Protest Report from the old Tampa critic cell
This was my 2nd protest. My 1st protest was with the old Tampa/Orlando critic cell that protested the org in Ybor City about 8 years ago. That's post LMT but pre Anon.
Since I live in the Tampa area, got there fairly early. Brought my bike with me. What can I say, I love my bike and love riding it. Bicycle commuter by choice Mon to Fri.
Just 3 blocks from flag I spot a city owned building with a parking sign saying "Free public parking on weekends" Perfect, I'm close, in a shaded corner out of view in a safe parking lot. I ride my bike over to flag. Big police presence, gotta car and officer at all 4 corners watching over everything. Well I then proceed to do about 60 slow bike laps around the building being friendly and saying good morning to all the scinos. I also speak to a couple of officers , just to let them know I'm not there to disrupt anything, but to just ride around greeting the scinos and letting them know doubt is ok. I'm not big on confrontation protesting, I prefer to ride my bike slowly speaking to scinos on friendly terms 1 to 1 and let them know doubt is ok.
Well after having my 60 laps of fun, head to Coachman Park. Meet up with the Flagdown protesters. A few of us have a friendly chat with a nearby officer. He's cool with us and we are cool with all the officers watching the festivities. The officer also made it clear that they are not on any side and certainly not in scientology's pocket. We all gather at the side of the park to make signs and get ready. I don't have any anti-scion shirts so I wore my Free Tibet shirt. One of the protesters had free shirts "Scientology Destroys Families" Got one a donated a 20 to her to give to the shirt maker.
Everybody gets going close to noon and we make it over to the front of Flag. After a few minutes at that corner, we work our way to the rear. That's where the action is with the Flag busses emptying people to go into Flag. The orgs around the world maybe empty but unfortunately here its bus after bus full of scientologists. Unlike the front of flag, the back sidewalks where the buses unload were closed to us so most protesters were across the street. Of course they tried to block the view of us but we could still a lot of the scions and many could see us. They actually had 2 boomboxes playing a radio rock station to block us out. Kind of funny because if they don't play music, we will with our boombox. Anyway we did this for awhile protesting bus after bus just to let the poor clams know people on the outside care about them.
Since I have my bike, I do my Flag lap thing slowly finding individual scinos and being friendly. I simply let them know doubt is ok and wogs are not the enemy, we care about them and want them to know there are choices in life. Some will actually be friendly , some (with a security tag) complete silence. sad. unable to communicate. Wandered on my bike into the wrong parking lot. Boy, OSA was on me like white on rice, girl with clipboard rushes over to kick me out. Officer smiled, knew it was an honest mistake. Touchy touchy just wandering into the wrong lot.
Then we moved to the main throughfare nearby to get to the Beach. Tons and tons of traffic with a lot of car honks supporting us. We got a lot of smiles and thumbs up from all the beach goers. It was fun to that support from the general public. Unlike most areas of the country, Clearwater Tampa residents are for the most part very aware of the true reality of scientology. Thank you St Pete Times and especially Joe Childs excellent reporting.
After more walking around protesting, we end up in a Pizza place to rest, surf the internet, rehydrate, eat and talk.
I buy the Large pizza everything on it , have a couple slices and share the rest.
Overall a fun day.
Sametime next year. The Tampa critic cell is back baby.
The cell lives.
