Re: The old days - Aboard the Apollo - 1973

Carmelo, don't forget to mention the e-book that will be coming out shortly. Also we are planning an audio book so that you can hear the best of the Apollo thread while you are driving your car, working out, jogging or walking. There is even a movie deal in the works. Moe from the 3 Stooges will play Lakey and Travolta is being looked at for playing Carmelo. Both Candy Swanson and Reece Witherspoon are audtioning for the role of Sweetness and Light, the thread hostess in our early days.

T-shirts and coffee mugs are also in the works!

We are kicking around a slogan, so far the best we have come up with is, "Today ESMB, tomorrow the Internet!" (based on the German slogan 1932-1945).

Of course the hits stat is the most important thing, how could anyone believe otherwise?! One reason why I am ignorant is that when I go to read a book, I simply check to see how many pages it has and then go online to see how many copies have been sold. That's all I need to know before I check off the book as having been read. Maybe, if I actually read the book I might not be so ignorant.

Here's a tip, if you are considering which car to buy, no need to waste time reading up on various models or even bother test driving them or talking to owners. The key is to look up the sales stats for each particular model you are interested in. Let the public do your research for you, obviously, the models which sell the best are the best cars, save time and let the public do your vetting for you.
Lakey
P.S. I am only going to mention stats one last time and that will be if we break one million. Before that and after that I won't ever mention them again. If we reach one million, I will mention that event and look forward to a new round of critical posts. Don't forget, since I am ignorant, the various negative critiques have no effect on me.

What the heck is a thread hostess?

ESMB & Pilot communicates from "A Hidden Place" :wink2:

...
ESMB has far more readers daily than the Apollo Thread. From my periodic cursory looks, ESMB’s readers are pretty much similar to the Apollo Thread’s…mostly guest lurkers. Often time there are “Hot” contemporary Threads on ESMB that get 3,000 or more hits in a day. I’ve also noticed that many guest lurkers are reading “old” threads. There’s absolutely no way to know whether or not the guest lurkers are reading contemporary posts on the Apollo Thread. And, as perhaps half of the content, or more, of the Thread is none Scn related, there’s no way to know whether or not they are all reading about Scn stuff at all.
...

I much appreciate that note (in its entirety). Thank you.

I also don't have much affinity for "high stats" and ran a magazine for many years where the readership stayed on and on at about 150. To me it is a bad indicator (a minor one - more of an irritation button) that every time one posts on this board some sort of a "snob title" gets announced, based on the number of times one posts.

Two or three months ago in visiting a friend I found that he had made a close study of the Pilot's posts, and even made his own selection. That was the seed that started the "Pilot Speaks from the Dead" thread. I decided, with contributions sent to me by this friend to post them on three lists I was associated with feeling that maybe the Pilot's work had become a little forgotten. (I will certainly publish contributions by others, and there is nothing to stop anyone posting their favorite Pilot Post or other quote)

I thought of this board, but had not really made my self familiar with it, and did not have a clue how to start a thread. However talking to another friend he offered to put the first one up for me. I even lent him my password (I should have demanded a high deposit :) ) and he put it up. Much was my surprise when I found it was on a thread called The old days - Aboard the Apollo - 1973. It was explained to me something like "it gets 1,000 hits a day". Whenever I look, there are less than ten people looking at it, self included, mostly they are guests, and I don't know if they are interested in "Brazil", a ship I had never heard of (I'm European) or Pilot Reposts.

So that's why you are seeing these reposts here. I intended to show to a small quality readership bright points of a man with a mixed career. It would be a pity if this deteriorated into a discussion amongst people who do not know all the facts on how the Pilot came to be in his present hidden place.
It is quality (of readership) that counts for me.

All the best

Ant (call me that if you can't remember there is not an 'h' in my first name :) )

I don't know what a thread hostess is either, but it looks like CarmeloOrchards is taking applications online at Monster.com.

A Thread Hostess is the Apollo Thread OP's term for a refinement of what the OP calls "Vinay Tech" for bumping and extending one's own thread solely to perpetuate the Thread and get Stats that was employed during the old days aboard the Apollo Thread.

You have several folks that have the duty to comment on, schmooze, cajole, ack, etc anyone that posts on the Thread so as to elicit, solicit, encourage, etc them to post again and to look at the Thread at least once per day, thereby keeping the thread alive, creating more hits, having the Thread appear on the old ESMB Front Page nearly 24/7 and, as soon as possible, appearing on the top 10 list.

Thanks Ant, (I’m gonna call you Ant ‘cause I think it’s a way cool moniker:coolwink:)

That was all good for folks here to know.

Amongst the broad readership of this Thread, there is a quality of readership that is most apropos, appreciative and discerning re Ken’s work.

There are Links to, excerpts from and whole sections of the works of Johnnie Mac, Alan Walters and others of their pedigree to be found here as well as learned discussions re same. I think what you intended to do with this material is being well served by placing it here. At the same time, it will most probably also be viewed by folks that could care less and will move on to what does interest them here. This joint has turned into movable feast smorgasbord but there’s an international cadre of consummate gastronomes that frequent the place to, along with other dishes, consume specifically the type of Swedish Meat Balls you’re serving up.

I never knew Ken but I did know and was quite fond of his mother and am very appreciative of you and Carmelo for providing further information about her that I did not know. That Ken was a so gifted at Maths and logic systems makes complete sense to me…his Mum was one sharp cookie with a lively, lovely smile.

As we say in my part of the World…

Let ‘er buck!:happydance:

Kind Regards,

Re: The old days - Aboard the Apollo - 1973

What the heck is a thread hostess?

Before Carmelo and I got acquainted, Sweetness & Light was posting here a lot. In October of 2009, I told her that I was out of stories about Yvonne and Celebrity Centre and the thread was dying out and I was going to let it go. She urged me to continue and then Carmelo contacted me with the idea to expand it and change the format.

Sweetness always greeted each person who posted here, first giving them a short nickname and then welcoming then and being chatty with them. Also in late 2009, we were having a monthly coffee get together for all the people in the L.A. and O.C. areas who posted on the thread. Sweetness made all the calls and set things up although I don't believe that she herself was ever able to attend any meetings. We did about 4 of those and then that died out.

Therefore, Carmelo, Sweetness and I formed the nucleus and I just created the title for her of "Thread Hostess", sort of the Vanna White of the thread. She stayed with it for a long time, well over a year before moving on and doing other things on ESMB. These newer thread hosts whom Carmelo is interviewing look like they are qualified.

one more, which leaves more questions for me.

http://www.forum.exscn.net/showthre...he-Apollo-1973&p=388806&viewfull=1#post388806

an interview with Kima Douglas in Oakland, CA. 1986. I was there Michael and Kima Douglas, Allan Kapular, my wife and I, the Avatar founder (don't remember his name). Who did the interview?

Harry Palmer was the guy who founded Avatar, he operated out of upstate New York, Elvira, if my memory serves correctly.

Thanks for the clarification Ant! (Sorry about adding an "h" to your name). Yes, quality of readership is what counts! There are many knowledgeable and high quality people who post on ESMB and many of the better informed ones read and post on this thread regularly.

The number of members who are named as being on any thread on ESMB at a given time is understated because there is an option each of us has to keep our name concealed when we log on to a thread. I'm guessing that about 33% to 40% of the members use this option.

Here's a little prompter for folks who may have "put off till later" the little bit of help I asked for in an earlier post.

I am short some votes to qualify for a grant . . .

"Thanks to a program sponsored by JPMorganChase Bank and LivingSocial called Mission: Small Business℠, Virginia's and my business could qualify for a $250,000 grant. But we need at least 250 votes at missionsmallbusiness.com to qualify. To vote for our business Ability Press:

Go to missionsmallbusiness.com
click 'Log In & Support' and log in using Facebook.
Put Ability Press in the Business Name search box.
Click on the blue Vote button next to our business name to show your support for our business."

Thanks for any and all help rendered :yes:

I like your post Face but I honestly don't think that any folks actually have such duties, at least not formal duties. It seems to be self generating, nobody has to go out of their way to push it. We've had some lulls in recent months where nothing much happens for 3 or 4 days.

The thing about "acking" someone new who posts on a thread for the first time is just being neighborly and welcoming. Some of the new people just out of C of S are unsure what to do when they first post on ESMB. If they write something, it just makes good sense to acknowledge them and make them feel more at home.

Yvonne at CCLA was very big on doing that type of thing. Someone would wonder into Celebrity Centre, wondering if they were enough of a celebrity to qualify to hang out and do courses there. Yvonne immediately greeted them effusively and made them feel important and wanted. That's not Rocket Science.

I've always admitted to that procedure which Vinnay did to extend a thread. If you post something new every 24 hours, your thread will appear on the front page nearly 24/7. It's a sneaky way of artificially extending a thread. That technique does have its limitations. As a newer person in 2009, I did a thread on "Education". Roger and "V"in joined in as did Ted and Olska. It was going strong for about 3 weeks and then it just died. I applied Vinnay's technique to extend it a couple of times and it did not work. I tried to revive it a couple months later but there was no response at all. Ditto about my thread about the "Origins of CCLA". About 80 people on ESMB were interested and they read it in the first 4 days and about 20 of them posted comments. After that the thread was dead. There was no way to keep it going.

When people lose interest, it's all over. An individual can post once or twice to keep it on the front page but I've never seen an OP post 3 times in a row, replying to his own posts. If no one replies after two times, the thread is usually done.

Sometimes, a thread can come back to life after no action for over a year as just happened with Sharone's thread commenting on Candy's videos. That came back with a flurry of extremely heavy action for about 3 weeks and then just died out again. The Apollo thread seems to be self generating. Its still serving its intended purpose but when people lose interest, it will die out just like all the other threads have.

Re: The old days - Aboard the Apollo - 1973

Soliloquy

Supposing an organisation, with members of differing ethical standards (as is any group) has as a basic purpose, perhaps unspoken, the freeing of people and works at that under different guises over 60 years. It is working to free people from traps of various types. Over the years, within that organisation, knowledge will be obtained. Some of it may not be widely known, but it is there. And in working to free people one must, unless one is unbelievably stupid, gain knowledge of how individuals can be trapped. Over 60 plus years a large amount of knowledge of how to trap people (and hold them trapped) would be obtained. Many ways, with different degrees of brutality, cruelness and covertness. Maybe it is not available to all, freely. But the despotic leader can get it out.

Now imagine that a really despotic person comes along, and gets into a position of control. It would be possible for that person to enforce out of every nook and cranny of that organisation very refined ways of holding members trapped within the organisation. Including subtle ways. One possibility would be to encourage negative tendencies existing in those outside of the organisation who might be critical of the organisation.

This train of thoughts originally arose when (with great glee) I was shown some videos which the “Church” has put on YouTube. They are short excerpts of LRH talks/lectures where he describes his experiences, sometimes as quite young. They are from lectures originally taped, and thus there was no video. They do not seem to contain much data on life. But the Church has (cunningly, in my view) added video material which illustrates the time period Ron is referring to, but also in my view: (a) painting a picture of Ron, the great leader and genius and (b) painting a picture of how dangerous the environment is, with the undertone of how badly we need to follow what the organisation lets its members know of Ron's “path”.

Of course the reason I spent time writing the above and putting it on this gargantuan thread at this time is to appeal to you not to concentrate on discussing the Pilot's demise and events leading up to it. That is playing into the Church's hands (quoting a song “Gloom and misery everywhere – stormy weather” :) ). No, please concentrate on the positive (“Accentuate the positive” - also a song from my younger days).

If you want to bathe in a moment of Positive Pilot, take a look at his Reformation Home page: http://freezoneearth.org/pilot/reformer.html That is not where the “Church” wants you to put your attention. So why not put your attention there – out of spite!

All best wishes,

Ant

PS. If you need more incentive to look at that link, note this. When I was thrown out of the “Church” in 1983, I firmly (and rather unconsciously) believed that the ends justified the means. So do those in that monster today (the underlings). If it was a question of supporting Scientology, which would save the world (the end) any thing was justifiable. That would include trapping countless people, as well as breaking societies laws and covertly killing off enemies who could not be "handled".
