Good find Maria. They did this one as well;

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9SqQNgDrgg

The text for the skit you posted was prominently displayed in the graduate student lounge, taped to the back of the door.

Descartes' lines are particularly hilarious. THANK YOU for finding this. I had only read the script and had never SEEN the skit!!!!

Hilarious!!

I love it!!!

Again I must list my favorite philosophers:

Socrates-Plato, Plotinus (NeoPlatonist), Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Heidegger, Deleuze.

I had to leave a lot of things I really enjoy OUT from that list.

Now what is interesting, and I wish something CoS could take to heart about its exes, is that I don't agree with ANY of these 100%. At All. In fact, sometimes their philosophies are entirely opposed to each other! And to my own view! But everyone on the list was in dialogue with Socrates-Plato. And all are revered in philosophy generally. It's not black and white and we don't have to decide who 'wins'.

When I type Socrates-Plato, it's because we don't know how much Plato rewrote Socrates to his own ideology, much as DM might rewrite Hubbard. This is how it is with students and teachers. LOL. Socrates is suspected to be the sophist of the two. Plato is suspected to be the more dogmatic of the two. But no one knows so when I use the word Plato I may as well use the word "Socrates".

Heideggerians and Deleuzians are in a way mortal enemies. LOL. But I love them both. Deleuze is accused of being a metaphysician. However, he is a very weird one if so. His big book was "A Thousand Plateaus." He also wrote a big critique of both Marx and Freud/Lacan/Psychoanalysis in general called "Anti-Oedipus." It is a hard read and a huge critique of consciousness track philosophies in general. I would have to give up being a Nietzschean and Deleuzian and a Platonist in order to believe in the tech. Not realistic.

I am sure my reactions to Scientology are really founded in my deep connection with the above list. As I said, I am a squirrel group with one member - the group called PHI Squirrels (Not FZ or Indie).

But that is a misnomer, since of course Scn is really the squirrel group - the above philosophers came before Scn. And nothing in Scientology was particularly bright in comparison with any of these. Sort of average whatever, in my view. Oh perhaps there are interesting innovations in Scn. But I won't say what I think they are....hm. Anyway, I was just horsing around.

Re: The old days - Aboard the Apollo - 1973

As I said in an early post, philosophers accept a genealogical structure. Whoever are my influences are my parents. Such that there is a tree. I bet one could find some of these on google. There was one a student made in the graduate lounge.

So each thinker, you, me, anyone, has a branch to which they belong, off that tree. Some branches are more revered, famous, accepted. Some are sort of in the back, in the garage [in analogy, like a garage band]. Scn is sort of fringe on that tree. A suspect branch at least that has no impact on the history of philosophy to mention.

Oh! I just thought of something neat.

A way to think of philosophers and what they do.

Philosophy is an eristic (think gymnastic) and agonistic (argumentative) SPORT. It is FUN.

When someone studies philosophy it is akin to learning chess or wrestling. One learns the moves and plays.

One also studies the History of Philosophy and learns all the plays that are important in the history of philosophy.

So it's not only learning to philosophize but also learning all the attempts to philosophize (studying the games played by the masters).

The history of philosophy allows on to play very well. :)

Not all students in philosophy specialize in both of those. I happen to have specialized in history of philosophy and when I was working, it was what I taught.
I used to mostly teach my students: how to argue, how to read the argument of others and zero in on it, and how to do that in context of the history of philosophy.

That is war strategy: to see all the philosophical arguments is a cool thing. I tried to show that to my students so they could learn to make their own arguments.

I would debate them, destroy them, and they loved it and worked hard to counter me. They learned a lot doing that.

It was SO MUCH MORE fun than bullbaiting or TRs.

In fact, it is TRs at mach 10!!!!

Cat's that middle ear issue seems to have subsided now. It has to do with rain. I am a great douser. If it ever ever going to rain, I immediately get slightly dizzy and need to sit down. A few minutes later : rain.

Sounds very unpleasant Maria. Is there no treatment for that, or have you thought of moving to a drier part of the country?

I'd have to move. The doctor indicated it has no particular cause. Apparently in older people little sediments or calcifications (tiny rocks, artifacts?) form in the inner ear. These can in turn get infected when one is congested. It is vertigo. So for days it was raining and as it rained the room on occasion would spin.

I was offered drugs a few years back but since it only happens during rainy seasons, once or twice a year, and I don't care for drugs, I just ignored that.

For possible infection I just use a dropper with food grade hydrogen peroxide. It's AMAZING is all I can say. If I had done this regularly I might have avoided this bout. But I was distracted and forgot to do the drops.
As it is, it lasted for about 4 days. Today it is very slight and just about gone. Sure hope the rain stays away.

Anyway, this is my only known health issue and thank goodness it is seasonal.

Well that's something.

I googled for the hydrogen peroxide remedy and according to this site (I don't know how legit it is) it's even claimed it can cure colds and the 'flu;

Thank you.

All I know is that I put about a 1/4 dropper of the food grade in my year prophylactically, maybe every other week. It bubbles as I lie on the side so it doesn't spill out, maybe 10 minutes. Then I do the other ear. I had lapsed on that activity recently, and then here is the result. For 5 years I had no vertigo as long as I was doing this, to sort of clean my ear. But I grew lax because I forgot I had the problem. So now I'll start over.

Thank you for the links. I had no idea that this was good for other things....but for me, and this issue, it seems to help a lot.

Since the doctor told me there is no remedy [just take an anti-dizzy pill] then I assume my use of the Hydrogen Peroxide on my own doesn't clash with any best practices the medical establishment might endorse. It's a sort of black hole issue. Anyway, I went five years perfect with just my own remedy and no drugs. Just have to remember to stick with it at certain times of the year when it is rainy.

I get ear wax buildup if I don't use peroxide semi regularly in the fashion you describe. No vertigo but an annoying set of frequency dropouts. I suppose wax could mess with your inner ear balance and cause vertigo. It just doesn't happen to me.

Well when I said what I did to Roger, ITYIWT, PMed me with a complimentary post and we dialogued for a while and then she moved on. You will find her often on the Hell of a Hoax side of ESMB. She used to be a big fan of his and others of his ilk. I lost touch with her at least 2 1/2 years ago. She is a very nice person.

Just to make things crystal clear, you were PM'ing me ... and I was trying to put a stop to it ... politely.

Many years ago (when Roger was still the Messiah) if anyone on this thread actually ceased sycophantically grovelling and stood up to him instead, I automatically did a triple somersault (sometimes with pike) and cheered ... I may have issues (lol) but I'm always upfront.

I don't believe it's healthy to replace one guru with another and it says very little for the "tek" if there's a need to.

No need to respond, I won't be bothering you again unless you mention my name and distort things.

Enjoy "your" thread.

Re: The old days - Aboard the Apollo - 1973

Amazon has some inexpensive food grade Hydrogen Peroxide. That article you linked Cats seems to say to use any. For some reason since I tend to be non-GMO and organic about everything, I decided to go with food grade instead.

http://www.amazon.com/Food-Grade-Hy...sr=8-12&keywords=food+grade+hydrogen+peroxide

This is the kind I have. Other kinds may be better.....I liked this one. I put it into a small bottle with a dropper on it and use it via the dropper.

Different hydrogen peroxides have different percentage strengths. Based on having checked around I settled on the one above for myself, which was not the weakest and not the strongest.

I didn't know it worked for that.

I do know someone who uses it for mouth hygiene but I never have....maybe because I have never had issues with teeth so I have been fortunate to be able to do the minimum there.

One response, you PMed me first and thanked me for standing up to Roger. That was your triple somersault. Of course I PMed you back. Your nonsense about trying to put a stop to it does not make any sense. Look, the way you stop someone from PMing you is to not respond to their PM. There is no trying to stop it!! you either PM back or you don't. If you don't then the cycled is immediately stopped.

You replied to me once or twice and then you stopped replying. Our communication ended at that point, you did not have to try anything further.

Oh please, not this discussion again. Mercola is a quack, a charlatan, a danger even for healthy people, should they fall for his quackery.

Re: The old days - Aboard the Apollo - 1973

The thing about old Keef (and Lennon and Clapton too for that matter) is that he was not proper junkie. Proper junkies do all the tying up shit and stick the works in a vein (if they can find one), but Richards, Lennon and Clapton (I was disappointed to learn) were just 'snorters' with smack, and any fool can do that, even me.

Then take ex scientologist William Burroughs, now he was a proper junkie. :coolwink:

Interesting about Burroughs, he was self professed Gay along with Ginsberg and Kerouac being Beat nicks. But, then again he meant gay as in the original pre 80s definition as happy care free. Burrows, from what my barber said he was heir to the Burrows Calculator fortune.

I was in Golden Gate Park in 1968 when the Haight was thriving and some one told me about Ginsberg or Kerouac doing the Great Banana Sermon about Buddhism.

The sermon was short and pantomime. You take out a Banana and look at it quizzically. You peel the banana, then you gaze at the fruit and gaze at the peel. Then you have a epiphany, throw the peel away and eat the banana.

End of sermon.

Bless you as you depart this holy place.

Namaste :)
