The best of Robert Fulton's work has a timeless quantity to it also and so does Henry Ford's. That doesn't mean that we still build steam ships to sail the oceans nor do we drive around in Model T's. Ditto for the Wright brothers and especially Thomas Edison. You don't see people still using an Edison style phonograph where you crank it up and put a 78 rpm wax record on it.
All subjects should be allowed to advance with the times. This one subject, created by LRH, is forbidden by its creator from developing any further unless the work is done by him. If Scio was a real religion this might make some sense but Hubbard promoted it very heavily as a science.
Look at COS, about 125,000 active paying members in 1992 and down to about 1/4 that number today. You know, I believe it was Ian Wexler, an old time scientologist who mentioned it to me at a party of Indie people about 6 months ago. He said that when the current generation of old time ex scientologists, such as me and many of those who post on ESMB is gone no standard auditors will any longer be in training on planet Earth. The official COS certainly is not producing standard tech auditors any longer and there is not much training going on out in the Indie field. When the current crop of Indie auditors dies out, there will probably still be a significant demand for auditing out in the field but probably very few younger auditors will be around to satisfy that demand.
Hey, maybe the Indie field can resort to creating Solo auditors, just like what happened when too many Swedes came to the Apollo for auditing on the OT Levels, as Purple Haze covered above. Certainly, the field, in the next generation should be clever enough to train up most of their members to be solo auditors so that they can still audit themselves up the bridge.

Interesting that you mention that group, how about adding those who still think that Elvis is alive? Then of course there is the Climate Change crowd, asserting imminent failure of our ecosystem unless drastic changes are made in our national budgets, with a considerable number of accredited scientists both in favor of their conclusions and against their conclusions.
These guys are not on a par with the flat Earth crowd due to the large body of scientific evidence supporting their claims. I personally think the Climate Change scare tactics are mostly bogus with some truth interspersed throughout their claims. I am not qualified to make a judgement, that is for sure, but anybody can have their own opinion. My feelings are just gut feelings gathered by observing how some of the Climate Change advocates are living their own lives.
I'm talking about people such as Al Gore and the film maker, Michael More. People such as Gore tell others what to do, i.e. buy a small house with solar heating and windmill produced electricity and don't take long auto trips during the summer. It makes sense on first hearing and then you find out that Mr. Gore owns several high energy consuming mansions all around the world and that he travels from place to place in his own private jet plane, rather than fly in commercial airlines. He tried to get around these anomalies by developing carbon credits so he could trade off having his own private jet with granting a tax to an eco friendly company but doing that is not very convincing.
Another guy who is inconsistent is the very likable Robert F. Kennedy Jr. As sincere as he appears to be, even he shows inconsistencies the same as Gore does. He also wants people to shift over to green cars and avoid repeated long trips by car or plane but in his own life, he does not really practice what he preaches. He lives in Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts, an area of estates near the sea, which only multi millionaires can afford. Kennedy loves wind generated power but a windmill company was in the process of obtaining permits for windmills on Martha's Vineyard and those windmills would have spoiled the view for many of the millionaires who live there. With his vast influences, Bobby Kennedy Jr., got the local officials to deny the permit to the windmill company and they had to build elsewhere.
I would bet you that if a windmill company wants to erect wind mills in a nice upper middle class housing tract area, if the homeowners' association there attempted to block their permits, the association would be completely ignored. A multimillionaire with the Kennedy name and money can get things done to bypass '"green" laws where rank and file people have not the slightest chance of succeeding.

although the best of it is timeless, CoS is severely hampered by the topical nature of so much of ron's writing. today, in order to study his work one needs to study the historical context of the mid-twentieth century, a time immensely different from the early 21st century. among many other things, few people today understand how truly horrid psychiatry was in 1950. it's still bad but it has been vastly reformed and the good efforts of dianeticists have been a HUGE factor in those reforms

there's billionaires with estates on martha's vineyard but actually the majority of the island population is regular folk. for many years the pastor of the baptist church on the island was best friend when i was a kid in ipswich and i went to visit him there a few years ago; wonderful salt of the earth people in his congregation. he's done well; sort of the protestant equivalent of an archbishop at the head of more than 600 baptists churches in massachusetts. he was a tremendous influence on my life. when i was twelve he and his aunt dragged me to the jack wyrtzen revival meeting at boston garden where i "accepted christ as my personal savior"

I come down somewhere between Birdy and you on these issues. I don't think scientology in 1953 was as evil as it is today. When I got in in 1970, the same was true. The big difference was that there was an intense interest at all levels of management for people to get trained and processed. Back in 1953, they did not gather the stats and assign conditions and all that type of stuff that started to take priority over getting people trained and processed. Also, there were not huge collection drives for Ideal Orgs, the Super Power building nor even the IAS. Under DM, things have really changed with not much interest being placed on training and processing while enormous amounts of money are being gathered for buildings and associations.
I will grant you, Free Being Me, that the seeds of evil in the organization were planted in the Organization in 1953 but. IMHO, those seeds were not yet being harvested.
On Psychiatry, I tend to agree with you for the most part. I know that two pioneers of Psychiatry had noble aspirations to help people. I am speaking of Freud and Jung. Hubbard himself, had learned much of Freud's work from Commander "Snake" Thompson and Hubbard could improve people's cases using Freudian techniques. Hubbard even acknowledges Freud as the Father of Mental Healing in one of his taped lectures. His compliment to Freud is restricted. LRH says that Freud was the first to realize that something could be done about curing mental illness. He goes on to say that the things which Freud came up with were not very workable or successful, focusing mostly on sex but nevertheless he salutes Freud for being the first to realize that something could be done. Hubbard says that by Freud only doing that much, he made a major contribution to mental healing.
Psychiatry seems to have started strongly with Freud, Jung and others. They apparently took some wrong turns by later putting their focus on drugs and also cutting parts of the brain to make a person more tractable. In recent years, the subject seems to have recovered and some of their treatments do have a positive effect on a person's state of mind. Some of the drug treatments do seem to have a place in mental treatment. I don't think they will ever be able to effect a total cure but they can alleviate symptoms enough for a person to start a regimen of diet, exercise and counseling and those types of things can be valid pieces of tech in putting a person's life back together.
I don't know what effect if any, COS has produced in improving the state of today's psychiatry over that of the 1950's Maybe they have had some effect, maybe not. COS has sure spent a lot of money trying to reign in destructive forms of Psychiatry and the subject today is much more effective than the 1950's version. How and why this happened would be a good topic for a thread here on ESMB. I for one would like to learn more on how these improvements came to be.

To be frank, I don't see a whole lot of difference in these two definitions.
On a personal note, in 1967. 3 years before joining scientology, I went to see a Psychoanalyst or Psychiatrist or whatever you want to call it. He was a PHD and had Dr. in front of his name. I was having trouble establishing a long term relationship with women. A friend of mine whom I am still friends with, recommended him to me. I paid him $25 an hour, about $150 in today's money for a one hour session. I went to see him 5 times. I would tell him what had happened on various dates which I had that week and he would evaluate for me and give me his opinions on what transpired. Two things really bothered me, first was that he was often yawning and even dozed off twice and second, he was shutting off the sessions after 40 to 45 minutes, often while I was in the middle of telling him something I thought was important. At my request, he gave me a prescription for a tranquilizer, which at that time was called librium. I asked for that because I was very nervous and was hyperventilating and having trouble sleeping.
After the 5th session I quit. He tried very hard to keep me from quitting, insisting that I needed more treatment but I walked out never to return to him or any other therapist.
In the supposed enlightened COS, they considered that I had a "Psych" History and every time I wanted to take an important step, like joining staff or doing Clear or the OT Levels, I would have to write up a CSW (Completed Staff Work) describing my "psych history". As far as I know, whether one saw a psychoanalyst or a psychiatrist, it matter not in COS - seeing either type of practitioner was considered having a "psych" history.
Later on, when I started to pull away from COS and wanted out, I used my "psych history" as a means of getting out or not committing to join things. It was very convenient to use that term and it made it very easy to get out of doing some activity which I did not want to do. I would mention that I was not eligible because I had a "psych history". Staff members would accept that as a valid excuse to route me through. Some even said, "Oh I see that you have a "psych" history, that explains why you are not performing up to par. When I wanted to move deeper into COS, the psych history held me back but when I wanted to disentangle from COS, it was a terrific ally!!

Let me get this straight, you know he's back living on Earth and you're okay that he doesn't give a hoot about CoS? If he was back and was attempting to be ethical, he should be busy attempting to clean up COS. He did not leave in a condition of Power or Power Change. He left without appointing the best possible successors to take over his various hats in Tech and Management.
As a result, COS has gone off the rails and a lot of lives have been wrecked. If he followed his own teachings and policies, he would get busy writing up his overt Acts and withholds and working through the lower condition formulas.
That's one of the problems with LRH, he could talk a good game and create some inspiring policies for others to use. Unfortunately he thought that he was a God and was above following those policies himself so he chose not to use them in his own life. As a result, the lives of many of his followers were ruined, families were broken up and the group which he founded is rapidly reducing in size and is now mainly a real estate business, cloaked to look like a religion so as to be able to imprison people and turn them into slave laborers without any interference from governments.
If you feel he has the right to go off and do something else without first attempting to clean up the mess he created with COS, it indicates to me that you do not have a good conceptual understanding of his Conditions Formulas and ethics policies. IMHO, he would need to to apply those on himself first and clean up COS before he could go on to some other profession.
BTW, if he was back, I doubt that he would be interested in Civil Engineering. He mentions several times on his tapes that his Father chose Civil Engineering as his field of study and insisted that he enroll in that major at George Washington University. He states that it was too tame and mundane for him to pursue and according to his academic records, he failed several of the science and math courses which he took and flunked out of school after only two years. According to his own words on tape, he chose not to attend those classes and instead, he quit the University and took up a career as a pulp fiction writer.

i like to think my high heat is good as anyone's in this bush league and i like to paint the black up and in but i get a couple strikes on a batter i'll come in with a slow curve off the plate to see if i can make 'em go fishin'...

there's quite a bit of difference between those definitions and a hell of a difference between psychoanalysis and psychiatry
and what ignorance abounds in CoS!!!
five visits to a psychoanalyst, even such an incompetent jackal as you describe is no more a "psych history" than talking over personal difficulties with the pastor of your church
they don't understand their own materials in CoS lakey. it's the blind leading the hard of hearing and it always was. i was one of the best students who ever walked in the door and was very quick on the uptake (also very, very sharp at spotting weaknesses) but there were things which were fairly simple not understood in there which i only managed to puzzle out years later
still...
i'm very impressed with the way it is constructed. at the bottom line the training is geared for a gorilla and the discipline involves materials which are so potent even a rote application of procedure can produce good, excellent or even wondrous results. and the discipline for course supervisors is ingenious. their materials are designed primarily to A. prevent them from teaching their own stupidities and B to prevent them from keeping the bright lights in their charge from learning
the tech was built to last; it reminds me of a short story by sabrehagen early in his berserker series...
it's a very interesting and apt metaphor. story was anthologized by judith merril, i forget the title. earthling pilot in a spaceship with a trained ape co pilot trying to hold out against a berserker until help arrives...
