1984

Hi ya'll. I changed my screen name. Since re-reading "1984" I decided to come back as Winston. Makes perfect sense even without Scn to assume his famous mantle. After all, I feel exactly like him, because today there is no US Constitution nor any sort of freedom from the goons at the Ministry of Plenty.

Ah yes

Ah yes, the so-called "United States". A banking-front corporation located in the swamps of the Potomac River. Founded by genocidists, religious nuts, drunks, land-grabbers, invaders, militarists, and a few good men and women.

is my beloved "home town". The best place to park is the Jefferson Memorial!

Did any of you????

Washington DC has an inordinate amount of "amazin" buildings-parks-museums etc etc to see and to learn from. The memorials alone are worth a visit---the art museums alone are worth a visit - the history alone is worth a visit. Do any of you have a favorite place in DC? If so -do tell........

Actually, the founding fathers were remarkably secular and worked very hard to keep religion out of government. As for the rest...yup. Except for George Washington. He was one of the most genuinely good people I can think of. When I took the time to do research on his life, it really surprised me at how good a guy he really was.

Favorite place in DC? Hrm...driving down constitution ave. It always strikes me what a seriously old and COOL place this is.

the constitution has been raped

So the tentacles of Washington reach to every square inch of the USA. Is that what the constitution promised? Let's see, there was a farmer in New Jersey who planted an acre of corn for his exclusive use. His wife ground it and they had corn meal and bread. The US Govmint comes along and says "you are regulated by the Commerce clause in the constitution" (even though NONE of his produce crossed state lines.) The Govmint said, "Yes, but it COULD cross state lines, and therefore we have jurisdiction over your corn field." (To that I say "I COULD blow someone's head off with a shotgun and be charged with murder in the first degree, but until I do that you cannot charge me with that crime.) The poor farmer had to submit to US Agriculture commerce rules. BTW, that case is why the fucking government has its stinger into every person in the USA. Mystic, I love your response...a man who sees the country as it is.

And yes, goddamit, I lived in Arlington for 27 years, Springfield for twenty years, so I Know Washington pretty well.

Yes, I enjoyed many of the museums. Favorite place? That Greek restaurant.

I was partial to Au Pied de Cochon in Georgetown. Great Ratatouille and excellent French onion soup, not to mention the coqavin and the to die for croissants! Very cheap and tons of fun too!

I like the paddle boats in the tidal basin:

It looks like..

a lot of us real enjoy the Jefferson Memorial--has been my favorite place since I was a kid.
Let us give "thanks to Ladybird" for her beautiful photo of the Cherrty Trees that adorn the Tidal Basin.

Tourists Beware!

I have on numerous occasions been given very expensive cameras by tourists who wish to have their pictures taken. Do not give your cameras to a stranger. Being a "local" - we are very aware that some folks who are given cameras to take pictures of tourists-literally - take them home. Tourists are such trusting souls--asking some other person to snap their photo and then seeing that person "run" away with their expensive camera. You would not give a signed blank check or a credit card to a reg so do not give your camera to a stranger.

Uncle Sam,

Are you trying to ruin my used camera shop business?

Washington DC is all around gorgeous. Couldn't pick a favorite place, but the Memorials are a must-see; every one is amazing and inspiring. After that (and the Capitol/Supreme Court/Library of Congress) the Smithsonian museums. (I am very cultured; I particularly enjoyed Jerry Sienfeld's puffy shirt and Archie Bunkers chair.) :wink2:
