The Church - a short story set in the near future

... With no organisation left powerful enough to stop them, the entire planet could come under the Church’s control. The worst dark age of suppression and tyranny that any religion could even dream up would ensue.
...

I'm reading Orwell's book 1984 and it's a really interesting look at what a world ruled by CoS may be like.

I find many similarities:
Psychopolice -->ethics, knowledge reports
2 minutes of hate --> IAS events
rewriting history --> Ron's mags
controlled information --> events
:duh:

"Did you ever read poor old George Orwell's uh...1984? Yes, yes, that's wonderful. That would be, could be, the palest imagined shadow of what a world would be like under the rule of the secret use of Scientology..." --LRH, PDC 20, unedited version.

George Orwells

You know, that reminds me of the story of Leiah. A young girl who was just 20 years old. A truly classic beauty. She had large brown eyes and shocking masses of rich brown curls framing her face. A light olive complexion with that certain rosy glow showing perfect health. A curvaceous and full rounded figure that would have shamed any high fashion model of the day.

Her obvious ‘head turning’ beauty and excellent health – the very flower of womanhood – was the reason she was chosen as one of the volunteers for the cryogenic testing vats on Earth prior to the launch of the ARKship-1.

Leiah’s sleeping form was shown naked. With carefully placed holding straps, that whilst protecting her modesty, did not leave too much to the imagination. Her image was plastered on every promo piece, the front covers of org magazines and all press releases. Little comment or pictures were made of the other four sleepers, 2 men and 2 women.

She was heralded as a hero of the people and the Church. The perfect celebrity. Completely silent and always available. A celebrity that didn’t age and always looked her best. No possibility of misbehavior nor misdemeanor. Neither could she say anything unplanned or untoward to the press or anyone else for that matter.

New HCOBs had been released at massive events held at the Hollywood bowl and Wembley Stadium. They announced the new scientific breakthroughs that were being used to perfect the cryogenic freezing techniques.

A highly trained team of biologists and chemists, using the HCOBs, of course, developed the correct mixture of nutrients, supplements and chemicals required to successfully freeze and unfreeze the bodies without causing damage to the cellular structure.

It was announced that these notes were gathered up from the handwritten volumes left by the Founder. Notes that he had bequeathed to mankind before he had to leave to do his very important research without the encumbrance of a body. In fact, there were so many of these hurriedly scribbled down instructions that management still hadn’t finished sorting, editing and getting them ready for issue.

The date of Lieah’s proposed revival had never been released. Staff members and the general public never questioned the good judgment of the management and didn’t ask.

Critics, led by vicious SPs, said the reason the revival date had never been released was pretty obvious: Management would have her revived in secret with as few people present as possible. If she was revived healthy and without damage, it would be announced as a glorious success - a tribute to the wisdom of the Founder. If she was not healthy and did suffer any damage, they could simply re-freeze her indefinitely. In time, she and the others, would be forgotten about.

The HCOBs would be cancelled, the SPs who had issued their own squirrel tech using the founder’s name would be declared. The staff connected to the project off-loaded, demoted, RPFed, declared or whatever. All previous articles and references to her and the project deleted. If it’s not written, it isn’t true. Memories are short and SPs are cleverly hiding everywhere, as yet undected.

After 7 long years the Church realised that it squeezed all possible news worthiness out of the story. All the possible photo ops had been exhausted. It was time to try and revive Lieah and hopefully several more years of great PR out of the story.
The other four ‘sleepers’ would remain in storage for future PR use.

Lieah was awake and well. A Sea Org member and sincere advocate of the tenants of the Church. She had been willing to sacrifice up one of her many lives in order to forward the purpose of clearing this planet and the next. She was a front line success story, all round idol and major celebrity.

During the years that Lieah slept in cold storage much had changed in the Church.

But man, that is another story that takes considerable confront and a strong stomach to tell.

Mary.

You are most gracious Bea. I really appreciate your acknowledgement.

But you really shouldn't encourage me - I get carried away, and then there'll be trouble afoot!

Alanzo, I apologise for not answering your earlier communication. So this one is for you. Please don't hit me, OK?

There is so much to tell you about the events that occurred during first few weeks after Lieah was revived. It all seemed to rush past in such a whirl. Every waking moment was spent reading prepared speeches for the press, interviews on TV and radio. Numerous visits to schools and colleges.

She was continuously paraded on stage in full dress uniform with glittering gold braid at every major event. She was invited to movie premiers along with other celebrity members of the Church. A dress designer had been specially appointed to her to ensure that her attire was appropriate and commented on in the fashion magazines. No expense had been spared for her attire, fancy transportation and generous living accommodations.

She had become the ‘darling’ the ‘princess Di’ of the people. Adored by all and looked upon in awe by the staff and public. She was the ‘ideal’ Sea Org member and now she was featured in most all recruitment promo - implying that with hard work and dedication any Sea Org member could have all the respect and the luxuries that Lieah had earned.

Lieah had once made an impromptu comment on a TV interview. A comment that was not on the prepared speech or any part of the rehearsed answers. The interviewer had asked:

“Do you think that the Church has changed at all since you last saw it seven years ago?”

“Crickey, yes! The Sea Org and staff’s working conditions have vastly improved. . .” She was going to enthusiastically say more but her prompter (at the side of the stage) was making frantic motions of cutting her throat and waving her arms around and pointing at the prepared answer sheet.

A few weeks after her revival an odd incident occurred that strangely was to mark the beginning of the end. It happened while she was being escorted around by top executives. The visit today was of the renovations to the New Fort Harrison Hotel building. The entire top floor was an enlarged replica of the famous Crystal Ball Room. It had a very high ceiling with many chandeliers. A balconied mezzanine that went all the way around from where you watch everything happening on the floor below. It had been used for formal balls and weddings since the 1920s.

The oval shaped dance floor was a highly polished hardwood. Some dust sheets had been placed over parts of the floor and a three man team were working on the opulent gold leaf patterned columns that held up the mezzanine.

One of the workmen just happened to be Alan Zoë. He had been in the Sea Org for all of eight years now. He had seen Lieah in person only once – it was the same day that she had signed her Sea Org contract.

For several months (up to that moment) he had had private thoughts to get the hell out of this insanity. But for some strange reason, after being almost knocked over by her as she was running up the stairs, all excited and flushed with a routing form in her hand, he quelled those thoughts with a higher postulate – he didn’t really admit to himself what that postulate actually was, except that it did have something to do this perfectly gorgeous young girl.

When he had heard about Lieah’s assignment for the cryogenic project, his heart sank, but through sheer stubbornness or perhaps utter stupidity, he grit his teeth and hung on, and on, and on, for seven long gruelling years.

The few things that got him through all the dismal conditions, the heavy ethics and the abject poverty was the sense of comradeship with his fellow officers and his sense of grim gallows humour.

He had been nicknamed “El Zorro”. To get even with this nickname, he had been known to dress up in a black cape, a round Spanish hat and a black eye mask. Jumping out from behind a wall or desk to confront some unsuspecting staff member and begin waving a ruler around as a dueling sword.

Only once did he get the “jokers and degraders” bulletin thrust at him – but he was very upstat at the time and no action was taken.

Alan caught a glimpse of the execs and the object they had in toe – it was Lieah. His heart missed several beats before he gained his composure.

The earlier higher postulate, made all those years ago, reared its ugly head. He knew he had to do something, right now. She would be in his vicinity for only a few seconds. Here was a very slender, very thin sliver of an opportunity – he had to think of something really quick – uggh! But what?

Lieah was marvelling at the richly curtained arched windows with their fabulous views over the bay.

“Gosh! It’s so lovely and ...weee...aahhh!!” Lieah was saying as her foot stepped ever so daintily on one of the very clean dust-sheets that was covering the highly polished floor and she went flying, landing on her bottom with a thump.

From behind one of the columns there suddenly appeared a caped figure in a round black hat and an eye mask. He had rushed over to her before the execs had even had a chance to figure out what had happened.

“Have no fear, “El Zorro” is here. Madam.” With a flourish, he offered her his hand to help her up.

“Why thank you, kind Sir.” Said Leiah giggling and smoothing down her skirt as she stood up.

The execs, by this time had gathered around and were anxiously inspecting whether any damage had been done to their charge. After seeing that all was well with her, they accepted in relatively good humour the practical joke being played by Alan.

Alan continued the act by removing his hat and making round motions with it while bowing. He then made as if to kiss her on the cheek using the hat to cover the view.

Instead of a kiss, he whispered in her ear in deadly serious earnest.

“Barbie doll. Look at what actually is, not at what they want you to see.”

The tour of the building continued without further incident, but Lieah could not stop thinking about what “El Zorro” had said. What on earth did he mean? “Look at what is”? Why did he call me Barbie doll?”

The next day her dress designer was fitting her for a new gown for an IAS dinner event. The dress seemed a bit garish and overly done with large bows. She turned to look at herself in the mirror.

The memory of a song from years ago came back to her.

“I'm a Barbie girl in a Barbie world
Life in plastic, it's fantastic
You can brush my hair, undress me everywhere
Imagination, life is your creation

Come on Barbie, let's go party!

I'm a blond bimbo girl in a fantasy world
Dress me up, make it tight, I'm your dollie
You're my doll, rock'n'roll, feel the glamouring and pain

Make me walk, make me talk, do whatever you please
I can act like a star, I can beg on my knees
Come jump in, be my friend, let us do it again
Hit the town, fool around, let's go party”

Wonderful! - I like it! :D - Though I did have to use some force on myself to 'suspend disbelief'. I can see the 'founder' making himself an expert on cryogenics, but his 'advice' actually working!!?

Uhm.. With OSA in the game too I suppose... They probably found a Lieah lookalike when the real Lieah turned liquid on thawing. The programme name would be 'Operation Corpsicle'

:D

Well, yeah! I found it hard to swallow all that bul...er, cow's manure, about the founder's volumous handwritten notes written about every topic under the sun, that were hurriedly scribbled before he left - some 50 years later and still not sorted?

The tech on freezing living organisms and cells is fairly well understood even today. I understand that there are many creatures, such as some shrimps, fish and frogs that regularly freeze rock solid in the very cold climates. Apparently their cells can produce a substance (a bit like anti-freeze) that allows them to thaw from the inside out, allowing the heart to start pumping blood gradiently and without causing damage to the cell walls.

Whether or not the handwritten notes left by the founder for later issue is true or not - Christ knows what will happen when they try to revive the other four that were frozen for longer time periods. It could well be "operation corpsicles"!

Really though, what will Scn become in the future?

Will the official CofS actually become a major recognised religion? Would it eventually take over the governments of some countries? If so, what would it be like to live in one of those societies?

If governments are run like org boards, would any attempt to ask for democracy be countered with a cramming cycle of KSW1.

With schools and colleges having a curriculum tailored to suit the CofS, how would history be taught? Would children be taught to look for themselves or only to seek answers from the authorised texts?

Would the universities be allowed to research into the sciences? What about the new scientific breakthroughs that didn’t match the Founders ideas?

How would the Church actually handle the serial killers, armed robbers and the like? What about the insane? The homosexuals? The ones still loyal to another religion? The ones who believe in another political regime? The dissenters and rebels; the ones who will not toe the party line? The ones who simply question the authority of the Church? The ones who goof up and cannot be corrected? The plain stupid ones? Would they all be lumped together equally – all declared SPs. (Would this list be extended for PR reasons to include the ugly ones who don’t look so good?)

The people who are sick or disabled and cannot contribute, cannot work or get in their exchange – What kind of health service could be run on standard Church policy?

Really, where would the Church put these people?

The arts, movies; what kind of censorship would the Church impose.

Would humour be reduced to the level of inoffensive old jokes like: “What time is it when an elephant sits on a fence?” or “Why did the little boy throw the clock out of the window?” Would any amount of irony or satire be deemed to enturbulate or be classified as Joking and degrading?

What would these CofS countries’ relationships be like with the other nations of the world?

In other countries, other places, researches using the scientific method of tried, tested, thoroughly proved and verified by others, may develop new spiritual technology and ways to enhance mankind’s abilities. Will the CofS scream squirrel tech and off-beat practices?

The imagination runs riot. An entire book could be written on this; a film would be fun to watch! Mind boggling, isn’t it?

Scientology Suicide Bomber Attacks Vatican

I don't think $cn has much of a chance of achieving "maintstream" status, particularly as the rest of the world moves on from the 50s world which is the home of Hubbardian ideas.

Hell, I don't even know what a DC-10 looks like. I know "science" is its own religion, dogmatically clinging to ideas that will hold no weight in the future, but even so, it moves forward much faster than the bogged down doctrine of the "church" will ever allow.

Well, to be pedantic, Hubbard mentions DC-8s, not 10s, which is itself a bit of an out-point, since he says the 'space planes' looked just like DC-8s, but without propellors.

But, DC-8s were early *jets* and never had propellors.

Mary, I love your posts!

It reminded me that restaurants and shops owned by scientologist actually refuse to service SPs.
http://www.sptimes.com/News/092301/NorthPinellas/Scientologist_merchan.shtml

So SPs will eventually starve to death in a Scientology ruled world. :omg:

Did you read 'Scientology with(out) an end' by Tom Voltz? There is a chapter titled 'SCIENTOLOGY OR DEMOCRACY?' that quotes HCOPLs on the subject and looks into your same questions.

Democracy is about choice (even if severely limited choice). If you wish to exercise your choice to experience a totalitarian 1984 style government, go join the Sea Org.

Your right. I first read 1984 when I about 12 years old - it completely changed my view of the world. Ironic that I decided very firmly that I would do all I could to prevent that type of society from developing.

Then as I became more familiar with Int Management, I kept seeing shades of 1984 and little indicators. When I started doing the Data Series drills and the Org Exec Course it was becoming more and more obvious. The policies I was reading the in the OEC seemed far removed from what I observed to be actual practice.

Doing these drills at a class IV org, I would go into an area with a clip board and ask questions of staff and look at stats and stuff - I kept seeing "fear" in their eyes. Real fear, a terrible worry that I would write them up for some imagined wrong, or that I'd get them into trouble for not applying policy to their post or for being downstat. Even though I kept trying to assure them I was only doing a drill and I wasn't going to report anything to anyone. I'm really quite a friendly, polite, unassuming person (honest!). I'm not in least bit overbearing and I've never written anyone up to ethics for anything.

Then I observed several other Execs and Missionaires from Flag doing actual inspections. They would walk around in full dress uniform, looking very stern and be positively unfriendly, taking notes on clipboards without telling the staff what they were writing. No discussion, no well dones, no smiles or any appreciation of the work. They produced that same look of fear.

The last straw came when I gave a win at graduation. One of the main points I told them was that one could take over and run the planet with this tech. I faltered in my speech as I noticed that "look" on some of the faces. I realised what the full implications were of what I was saying and that I was not the only one there that could visualise what the world might be like if it was run by Int Management.

Congratulations. I've met any number of Scientologists at many levels of involvement who have read 1984 yet, somehow, never recognize the theme in their own life.

That recognition *is* freedom to say that 2+2=4

Past Lives

It seems to be a taboo subject to talk about or mention things one recalls from past lives. Maybe there is a good reason for this - I don't know. So I’ll put it on this thread and call it fiction, to be on the safe side.

Personally, I'm always fascinated to hear stories or recalls from a person's past life, even if they don't have too much certainty on whether or not it's true.

It is possible that I have a wild imagination and even more probable that I'm delusional, but I do recall several events from different lifetimes. I'm not referring to items run in auditing sessions, just remembering other times and other places.

Particularly I'm always keen to find examples of past life memories that can be looked up in historical records and possibly verified.

A sort of example from this lifetime:

I had always felt a bit of an antipathy towards the French language. I thought I knew absolutely nothing about it and had quite some trouble confronting learning it. Then the time came when I had to, by the necessity of having to driving through the blimin’ country, actually learn some words and phrases just to get by.

As I began to overcome my distaste for some of the impossible pronunciations and odd contractions, I got this really strange idea that I knew many of these words and phrases. Then after a while new words and even sentences starting popping into my head that I had not studied at all. It seemed really weird and what was worse, I disagreed with the pronunciation guide given in the book.

When I was very little, too young for me to remember, I lived with my parents in an African country. I found out later that the lady who looked after me a few years during part of the day only spoke the official language – which to my surprise was French.

Apparently, I had learned the language. Then moving to a new country and losing all the memories and associators and not hearing spoken French again, I believed that I couldn’t speak it.

Another sort of example from this lifetime:

During my teenage years, a friend of mine told me very excitedly that she had met a boy that she believed was just perfect for me. She really went on and on saying that I just had to meet him, that we would get along amazingly well, we were so alike. She absolutely insisted that I go on a blind date with him. After much persuasion, I eventually agreed and reluctantly went along to this blind date. I was certain would be an absolute disaster, considering her taste in boys was not my idea of handsome!

From the moment we met, we couldn’t take our eyes of each other. There was this amazing rapport and understanding of each other. We became the best of friends immediately. Very strange.

After we had been going out together for about 4 months or so, we got to talking about our childhood. He told me that his father had been murdered in a pub in London when he was a child. I mentioned to him that my best friend when I was a child had suffered a similar loss.

Then he told me he lived in the East End of London when he was child. I said, ‘Huh, so did I!’ He told me that he had lived in a particular Street. I said ‘Wow, so did I!’ He told the name of the tenement block where he had lived. My eyes widened and I said ‘So did I!’

He peered intently into my eyes and suddenly realised that I was the very same ‘best friend’ who he had played with every day until she had moved.

Neither of us had remembered their childhood friend or recognised who the other was, yet there was an instant bond on meeting.

Yet another example – hope I’m not boring you.

The year was 1999 and December was fast approaching. All my life I remember daydreaming about the last days of the century and what the future might be like, what fabulous discoveries about our world and the sciences would be made, what new and wondrous inventions would transform our daily lives.

For years and years I had always felt that I had an appointment to be somewhere on the last hour of the last day of December of 1999. The place was very specific; Times Square, New York. What I had to wear was also very specific; A large brimmed round hat, a bright yellow scarf around my neck and a pink carnation pinned to my lapel. And, I was to bring a large white note. It was a strange idea, that grew with detail and persistence as the years rolled by.

From another life:

Joshua was someone whose company I thoroughly enjoyed. He was an oversized young man with a constantly oversized smile. I think he was able to get away with many transgressions and blatant insouciance because of the warmth of his smile and his graciously accepting demeanor. I was in awe of him and loved to listen to his funny stories and positively tall tales.

I was quite different in character, quiet, studious and carefully obedient to all the do’s and don’ts. It seemed that I never got away with even a misplaced comma.

We shared digs together in a rather bedraggled and leaky and damp cottage in a very glum and straight laced village close to the Welsh border.

We both attended classes at the seminary college for the Church of the Latter Day Saints. After our training, we were to be sent out as missionaries to the far reaches of the earth, such exotic places as Malaysia or the Wilds of Borneo or perhaps the middle of the Congo, or worse, as Joshua often joked, Cardiff Central.

One time, one of our more bible thumping and somewhat bigoted tutors was carefully explaining to us the import of our mission and of our responsibility to convert as many souls as possible to the one and only true religion. All those that we did not win over for God would be damned to hell for all eternity.

Joshua raised a hand and said: “Actually, it turns out that the little known tribe of the Muabi-Kubla in the heart of the Rwanda Valley in Africa, there's about 40 of them left, did already find the one and only true religion. Unfortunately for us, their talents as missionaries was sorely lacking, and as a result, it is we that are all damned to hell.”

Joshua and I had many long evenings sitting by the warm fireplace engaged in heated discussions about theology and what our missions to far off places might be like. In his effervescent and ever unceasing jocular manner, his views appeared to be very much at odds with what we were studying. I would desperately try to ague some logical reasoning and uphold our Church’s belief system.

One such evening, Joshua was expanding on one of his rather taller tales. He told of his journey to the Far East and that he had been introduced to a man who claimed to be the third re-incarnation of the Dalai Lama. Our discussion progressed to the subject of death and re-birth in another human form on Earth. Joshua was convinced that the Dalai Lama was telling the truth. Obviously, I took the stand that there was no such thing and proceeded to find references from the bible to prove it.

Joshua however kept asking questions which became increasingly difficult to counter with the reasoning given by the Church or the Holy Book and we were laughing and laughing over the sillinesses that each one had to come up with to defend our positions. Neither of us had won the argument and the debate had descended into inanities.

“I’ll make you a wager.” Said Joshua. “I’ll wager you a full year’s allowance that re-incarnation is true and actual!”

“And how, may I ask would you prove your point and collect on such?” I replied.

“Do you grant that our mortal bodies will not likely live to the see beginning of the next millennium?” Asked Joshua.

“Of course, that would be 90 years away.” I replied.

“Very well then. In the year of our Lord, one thousand, nine hundred and ninety nine, in the month of December, the day of the 31st and on the final hour of that day, we will arrange to meet at a designated place, say a land mark that will likely still be there and is well known.” Said Joshua.

“Why don’t we make our meeting in the New World, New York, Times Square. I fancy it should still be rather fashionable.” I said still laughing.

“Now, you’ll need to be wearing something that I’ll be able to recognise, for example a pink carnation in your lapel. Perhaps you could sport that broad rimmed round hat and that horribly ugly, bright yellow scarf, not too many of those around.” Said Joshua pointing to my hat and scarf hanging on the hat stand by the doorway.

“I’ll take you up on your wager. You have my word that if after my death I suddenly find myself in a new body, I will know that you were right all along and I will endeavour to meet with you at the arranged place and time, wearing all the items you mentioned and I will gladly hand over to you your winnings.

Good lord man, if this so-called re-incarnation is true; I could have the body of a woman, heaven forbid! I could be in the body of a small child or be too poor to afford travel.” I said.

“Well in that case you get to keep the fiver! Said Joshua, by this time doubled up with laughter.

Funny enough, I did some checking on the web and did find that there really was (still is, I think) a Church of the Latter Day Saints (Mormon) at that place. And a five pound note in those days was white and large.

I wish I could have gone to Times Square to meet him. I’ll bet anything that if he had any means to get there he would have been there. I surely would have recognised him by his smile, if nothing else.

In our jest, we made up something so very impractical, almost impossible to complete. We could not have imagined what Times Square was to become and just how many people might be there on that day. We certainly never imagined that five pounds, a whole year’s allowance, would now not even buy you lunch.

In any case, Joshua, if you ever read this. I think you were right about re-incarnation and I do still owe you that five pound note.

I just saw two episodes from a pastlife documentary made by the Austrian TV channel ATV. Two Austrian people first underwent pastlife regression, and then the TV crew travelled to the places with them that they had seen during the regression. Both found exactly what they had described in session, down to the smallest details, plus or minus changes that had happened during 100 (in one case) or 200 (in the other case) years of time. One location was a blacksmith's workshop in a little village in the far western mountains of Austria - it came complete with images of a church, a chapel, a lake and a guesthouse that were all verified -, the other one in a city in France that came with precise details of a church and a prison built into a city wall where the lady awaited her execution (a very unusual construction but both the wall and the prison are still there). Things that had disappeared (a church's clock) or appeared (the roof on a tower) were verified by local historians. It would take too long to describe all the details, but these two people are now certain that reincarnation exists. They are a small sample but extremely well documented. Subject: Two Reincarnation Cases Verified

I just saw two episodes from a pastlife documentary made by the
Austrian TV channel ATV.

Two Austrian people first underwent pastlife regression, and then
the TV crew travelled to the places with them that they had seen
during the regression.

Both found exactly what they had described in session, down to
the smallest details, plus or minus changes that had happened
during 100 (in one case) or 200 (in the other case) years of time.

One location was a blacksmith's workshop in a little village
in the far western mountains of Austria - it came complete with
images of a church, a chapel, a lake and a guesthouse that were
all verified -, the other one in a city in France that came
with precise details of a church and a prison built into a
city wall where the lady awaited her execution (a very unusual
construction but both the wall and the prison are still there).

Things that had disappeared (a church's clock) or appeared
(the roof on a tower) were verified by local historians.

It would take too long to describe all the details, but these two
people are now certain that reincarnation exists. They are a
small sample but extremely well documented.

The Church-a short story set in the near future
