Hey Lakey and friends - I also wore the slide rule (and sly drool) - just that ya forgot the plastic pocket protector to hold yer writing instruments and drafting pencil! :wink2:

And for the girl's apparel, did ya purposely leave out that wrist-numbing item the "panty girdle" ... :confused2::melodramatic:

I got my engineering degree (Mechanical) in '64, btw, from Vanderbilt in Nashville Tennessee :) a great city/town then and, I'm sure now.

You have, to my mind, ear and eye, accurately described the scene and I appreciate all your posts very much.

I'll save the "ramble" for another time and review some things first - but I want to explore something that someone posted earlier to the effect that most couples getting married were not up to dealing with the "freedoms" of marriage and thus failed at "creating" desirable or wanted "futures"...

Not sure that I got it quite right - but that concept hit me like a ton of bricks as totally applicable to my first, troubled, marriage; and I have been realigning a whole lot of hitherto unresolved things in my universe positively since that post.

(hows that for saying big "wins" and "cogs" without scn jargon?) :coolwink:

Keep on keepin' on!

Dilettantes did it differently

I am going to mock up a typical day at the Celebrity Centre in L.A. in 1972.

I wake up about 7:00 AM in my apartment, shared with my Brother, also on staff and take a shower, shave and put on a white shirt and some dark slacks and walk three blocks over to the staff house on the northwest corner of 9th & Lake. I may buy an L.A. Times on the way over to check the sports scores. I arrive at the staff house for 7:30 muster. Muster is led by Shareen Stuart who first calls roll and then leads us in calisthenics. About 35-40 staff show up. The calisthenics are mild and everyone is young so they go fast.

<SNIPPED>

Finally the CCLA show ended at midnight and I walked 1 block to my apartment and went to sleep only to start the same routine over the next day. So ends this trip through nostalgia, simulating an actual post of mine on this thread last October.

My girlfriend, from the early 70s, and I were dilettantes. The Scientology mind cult labeled off purpose fuck heads like us, "dilettantes." We wore the badge with honor.

We shared one another's houses, and often worked into the middle of the night wallpapering or painting. Clothing was generally optional.

We'd awake in the morning, and continue our lovemaking from the night before.

We had hooked up as a result of twinning on the academy levels. Between driving to and from the City or Berkeley, we fell in love within a week. Her father had been press secretary to FDR. My dad was a farmer. She was blue blood, I was hayseed farm boy. She taught me Latin and Greek. I turned her on to Kurt Vonnegut. We both devoured Agatha Christie, rock and roll, and each other.

One day we were on an academy level at the Berkeley org. Bob D'Asto, a new Flag Trained Course Sup took over the academy from Jim Darcy. We didn't like him. He was a petty martinet. At lunch we mingled with all the other students. We pointed out to each of our fellow students that course sups live and die on stats. After lunch, my girlfriend and I noticed a particularly sharp drop in our personal student points for the day. Many, if not all, of our fellow students experienced the same precipitous drop. Two days later, everybody on course was getting meter checked. Our Needles were Floating.:) The problem couldn't be us. Within another day, the guy was kicked upstairs, and our old course sup was back. We quickly finished and moved on.

If we weren't on course, we were auditing. I've heard the Golden Age of Tech has improved this by using Professor Harold Hill's "think method," but in the early 70s, we learned by doing. This probably seems odd to those of you, who followed in our tracks. A PC, who I gave her very first sessions to, was 12 back then. Forty years later she has kids going to college, and is our mortgage broker. We tend to stay connected.

At night, when we should have been on course, we would go to the flickers. Sometimes we'd see more than one movie in a night. We would pull friends off course to go with us.

On Thursday nights we'd be watching Flip Wilson on the tele.

Most often we'd stay up late making out on the couch while watching old movies with Bogey,

Hepburn, Cagney, and of course, commercials.

Weekends -- there were parties, dozens of naked people crowding into the Gerbodes' redwood hot tub, barbeques at the Spicklers', Sunday Sermons with entertainment flown up from CC -The Great American Entertainment Show, Heber, many talented acts. Hundreds of people every Sunday coming to play, be entertained and enlightened. Speakers would be Alan Kapular, Yvonne, Phil Spickler, Bob Harvey, John McMaster -- all lively speakers.

When we wanted to get away, we'd go south to Carmel and Big Sur. One night we were camping on one of my favorite beaches, Garrapata Beach, and in the middle of the night we were awoken by other campers screaming. They had set their sleeping bags on a flea nest. They were being eaten alive. Later, I found out that Garrapata means wood tick.

One fall we took the olives off her tree and cured them.

Our breakfasts were coffee and eggs, often poached and runny on whole wheat toast (so delicious) or with corned beef hash and ketchup.

Dinners at my house were barbeque steak or burgers. Dinners at her house -- boeuf bourguignon. If we ate out, it was at the Fish Market or the Wine Cellar or at any little place in the City.

Oft times we would have martinis (martinis were the official drink of Franklin Delano Roosevelt), it went with the territory.

I remember one Sunday afternoon being three sheets to the wind, and remembering I had a session to give across the Bay Bridge. It came off without a hitch. The PC, as far as I know, never realized how drunk I was.

In essence, while you were on purpose meshing with the Co$ system, we were at the opening of "The Way We Were" or "Harold and Maude" or "McCabe and Mrs. Miller" or auditing paying PCs, screaming through academy and bc courses, Oat Tea levels, going to parties, staying up late, fixing each others' houses, gardening, cooking, and generally fucking our brains out.

Strangely, the only people I know in this situation at 40+ are male. I can think of two offhand.

Most of the ones I know are female. I'm not talking about people who never marry, I'm talking about people who prefer not to have ANY sort of relationship, and remain celibate, rather than go out with somebody who does not meet their standards of perfection.

You describe a Golden Age that I'm sorry I missed.

One thing that did not endear me to the power structure was my silly idea that the purpose of Scientology was to enhance the lives of Scientologists, to make them happier and more able.

Even in the Sea Org, I saw myself as a volunteer, rather than a conscripted slave --- a crucial difference in viewpoint that resulted in my decision to leave the SO after a year and a half when I decided that what I was doing was bullshit.

Matching our memories

As I wrote in the early part of my thread, I particpated one day in glueing down those carpet samples. It was either at the very tail end of 1970 or very early in 1971 as I reckon it.

I'm guessing Fall of '70. Possibly the tail end of Fall. (Must have missed the part where you talked about laying the carpet.)

I was public there while my brother was on staff as first Success Officer and later as letter reg. I was on course there and a pitch was made to public students to help glue down the carpet. I volunteered. The carpet was definitely donated free and so was the labor to glue it down. There was no pattern to follow, we just put each piece in a mosaic with color matching being done to our own personal tastes. Yvonne was there when we started and she would check in on us every 45 minutes or so, and had a big toothy grin and would nod her approval and give us all thanks. She was really at her very best when her Org was being physically created. Ear to ear grins and up a spirit of play and games on the tone scale..

I recall having fun with it, though I suspect I had a few incomplete post cycles on my mind as well. Was certainly happy to be done.

My brother who had the makings of a GREAT stand up comedian and could have been one if he the ability to work for that, which he did not, made a really funny remark just after we all finished the job and were sitting there sipping cold drinks which were given us free from the snack bar. He said, and I quote, "So many people, including celebrities, have commented on how beautiful and artistic our patchwork carpet is. All of them believe that we are laying this type of carpet to create an artistic space, none of them know the truth that we are laying this type of carpet because it is the only thing which we can afford because we are getting it done, labor and material, for free." That comment really cracked me up. At that time I was still public and had no idea how strong or weak the Org's finances were.

As time would tell, once I joined staff, I quickly found out that the Org was operating on a shoe string. The measly staff pay of $10 a week was only met about 75% of the time. About 15% of the time we got 1/2 pay and 10% of the time we got no pay. We were told our missing portions of pay would eventually be paid when we were doing better but that turned out to be a complete falsehood. We had a dateline of all back bills which I kept in disbursements and not one dime of missed staff pay was ever even put on the date line to be scheduled to be paid. The think on it was that the staff had not made it go right and pulled in low pay and they should not be rewarded later on by receiving old back pay when the Org was doing well.

Gary, the fact that you received $9.40 a week instead of $10 puzzled me at first but I think I figured it out. I, Lakey, did not start in Treasury until late in 1971 when the pay was $10 a week. Back in 1970 the pay was probably $9.40 a week. It seems to me this other guy who worked in treasury before me, also named Gary, might have the answer to that. Hector Carmona knows him and maybe can set up a meeting between me and the other Gary. From what they tell me, he was pretty good in treasury himself, almost as good as me. He probably left when he heard that Kitty was taking over.
Lakey

You know, I may have been off to the ship very near that time. Certainly I recall half-pay, quarter-pay, and even a few weeks of no-pay; I simply don't recall ever getting a full $10. Truthfully, I figured you were just 'rounding up' to the nearest whole dollar.

Thanks, Lakey, and say "Hi' to Hector for me.

More thoughts on lifestyle choices,,,,,

Carmelo's post in response to my typical day in 1972 post has really set my mind to thinking. All kinds of movement is going on requiring me to "debrief".

I was in the Sea Org and had I described what Carmelo was doing to my Seniors at the time, they would have said, at best, that Carmelo was "off purpose" and at worst, more serious charges would have been leveled against him. Here's the rub, this is what is causing so much internal confusion in me; at the time I would have agreed with them about Carmelo's behavior. I would have dismessed him as totally off purpose. Today, however, I admire greatly what he did and wish I would have been capable of making the same decisions which he made at that time and doing those type of activities myself.

HOW COULD THIS BE?
It seems to me that there are two factors at work. #1 is that every sentient person should enjoy free will and every sentient person needs to decide on their own what kind of life they wish to lead. Carmelo exercised these rights in his life and I did not. I figured that I had been floundering on my own and now LRH was going to choose the proper path for me. This is intrinsicly wrong and such a decision should never be made by anyone! I am stating this as an absolute.

#2 is that the Sea Org was misrepresented as something other than what it was. Had it been what we were told it was, then 38 years later, I might not be regreting having made the wrong choice at a critical juncture, a major fork in the road of life.

The similarities between LRH and the Wizard of Oz are so real. In the movie, people believed with all their hearts and minds that the Wizard had unlimited power and wisdom and it took a young girl from Kansas, her dog and some loser types to unmask the Wizard for what he really was. I believed the dog, Toto pulled on a curtain with his teeth and the fake apparatus which the Wizard used was suddenly revealed to all and the Wizard was exposed as a fake. Still, the Wizard was not totally without some good. He still got Dorothy back to Kansas in a hot air baloon. As men go, he was above average in ability. The parallel to Hubbard being unmasked mainly on the internet is very strong.

Now 38 years after the typical day in 1972, had LRH really have been what he claimed to be and had the Sea Org delivered the goods as promised, I would not be regreting throwing away half my life on something built on false promises.

CHOOSING WHAT ONE IS GOING TO DO WITH ONE'S LIFE AFTER A MAJOR PERSONAL WIN SUCH AS ACHEIVING THE STATE OF "CLEAR" - The next level should concern what Carmelo concerned himself with, without C of S's help. The person needs to work out his or her goals and decide what they want to do. If they choose to join the Sea Org. well then, they have chosen and that is what they should go into. THERE IS ALL THE DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD IN CHOSING THE SEA ORG BY YOURSELF AS OPPOSED TO ALLOWING OTHERS, INCLUDING LRH, TO MAKE THAT CHOICE FOR YOU!!!

I think of my old Sea Org friend Hank Billings, an aeronautical engineer and a pilot who joined the Sea Org and stayed in his entire life, finally dying alone in a small room inside the Fort Harrison. well into his 80's I believe that for the last 30 years of his life he did mainly clerical and courier work. He had no family left and only a few young Sea Org members knew who he was. A relatively able guy, he left no legacy other than perhaps some files being put into alphabetical order. He left no survivors, had no next of kin, etc. His life was lived in anonyimity, he was offered no help at the end but was simply allowed to die in his room.

OTHER GROUPS THAT HAVE DELIVERED ON THEIR PROMISES
I can not think of many. I believe I was involved in a musical troupe on my backtrack in Vienna during the 1780's and 1790's. That one came the closest to being an ideal scene. We wrote and staged operettas, similar to today's muscial comedies, plus we put on serious operas such as "The Magic Flute". It was the troupe of Emmanuel Schikaneder. He had a bit of Hubbard in him. For our spiritual growth, we looked to the Masonic Lodges which were prevalent in Vienna at that time. We were into wine, parties, dance, close comeraderie, sex, fun, getting drunk, plus creating songs, performing songs, living communally near the Theater where we performed and our common bond was music and acting, combined with musical compostion all done within our troupe. When I joined the Sea Org, I had no memories yet of those days but somehow, I figured CCLA would offer many of the same features which that musical troupe offered. At first it did so but in the long run it was nothing like that other 3rd dynamic activity.

A more mainstream activity which seemed to be an ethical group was the revolutionary movement which broke away from England and fought for independence. Washington, Jefferson, Adams, Ben Franklin, Hamilton and that entire crowd were a very good group to hook up with, having some very great thinkers, such as our thread does. I was not a participant there because I was in Vienna at the time but that was one group which exchanged in abundance with those who were a part of it. By the way, our Vienna group took note of what was going on in Revolutionary America. It was the talk of the salons and parlors in late 18th century Europe. The mavericks and free thinkers in Europe had great admiration for what was going on in America and many wrote essays and worked towards bringing those types of freedoms to Europe.

The basic flaw of the Sea Organization seems to be out exchange. They do all the taking from their members and offer nothing in return. An activitiy of that nature doesn't have much of a future but is more just a succession of people routing in and routing out without much stability within the group, even within its management, except for the one dictator who runs the show.

What I was trying to say in the Eight Miles High post was NOT to reexamine your goals. Those goals are positive points that one is striving for. They are part and parcel of a game(s) package. If you leave the game unexamined, as an a priori assumption, then you may not have gotten to a better (spiritual) root driven game.

If you have been a monk, a priest, a minister for lifetimes, then your goals may look like "clear the planet" or some approximation of that.

What i was saying was from a wide perspective, choose the full game. This includes perhaps track for the next ten thousand years. It includes the opponents and opposition. It includes being capable of losing.

No one I know enjoys a game where they always win. Other than as a coaching exercise, would anyone want to play Candyland with a kindergartner? not really, right? -- no challenge. A game must have actual challenges.

At Clear, I hit the end of an old game. I needed to formulate a new game.

We all need games to play, otherwise it gets real dull real fast.

There is a saying, "It is not the destination, but the journey." Once you've reached the destination, you need a new game. requirements for such a game, to my way of thinking, include a very long term game. One that can be played over multitudes of lifetimes. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. You want to define your team(s). I always find a team is better than being individuated. I wouldn't trade places with LRH for all the tea in China. He was definitely a loner.

Like any game, definitions of the boundaries and the scores and penalties need to be made. There are many games to play. Paul, John, George, and Ringo had played the music game for a good long while before this lifetime. Nobody gets that great in one lifetime. Politicians today, were politicians in Rome or Greece. People intrinsically know where their interests lie.

At the moment, Lakey, you are reawakening. You are on a cusp of change on several fronts. Now is a good time to survey your inner space, reflect on your highest aspirations, you most disagreeable qualities, your opponents, your friends, your hobbies, your family, and interests in general. Then define a new game or refine the old one. Once you have the game defined, then you can rebuild your life by being really truly totally on purpose. After that, watch things fall into place more and more.

It is never too late. i would suggest that you view the movie, "Harold and Maude." Colonel Sanders was 69 years old and on welfare when he started KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken). It is only too late if you have decided "It's too late."

I, for one, seem to be using this thread as a bully pulpit from which to push my vision(s) for an ideal scene. Ted's posting of the ideas marketplace fits right in with what I want. I liked the early 70s in Scientology. I think the Gertrude Stein period of salon art was great. Moving picture makers in the 20th century had a great game. There was a golden age of radio.

I can't wait to see the golden age of education. It is surely coming. Once you define your game , then you can create it. Without a game defined, you are at the whim of chance.

further post mortem

My girl friend from the early 70s is my friend. She has always been my friend, and will always be my friend. One morning, we were driving up to the San Francisco Org from Palo Alto, when James Taylor came on the radio.

Just now, after I found the above link, I e mailed the link to her.

We are friends. the song and the memories makes me cry (right this very second). not grief. just depth of connectedness and love.

That memory of the song playing and the certitude of oneness between us, I'll always remember.

Know your friends. Don't lose them. Don't short them.

My best-est friends, in no particular order, include my wife,

Thanks for sharing more of your life Carmelo. It sounds like you had so much fun.

How does one define their game?

this is a listing question, so watch yourself

define the word "game"

What game are you playing?

(this can be dynamite)

If you understand "game" there are known opponents, playing field, positive scores, penalties, your identity in the game, teammates, and much more.

We could be prosaic and say someone is playing the game of 1950s housewife. She would dress appropriately, please her husband, get her hair done, keep the kids in control, etc. If she was losing at the game, she might be drinking a few too many at lunch.

We could say the game of "messiah" There have been a number of people who tried out for this game. You can name them, as well as I. How did they do?

To define your game you need to know where your goal posts are located. Did you score when you helped someone? Or did you score when you put order into chaos. Perhaps when you read a book and learned to apply something that you read.

The game flows from your personal primal dichotomy. If you value knowledge over stupidity the highest, that would be a primary dichotomy. Or love over individuation or order over chaos.

What are you trying to accomplish in your game?

If anyone winds up in a mess because of this post, please PM me, and we'll fix you up.

From the overall picture of the game, then you fill in milestones and wins and losses.

Remember, it is the journey, not the destination.

A good game lasts for millennia.

This lifetime games last only for this lifetime. Find the bigger picture, then re create the smaller foci.

Lakey,

You didn’t do anything wrong re: the SO. I t was just part of your path. Often, IMO, our paths are not manifest and, often, are not well lit, nor marked.

There is no one but you that could have created this thread…and you would not be here with all of us, for all of us, as you are, at this moment in time, if you had not walked your path.:coolwink:

There exist not the words with which I can thank you properly.

I meant a "Golden Age" for being in Scientology, relatively speaking. I have no desire to go back into Scn. I'm doing quite OK right now, oldest has graduated college and is going to grad school.

re: golden age of education, it's happening behind the scenes. We homeschool, and there are more and more resources coming available.

Hello all,

After several days of lurking and reading, I've finally reached 'PT' on this thread. I began reading it because, as a long-time scientologist, I had some interest in "The old days" and, having never been on the Apollo, was curious.

Then I learned the thread originator, Lakey, had been at CC while I was staff there and I became even more interested as that story began to unfold. As Lakey named names from the 'old days' at CC, I was reminded of people that I hadn't thought of in decades.

And, like Topsy, the thread just grew. Perhaps unlike Topsy, the thread grew on me. It somehow became important to see who else would post, what new information would be presented, what additional viewpoint would be revealed.

I was often tempted to post in response to one comment or another but I realized that post would appear -- way 'up' the track -- and would likely be 'stale-dated' to everyone's eyes but mine. Instead of posting, I PM'd a few people and discovered that there were several here whom I already knew and was currently or had been in comm with. Cool!

I post 'uncovered' as I never even approached the confidential levels nor have I held a post so sensitive that I could reasonably expect to be a worthwhile target of the Church. I am "too little," I think, to be worth the trouble, especially given what's already out there to trouble them.

I'll keep this thread on my "must read" list until it burns out or I do. :) Will likely chime in from time to time, if and when I believe I've something worthwhile to contribute.

Before I go, I have one observation re. the comments about Bashers. I believe there are only a few types: those who've never been 'in' and those who were in but never had case gain or who, for any of a multitude of possible reasons, have chosen to 'not is' those gains. "Make less of," perhaps.

Without personal experience of the gains possible from the application of scientology tech, we who claim those gains must appear as self-deluded as the 'victims' of any other cult. "Wake UP!" "Get real!" "Get over it!" What the bashers fail to comprehend is that -- something happened to us that was too extra-ordinary to "get over."

Our lives were fundamentally changed in some aspect which we identify as positive and very worthwhile. You don't, "get over" that. Even as we recognize the aspects in which we were conned or deluded (and boy, can that take some doing) we yet refuse to "throw the baby out with the bathwater." Something happened; something marvelous. And we refuse to deny that even while we may be unable to explain it or adequately communicate it.

It appears that some, perhaps a small, part of the Freezone tends knowingly or unknowingly to perpetuate a fraud. Bad cess on that.

More often, I think, we are trying to sort out what worked, what did not, and why.

It remains possible that, perhaps many years from now, we will learn that all 'phenomena' which we consider extraordinary has a perfectly ordinary, non-spiritual, explanation and can be produced at will by physicists, psychologists, and the like. If that happens and that constitutes the truth, I like to believe I'd buy that.

Until then, most of us, one time or another, answered affirmatively a statement that read something like, "Would you like for others to achieve the same gains you have made?" Well yeah. Still would. And still, I hope to make more.

Best regards,

G.

Thank you, Face.

I did feel like I was voicing what many of us felt and explaining why 'bashers' were unlikely to understand. You give a hell of a good ack. Good to be duplicated.

I read your initial posts with strong interest and more than a little curiosity. I fondly supposed that the delay between 'episodes' was a clever device to build or sustain that interest.

Later, when you revealed the barriers you had and were daily overcoming to post at all, my admiration soared. THAT, by god, is O.T., whether that ability (and determination) to overcome obstacles was grounded in Ron's tech or not.

It makes the petty obstacles facing me look like railroad tracks. Lasting thanks for sharing your situation and I look forward to seeing your comments.

Best,

G.

Thank you for your kind words.

I read this thread from the beginning for months before I posted here.:melodramatic:

There is no "Ron's Tech" IMO. There are many wonderful mysteries to Life and Living that, to me, each one of Us is a piece to the puzzle. El Ron was provided with and given many pieces that he tried to force into place…some of those pieces helped greatly, while some of Hisselfs "construct" actually made my journey more perilous…I won’t dwell on that here and now.

I don't consider that I am here now, as I am now, because of my "OTness"...whatever that is.:confused2:

My Life and Living is because of those that cared for me, watched out for me and, regardless what came, would not turn their back to me, abandon me when I was "nothing". That is a "debt" I can never repay and, for which, those others never thought for a moment of marking in a "ledger".

That is why I believe, unshakably, in all of Us that know we have have "debts" we can never repay and, incumbent for our "Thank You" and "Appreciation" is Us, going forward truly Living without "ledger".:coolwink:

So glad you decided to join Us all here.

Face:)
