'll also give you a few drugs so that you won't get nervous about all the restrictions we've put on you and your having to sit still all the time. It will calm your nerves and the idleness won't bother you. :angry:

I used to go to the beach to feel free and have fun.....guess I can't do that anymore. What a shame.

Thanks for those two gems! That first one is really sort of an anomaly, a Hawaiian version of a cowboy song. Cowboys drive cattle across vast expanses, usually in desert type of country. Hawaiian's are usually found on small very lush island environments. You wouldn't think there would be Hawaiian versions of cowboy songs and yet this singer and his little group bring it off very nicely. That guy is sure a great yoddler!

Speaking of mixing cultures, what about yoddling. As far as I know, it startedd in the Alps in Switzerland but later was taken up by American cowboys and also the Grand Ole Opry type of Western music.

Oh what it was like back in the mid to late 1800's out on the open trial, driving those doggies to Idaho, sleeping out under the open sky, having coffee and breakfast around the old Chuck Wagon early every morning. No electronics, not much as far as political debates, not many laws or restraints to restrict and control us. Every spring, we would gather those doggies, load up our chuck wagon, brand the dooggies and do something to their tails to shorten them. Unfortunately, that life came to a quick end for me, taking an arrow from a renegade Indian when I was in my early twenties.

This isn't a bad dream, its really happening and the pace is being stepped up. Currently the custodian of this is President Obama although I am sure there are others from whom he is taking his marching orders.

All right, I can see no football on the beach for safety reasons, but why not fence in the activity, as Carmelo stated, so that those who enjoy it can still have fun while the public at large is protected from injury. Also, what is with the fine being $1,000, even for a first violation. That is just being cruel. Playing football is not an evil activity and I don't recall of hearing of anyone ever being injured by football playing on the beach in the last 60 years or so, although it must happen occasionally. Why such a sever penalty for a first time offenders? The Welfare state will resort to viscious tactics to suck up money for its redistribution schemes.

On these fines, I find the government to be hypocritical in the extreme. Take smoking for example. All day long the public is battered with anti-smoking propoganda, we are told that smoking is going down but the greedy manufacturers are still conniving new ways to entice new smokers. Meanwhile, the dangers of second hand smoke are extolled. Smoking is painted as one of the most dangerous and criminal activities in society.

Okay, so far this might make sense if smoking and second hand smoke were as bad as the ads say. In fact, if this was the case, the Government has the power to simply outlaw smoking and it would be understandable if they did so. However, they do not outlaw it and probably they never will. Why not?

Taxes, higher taxes and yet higher taxes and penalties against the tobacco companies while someone in society who smokes is stared at as if he were a serial rapist. Give me a break, if smoking is as bad as the ads state, smoking should be made illegal. Rather than making it illegal, instead the government raises the taxes and fines against smoking so they can take in more billions of dollars.

Just so you know, no Cattleman would ever shorten the tails of his calves. Bovine tails serve a very valuable purpose in the health of the animal by reducing the effects of insect swarming, bites and transmitted microbes and the effects from the stress of same.

What you are probably recalling is the castrating of all the male calves that are not outstanding in conformation, have known and superior pedigree, have large testicles and are out of a dam that is known to produce bulls that are highly fertile, possess strong libido and produce superior calves for commercial purposes. These bulls are known as range or bulls.

Some of the range bulls will produce superior females or male calves and are then used in selective breeding programs with cows that are matched for the production of desired traits in the male and female offspring to, over time, upgrade the quality of the herd, either by producing better range bulls or breeding cows. These bulls are known as herd sires.

At least, that's how it was in the old days. Today, due to Artificial Insemination, Embryo Transfer, DNA testing and a few other whistles and bells, the process of herd improvement is much faster and more efficient.

This process was known as "Animal Husbandry" and has evolved into the subject of "Animal Breeding and Genetics".

At least, that's how it was in the old days. Today, due to Artificial Insemination, Embryo Transfer, DNA testing and a few other whistles and bells, the process of herd improvement is much faster and more efficient.

This process was known as "Animal Husbandry" and has evolved into the subject of "Animal Breeding and Genetics".

Face, thanks for the clarification. I do not remember doing anything with the tails of the cattle. I got this info from the lyrics of the song. Towards the end of the song, there is a line something like "Early every Spring, we round up the doggies, brand them and do something to their tales. It sure does not sound like castration. Maybe you could play the song again and listen to this and if you know what they are talking about please let me know.

I really enjoyed all the other info which you gave us about cattle, it was very informative.

As far as being on the cattle drives in the 1860's, I sure feel like I did that. I did see many cattle drives watching movies as a kid so it could be a dub in but it sure does not feel like one. Rising early in the morning in the fresh air out on the prarie seems so real and then the genuiness and friendship of all the other riders, the warm fire, breakfast being cooked, fresh coffee being brewed. It all seems very real and brings tears to my eyes everytime I think about it.

I have two comments: On the Indian killing me in a past life, I just have a mental picture of me and another guy putting up some fencing out on the range. After a while I noticed a single Indian watching me very intently. I looked at him and we made eye contact. He was really staring at me intensely. I went back to my work and a few minutes later I saw him taking aim at me with a bow and arrow. It was too late for me to move, he released the arrow and scored a bullseye. I died right there on the spot.

I don't know for sure of this actually happened but it seems very real. I used the word renegade just to mean that he was alone and did not appear to be working in tandem with a group of Indians or a tribe. I meant him no harm. Its no big deal, just a picture I have. I trusted him enough to not even pay him any mind while I was working. If this was a true incident, then trusting him was a big mistake but then he must have been wronged severly by white people to shoot me for no reason.

On the huge Hawaiian ranch, I really appreciate the info you sent along. I had no idea such a ranch existed and am glad to hear about it. When thinking of Western music, I usually think of open range mostly in desert country but then Wyoming, Montana and Idaho were part of the American West and those states are pretty green so why not Hawaii? Talking about the West, Hawaii is much further West than any other state so cowboy music is legit in Hawaii as that excellent singer and yoddler proved.

Do you think they ever had cattle drives in Hawaii? On the big island it is about 60 miles or so from one side to the other so it would definitely be possible to have some sort of drive to move the cattle from on ranch to another.
