I have fun mentioning the stats. It is such a nothing topic but is amazing that mentioning it always produces a huge negative reaction. Stats here are not being inflated artificially nor are they false. Also, this is not done in the best tradition of CoS. We got 18,600 hits here so far this week. What is false about that? How was it inflated?. We have only two stats, umber of views, number of posts and number of pages of text, Since there are always about 10 pages on a page of text, that narrows thing down to just two stats, number of replies and number of views. We don't put a push on to get them up every Thursday, we don't graph them, we don't assign conditions based on them. No one person is responsible for the stats, no one person controls the stats. No money is involved. Saying this is in the best traditions of the Church of Scientology is just not a true statement.

Hits are different than a unique page view. A page on which six files load = 6 hits. One person seated in front of the computer views the one page in a discrete moment in time but there could be multiple hits.

Dear FBM,

Are you attempting to prevent\deny this thread reaching St-Hill size ???? :confused2:

Come on - come clean!

I wish that this thread had an IAS type war chest where we could promise St Hill size for those willing to send in checks to us. Just kidding by the way, I don't really mean that.

I think that St. Hill size is a bad term to use when even when making a joke about a thread. Let's face it, all threads on ESMB have exceeded St. Hill Size because no internet existed in St. Hill's time and therefore all threads at St. Hill had 0 views, 0 posts and 0 pages. Even the smallest thread on all of ESMB has already exceeded that size.

Moderator 3 seems to know what he is talking about. I had no idea that the # of views stat is falsely inflated. I am sorry to hear about that. It's not that important to me but I would be interested to read more about the topic....

Lakey, you yourself have told us often that you're no genius when it comes to the workings of the internet or computers. I'll try to help you understand some basics.

Why does your mentioning the stats produce a "huge negative reaction"? Well (quite apart from the fact that the reaction is hardly "huge") in simple terms, when you reference the # of views you're forwarding an illusion based on false and misleading information. The Admins and Moderators here know what that number actually represents (see below). The conundrum facing me as the Moderator assigned to this thread is, "Should I just allow this illusion to stand, it is patently false but is it actually hurting anyone?"

I have several times thought to PM you about this and even invited you to PM me the other day, I thought you'd take me up on that offer but you chose the blue pill rather than the red.

(The red pill and its opposite, the blue pill, are popular culture symbols representing the choice between embracing the sometimes painful truth of reality (red pill) and the blissful ignorance of illusion (blue pill). Redpills are people who have chosen to face reality, while bluepills remain living in ignorance of the truth, whether by choice or because they have not had a choice.)

Here, then, is the red pill (in simple language which might be easily understood);

ESMB, like many active and popular message boards, is constantly under attack by spammers/hackers/DoSers. A commonly used "doorway" is the most active/long-standing/most current thread or Blog post. The attack is done by robots (computer programs which run script to attempt to gain access to a server). Sometimes attacks come from multiple sources and result in the website slowing down noticeably or being inaccessible.

When just one such "robot" hits a thread or Blog post it will attempt access in short (usually around 20 second) hits. That's 3 times a minute, 180 times an hour and 4,320 a day. When multiple robots hit the site... you get the picture?

You'd have to ask yourself a simple question, "If this thread had over 2 million views by the denizens of the internet, where are the responses?"

Whenever you see the numbers increasing rapidly like that you can be sure of one thing, it's something odd happening. Watch the rate at which the numbers increase and you'll see the pattern emerging. We once had a nondescript (but most recent) Blog post garner over a thousand hits while I wrote the report on it, that was 1000 hits in approximately 5 minutes.

As I said, there are 2 things to celebrate about this thread;

1. It's the longest continually running thread here and

2. It has the most posts on it and is constantly in Today's Posts

(both points are probably the reason behind so much hack-action)

On points 1 and 2 above :congratulations:

(# of pages is kinda moot as a stat seeing as how anyone here can adjust the settings for # posts per page)

As I said, I don't tell you this in order to burst your bubble or denigrate the thread in any way.

In the past I've taken you at your word that you wouldn't mention the Hits Stat again and so have been content in my reasoning that it didn't actually harm anyone to withhold this information. Now, I've changed my mind.

Hits are different than a unique page view. A page on which six files load = 6 hits. One person seated in front of the computer views the one page in a discrete moment in time but there could be multiple hits.

I am not sure that we are talking apples to apples. At this precise moment, we exactly 2,018,802 hits, 22,125 replies. and 2213 pages. Thus there are 3 stats tracked for any given thread: views, replies and pages. I just said that since inception, this thread has always averaged 10 replies per page. Probably that is common to all threads on the board.

My point was that the 3 stats could easily be condensed to only 2 stats by not bothering to track the number of pages a thread has. If you track the replies, then all you have to do is multiply that by 10 and then you will know how many pages the thread has thus only 2 stats need be tracked.

Okay, no I have been told by moderator 3 literally just minutes ago that the views stat is not accurate and that the length of time which a thread has endured as being active is an important stat

One reason I don't care much about views being in error is that we are over 2 million where an average thread is lucky these day to reach 2,000. I figure that if views are in error, then a small thread and a large thread will both have distorted figures. We show up as 1,000 times larger than an average thread. If our figures are wrong than their figures will be correspondingly wrong too. We will still be 1.000 times larger.

i worked as a web developer. I am qualified to know the mod is correct. This doesn't mean we can't celebrate, and we did. But behind the scenes the hits don't match up to what you envision. Also there are general facts about posts, how many people who read a post or page actually respond. And that stat does not correlate to hits.

Okay, Moderator 3, thanks for the explanation of why this thread has the 2 million volume. When you ask, where are the replies for a volume of 2 million views, well that was easily explained by realizing that the vast majority are Lurkers and not ESMB Board members. ESMB membership is in the 5,000 to 7,000 range is it not and many of those members suppress their names form appearing on certain counts so replies of 22,215 made pretty good sense for a thread with 2.000.000 views.

So now we find out that instead of being swarmed by large numbers of lurkers, we are being swarmed by a large number of would be hackers. Well that is a bit scary and I would like to thank you moderators and Emma for minimizing the effects of those hackers.

The bottom line is that of our 2 million hits a large number are not actual viewers. There again, I could care less. i really don't care much about stats, not really. I do enjoy tracking numbers but if a number is inaccurate and only inaccurate for the largest thread on the board well than I just won't track it. I still know for sure that we are the largest thread on the board because we are serving as the attempted entry point for hackers. We passed the FCDC thread right about at the 162,000 hit mark, probably somewhere around 2011. Up until then, I guess they were the main target of hackers and since then we have been. Well its good to get that sorted out.

Really the only stat which I care about and I believe that Carmelo feels the same, is the quality of the posts taking place here, The quality of the postings and the freedom to post one's opinion without immediately being swarmed on by detractors who criticize not what one says but criticize the person himself or herself. We have far less of that than other threads do and we have good quality posts and it is possible to meet good quality friends on this thread and those things are what I am really going for and what Carmelo was going for too when he posted here. If we are unable to sustain those things then I'll be out of here quickly, I can guarantee you that.

Right. I think of ESMB as a huge party at Emma's place. There are all sorts of people in attendance and it's a fun and noisy affair.

We have a group over in the kitchen discussing history and art, we have a group in the lounge-room telling jokes and cracking everyone (including themselves) up, we have guys out on the patio talking about their life experiences, we have guys who keep changing the music videos (and nobody really minds except the Moderators who have to keep moving them from General Scientology Discussion to the Music Video sub-forum... yes, you-who-will-remain-nameless, you know who you are and you know what you did!), we have people dancing and singing "LOL, THANKS, LIKE, HUH? and WTF?". We have all sorts.

The only kind we don't have here for any length of time are those people who insist upon spraying hateful and/or lunatic graffiti on Emma's walls. We bounce those guys, post haste!

Keep this thread positive, interesting and meaningful and all will be well. :)

i worked as a web developer. I am qualified to know the mod is correct. This doesn't mean we can't celebrate, and we did. But behind the scenes the hits don't match up to what you envision. Also there are general facts about posts, how many people who read a post or page actually respond. And that stat does not correlate to hits.

I never correlated hits to replies except in a very rudimentary fashion. I might figure that a thread with 50,000 hits would have more replies than a thread with 5000 hits. That is about as far as I would take the correlation. I was only correlating pages with views. That correlation was proven to be valid by moderator 3 He said that a thread could choose how many replies they wanted on a page. Maybe the default option is ten. We have always had 10 replies posted on every page since our inception. We never choose that number but it has been constant since inception.

See the response I just wrote to Moderator 3 above. I read what he said and fully got it. One consolation is that we know for sure that we are the largest thread because we are the thread that would be hackers are choosing to swarm to. I guess if some other thread began having more action than us, then the hackers would gravitate over to that thread but that probably will not happen while this thread is still active. Another similar point is that we started small and passed all the other threads to get to be the largest, passing the DC thread at 162,000 views around 2011. So we know for sure that we went from 10,000 views 2 days after my birthday, i.e. December 7 in 2010 and sometime in 2011 or maybe late 2010 we passed the DC thread with 162.000 views. Thus we made about 144,000 hits or 12.000 a month that first year. 4 and a half years have gone by since then. If our true hits ran out at 144,000 a month the last 4 1/2 years plus the first year, our true hits would be about 800,000 right now instead of 2 million. Even at that, we would still be by far the largest thread.

However, as I told moderator 3 above, that is not important. What is important is just making good quality posts without being crucified while doing it and having fun, learning things, keeping your mental acuity sharp and meeting new people while posting here. If all that good stuff is in, frankly, who gives a hoot what the stats are. I don't really care that much, really I don't. Lakey may care but Gary does not really give a rat's ass about the thread's stats. Lakey is putting on a little show, just to test the direction of the wind.

This is one of greatest posts I have ever read!

Kudos go to Carmelo for this! This is his baby, I just went along for the ride. We were talking more in terms of a morning newspaper or a magazine. He hatched the idea and then the two of us talked it over. He was thinking of a guy going on the Apollo thread with his morning coffee, first thing every morning before he left for work and then checking in again when he got home. That was a good analogy, which he and me were kicking around but your description above tops even that.

IMO, it is sort of like a housewarming party or maybe a group of friends getting together after work. A couple of guys are playing cards. two people are playing chess, a group is standing around a carioke machine singing old pop tunes. Someone is giving somebody a back rub while others are talking politics, business or sports and in the kitchen there is a free buffet and plenty to drink. Everyone is having a great time, having fun, learning new things and meeting new people. Cheers!! that is what this thread is all about
